L.A. Witt And Aleksandr Voinov “Unhinge the Universe”

Love is the only force capable of transforming an enemy into friend. – Martin Luther King, Jr.

Love sometimes comes when we least expect it. Two men who are meant to be mortal enemies are thrown together under the most heinous circumstances, only to find themselves clinging to each other for survival.

WWII, 1944 France. Hagan Friedrichs, a SS German Lt. is trying to find his brother after a mission he’s on goes terribly wrong. He finds himself captured and interrogated by an American Captain named John Nicholls. What happens when the uniform comes off? And there they are, just two men, scared and tired of war.

I loved how the authors humanized these characters. When all is said and done, they are just two men swept up into a war through no fault of their own. They are human beings no matter what uniform they’re wearing. There’s an understanding of compassion between these two men that neither if them is willing to admit. They are both grieving for people they recently lost, Hagan his older brother and John, his lover.

The flow of the story keeps everything moving at a steady pace. There’s no down time. From the tense and sometimes nail biting scenes to the sweet, loving scenes. The shaving scene for me is intense and beautiful all at the same time. It showed that underlying fear and uncertainty that Hagan still has for his captor, and it showed the caring and kindness from John.

I really enjoyed this story all the way through. It was unpredictable, not knowing what was around the corner. The wondering if or when are they going to get caught! It keeps you on your toes the whole time. I found myself wanting these two men who, in reality shouldn’t even be together, to beat the odds and find their happiness. I was rooting for them the whole time.

Even though this story takes place during WWII, the actual fighting isn’t a big part of this story. I highly recommend this for everyone. You won’t be disappointed, I promise.
