2013 – The Year In Reviews

Happy New Year’s Eve, everyone! The TNA crew has been busily compiling our list of the top reads of 2013, which is never easy considering we read and review hundreds of books each year, but we’ve managed to come up with a few that we felt stood out from all the rest and have put them together for you.

They are in no particular order, just the books and characters that made us think, laugh, cry, smile, or touched our hearts and minds in their own unique ways. We’ve also included a special category just for cover love, in honor of our own A.J. Corza, whom we miss terribly and look forward to returning after the first of the year.

As a special celebration of these and the many more hundreds of books that aren’t on this list because of space constraints, but very well could have been, The Novel Approach would like to give you the chance to weigh in on your own favorites.

THIS CONTEST IS NOW CLOSED

  2. How in the world did we narrow it down? There were so many great choices. Even now I’m thinking, “I should have included…” It was a very good year in M/M fiction. Looking ahead to the already scheduled releases, 2014 will be just as good. Thank you TNA crew for being the best damn reviewers around. It is an honor to work with you!

Based on StormyMonday’s favorites, I can already tell all this contest will do is add more books to my already massive TBR pile. :-P

  4. I love end of the year lists and was quite honored to be included. Yay! I’ve already taken several titles down as ‘must-reads.’ Seems like I’m always a year behind in my reading…I’ll read these books in 2014 while new stuff comes out. Hahahaha. Thanks for the recommendations.

    1. Vin and Mai were destined for my Best of the Year list, Edmond. And for as much as I read, I’m always incredibly far behind too. Too many books, too little time. Happy New Year!

    1. Oh, there was no way your boys weren’t making my list this year! <3 The only problem was having to put them in the "Historical" rather than the "Paranormal" category, but it works either way. :)

  5. I’m kind of bad at recording what I’ve read but I’ll list books that stayed with me the most for various reasons. King Mai (also for the cover) by Edmond Manning, Safeword by AJ Rose, Transgression by Theo Fenraven, Threshold and Stormhaven by Jordan L. Hawk (also favorite couple), the Hainted series by Ms. Hawk as well, partially because I didn’t want to read it at first and now I can’t wait for the next. The Mingled Destinies of Crocodiles and Men (also for the cover) by Eric Arvin. Ace by Kate Aaron, The Sky is Dead by Sue Brown, Glitterland by Alexis Hall. I could probably keep going but I’ll stop there. This is way more difficult than I would have thought. Thank you for the giveaway and Happy New Year!

  6. Have only just read Widdershins but the next two will be got in new year, for a favourite couple. Also started reading lots of Josh Lanyon – Holmes and Moriarity and got Adrian Englisg to do. Enjoyed Dani Alexanders Shattered Glass and hoping for more once he’s better. AJ Rose’s Safeword was a great follow up and loved the cover aain. and Harper Fox was added to my Brit authors must buy list!
Happy New Year to all at TNA!

  23. My favorite books of the year were Parting Shot by Mary Calmes and Whiskey and Wry by Rhys Ford. I love everything written by both authors and the Matter of Time series from Mary Calmes is one of my all-time favorite series. I can’t wait to see the next book in the Sinner’s series from Rhys Ford. I wish I could name every other author I love but there is not enough room so I just want to say thanks for writing to every author that reads this!

  24. It’s great to see all the different books people loved. Some I’ve read and agree, and the others I haven’t read have me taking notes or just happy to have them waiting to be read on my e-reader. Limiting myself to what came out in 2013, not just what I read in the year, I’m just going to throw out a few that I really loved, not just really, really, really liked, of which there are so many. Sarah Black’s The General and the Horse-Lord and The General and the Elephant Clock of Al-Jazari were just so wonderful and in a tie for favorite series with my favorite couple’s series. I loved Rhys Ford’s Sinner’s Gin. Vona Logan’s Return to Destiny was a short that just worked for me on all levels. Chris Scully’s When Adam Kissed Me just got to me, and I was so happy to discover last year’s wonderful companion story, Inseparable. Favorite couple would go to Lou Sylvre’s Luki Vasquez and Sonny James from the Vasquez & James series, and this year’s releases in the series, Finding Jackie and Saving Sonny James were more excellent chances to read about the love and adventures of these two. My favorite YA read this year was Openly Straight. Not necessarily a romance but so great that I just wanted to go out and buy copies for everyone, even knowing it wouldn’t be everyone’s favorite, too.

    Happy reading in 2014, everyone!

Some of my favorite authors that released multiple books this past year were Rhys Ford, Amy Lane, Abi Roux, SE Jakes, and Mercy Celeste. The last book that I bought and read in 2013 was Pony by SJD Peterson. Loved it and can’t wait for the next in the Guards of Folsom series!

  28. Wow, those are a lot of the stories I’ve enjoyed this last year as well. You all have great taste! I’m always shocked by how many I’ve bought when I am forced to confront how many came out in a single year. LOL! So much to read, so little cash left to purchase them.

  29. I love reading through everyone’s lists since that gives me a better idea of what to get next!

If I have to go based off of how many times I’ve re-read something, I’d have to go with Tell Me It’s Real by TJ Klune. I LOVE all of the characters, not just the main couple. I can honestly say that I’ve read it at least once a month since I’ve gotten it.

I also loved Creature Feature, with stories by Poppy Dennison and Mary Calmes. Both stories were great! If I had to choose my favorite couple, I’d go with Frank and Cael from Mary Calmes’ story, Landslide.

As for cover, I love the Parting Shot cover by Mary Calmes.

  43. Yes, I’ve read a few of those from your lists. I also loved:
Bullheaded by Catt Ford because she managed to make bulriding interesting and the ‘couple’ real both in their failure and in their success.
The Tin Box by Kim Fielding because it’s a heartbreaking story/history.
Leather + Lace by A.B. Gayle because it takes a new(er) view on BDSM.
Anything Could happen by B.G. Thomas because anything he writes makes me feel good and happy.
And many more. But this will do for now.

  44. I have a hard time remembering what was published in 2013 since the ones I really like I end up reading over and over again. I love reading everyone’s lists. Now I get to expand my TBR list!
I really liked the cover of Goblins by Melanie Tushmore. The book was great two. I love the fantasy stuff and I’ve always thought Goblins were great if written well.
Some of my favorites of the year are below:
    Superhero by Eli Easton
Old Loyalty, New Love and Parting Shot by Mary Calmes
Going Up and Racing the Sun by Amy Lane
A Little Bit Country and To the Other Side by SJ Frost
In Another Life and More Than Everything by Cardeno C.
Dance Only For Me and Backwoods Asylum by Megan Derr
The Dragon’s Hoard series by Mell Eight
I know I’m leaving a lot of authors off, but that doesn’t mean they weren’t awesome too- 2013 was a great year!

  45. The Engineered Throne by Megan Derr
Strength of the Pack by Kendall McKenna
Old Loyalty, New Love by Mary Calmes
Brac Pack Halloween by Lynn Hagen
Alpha Trine by Lexi Ander (technically was originally released in 2012, but was re-released and I re-read it. I love my sci-fi).

And the list goes on and on, but these are the first 5 off the top of my head.

Congratulations, Lee! I’ve already contacted DSP customer service, so expect to hear something soon. Happy reading! :)
