“Training Cats” Is Easy With The Right Bait

Happiness. It was the place where passion, with all its dazzle and drumbeat, met something softer: homecoming and safety and pure sunbeam comfort. – Laini Taylor

This was such a sweet story.

Brent is a pharmacist at a local grocery store and has a boyfriend named Tyler who isn’t a very nice person. In fact, he’s kind of a selfish, greedy jerk. He is rude to Brent’s friends, rearranges Brent’s life, and has returned every gift Brent has ever gotten him. No matter how much he wanted the original item, the exchange is always for something just a little bit better, bigger, or flashier and somehow makes Brent feel foolish. I never see what Brent saw in him.

Right away, I saw Brent was just an all around nice guy who deserved a more worthy partner than the one he had. Brent knows things aren’t going well with Tyler. He’s starting to realize his relationship with him is a mistake and something must be done. It was great to see him finally stand up and give Tyler the old heave ho, even if it means he’ll be alone.

Evan is Brent’s co-worker and is secretly crushing for him hard. He’s very sweet and always has a kind word for everyone he meets. He waits patiently for Brent to notice him, not knowing he had been Brent’s first choice until he was distracted by a flashy Tyler.

I loved seeing Brent getting on with his life after Tyler. He finally starts doing what he wants to do, putting his interests first. His first act as a single man was to get a cat. I almost squealed with delight when he invited Evan over to meet his new feline friend. Brent realizes Evan could be his second chance at finally getting it right, being happy.

For being such a short story, this one felt complete. You get the whole package. The story ends at the very beginning of their relationship but you know they’re going to make it without knowing all the day to day details. You never know when happiness is staring you right in the face.
