Anatomy Of A Sex Scene – A Guest Post And Giveaway By Rain Carrington

Rain Carrington is our guest today on her Honky Tonk 3: Wedding Bells and Bullets Blog Tour. She’s giving a couple of lucky readers a chance to win some e-books, so read on to see what you can win and how to enter the giveaway.

Starting a sex scene. Preparation! Coffee is key, a cigarette at the ready (yes, I smoke), working lighter, and something in the background to focus me. I prefer music or The Waltons. Yes, the old 70’s TV show. I’ve found that particular show gives me the best background for my writing, especially the sex scenes, don’t ask me why!

Sitting in front of the blank white screen is never so intimidating as when a sex scene is coming up in the story. For sure there is excitement! There is nothing like a good sex scene. However, there are also nerves. I’ve written quite a few sex scenes. In the same book there may be over a dozen so to come up with something new is like climbing a the same mountain over and over trying to see a different view each time.

As I climb I see the kissing. What is hot sex without some hot kissing to start? The kissing has to be extra passionate. Their eyes must meet. I think of the bodies of both of the men, whether there is chest hair to run fingers through or is it a smooth chest? Is one of the men long and lean, burly and brute or small and delicate? Pitting two different body types in the same scene presents its own challenges but that also makes it much more fun. Pictures help. I make full albums of my men, angles and expressions to fit most of the scenes but nothing is better than the angles they achieve in my mind.

With the pictures up on my screen and the intentions in my head I begin. If this is a first scene for the men involved I like them to be face to face. If it’s not their first encounter there are many positions to put them in and I think about them all. The written dynamic of the couple leads me a lot of the time to what positions are called for, as well as the story line. If there is angst, for example, like fighting then sometimes the best way to have them take out their aggressions is to have them up against the wall or rolling in the dirt, half fighting, half making steamy angry sex. I think that may be why my characters have the angst they do…hmm.

If there is no anger, it can be every bit as passionate. Sometimes it is the first time for one or both of my men. Then I have to consider the pain, the nerves and the fear. Maybe they are starting their exploration of BDSM. That is where hundreds of intriguing positions and equipment come in and that is where my excitement grows. I think of spanking benches and how they can be used, wooden crosses, chains, spreader bars, or maybe just simple silk scarves and how exactly my characters can use these things.

Sometimes I hit snags or blank spots so researching for this is imperative. I think any of the authors can tell you that research is not only important but one of our favorite parts. We women authors have, of course, never had a man on man sexual experience so visual aids are important. I am not above admitting that I watch porn or look for still pictures to get angle right. It’s sometimes hard to imagine what a man can do with his body unless I see it happening.

I am lucky to have a lot of gay friends as well to let me bounce ideas off of. They are always willing to give me feedback on an idea I have. One sends me dozens of pictures to help. I hate to put him to work like that but he, so generously, never complains.

Once all of these things are considered and the two (or more) men are clearly set in my mind, the location, the equipment if any and keeping with the story line, then the scene unfolds. From the first kiss to the last scream of climax I see it and my fingers try to keep up as I type it out onto the glowing white screen. It feels a bit like an orgy for me sometimes because it’s not just the men, but I’m there and so are my readers. Hundreds of people are watching and breathing heavily with these men and for it to be more than pictures on a screen I need to make sure that the smells, sounds and emotions can be felt by all of the onlookers. As I direct them in their lovemaking, I must assure that the crowd around us experiences everything my boys are experiencing.

Each of the characters need to have their own voice in it. Their own growls, grunts, screams as well as their own facial expressions and body movements. All of my characters are so real to me that this comes through almost on its own. Some have scratched the other’s back. There may be one who begs for more while others beg for it to end, the intensity too much. Breathing is so loud it drowns out the whimpers and screams at the finale are lung draining.

My thoughts run faster than my hands most of the time so that when I’m finished with the scene my page is as messy as the men are. I’m spent and my cigarette is puffed down to the filter. There are times I have to wait for my toes to uncurl. It is rare that I’m not smiling a goofy grin and there is never a time that I can’t wait to get the reactions of my readers. There is a lot of self-satisfaction after writing a good sex scene but when my readers tell me that they enjoyed them as well, my climax is complete.

The clean-up comes, then the reread. I laugh at the typos and mistakes that I made during the writing. I put in tweak here and there, then more. Like with a real BDSM scene this is the aftercare. Taking care of my lovers and making sure everyone is not only satisfied sexually but any bruised and messy bits are cleaned and cared for. Then when everything is sponged off and ointment applied it’s time for a glass of wine and a nap…

Author Bio: Rain Carrington started writing when she was just a teenager in Trinidad, Colorado but didn’t start writing M/M romance until much later. Through the years many of her gay male friends told stories of heartache and the struggle to find “the one” so she told them stories, fantasies all about them and their future cowboy, fireman, biker or policeman. When she found a writing site that encouraged her to write them down she started what was an adventure like she never had before.

Her first story, Cabin fever, about a young man searching for love and finding it wrapped in a member of a mafia family gained her readers who cheered for more. She knew then that she had found her place in the world. To make stories of love and kink that not only her readers but she could get lost in as well.

Rain now lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado but has traveled most of the US. Her last road trip to San Francisco gave her characters still coming out…no pun intended…in her newer stories. Rain has severe scoliosis which makes it hard for her to do all the things she used to love but it did give her the time to write that she never had before. She fights for lgbt rights from her home as best she can now and keeps in close contact with her friends that fight on two good legs to point them where they should go. She is a fervent believer that one door never closes without another opening so there are no limits she can’t get past.

Of all the people in the world no one has encouraged and supported her like her friends, many of them writers themselves, and her family. There is never a dull moment in her home where laughter is in the air 24/7 and everyone knows to avoid the computer screen when she sits in front of it. They never know what kind of beautiful man love they may see. Rain calls it research, they call it, “there she goes again!”

Meet Ethan…he’s a self proclaimed slut hitchhiking across country from New York on his way to San Francisco. He stops in a small town in New Mexico and gets a job at a tavern called Honky Tonk without really wanting it. The owner of the tavern is a hulking man named Hunter Westmore and Ethan does everything he can to get the man’s attention and once he does his dirtiest dreams come true.

Hunter is a cowboy and owns a ranch as well as the tavern. When he meets the city kid who came into the tavern he didn’t know what hit him. He’d never felt the way Ethan made him feel and he tried to ignore the younger man but no one could ignore Ethan. Once he finally gives in they start a discovery of what makes them both tick, and what they both love is when Hunter takes a strong hand to Ethan and gives him his collar. Can their darkly seductive love last or will their kinks tear them apart?

In this sequel to Honky Tonk Ethan and Hunter are in New York to see Ethan’s parents who had thrown him out at 15 because of his promiscuous behavior. They like Hunter and are overjoyed when Hunter asks them for Ethan’s hand in marriage but old habits die hard and Ethan comes away from his home feeling low like when he had first been told to leave. Things get worse at his old hang outs and soon all of the things Ethan had done to make himself feel like a good man are forgotten as he lets old feelings come back making him question himself and the love Hunter feels for him.

Reggie is living in New York going to school but something is missing from his life and one night when he goes with Hunter and Ethan to a BDSM club he finds out who that something is. Drew is tied and abused and he takes Reggie’s heart with one look. Drew’s Master just happens to be Ferguson Kenroy, Ethan’s old lover, and Fergi wants Ethan back. When Ethan and Reggie snatch Drew away from him Fergi takes Ethan to compensate.

Cane is living in LA and longs for a Dom who can give him the love and strong hand he craves but instead meets Seth, a hit man in a mafia family who gives him so much more. When Hunter and Ethan go to LA to hide from Fergi they all learn that no one is what they seem and love runs deeper than pain.

What will happen to the wedding of the century in Mesa Rojo when Hunter and Ethan are forced to babysit a mobster, deal with the homophobic father of the groomsman, and overcome their own cold feet? Sparks!

Hunter and Ethan are back in the third and final installment of the Honky Tonk Trilogy. In this story we revisit Westmore Ranch where Hunter is forced to have a man stay on the ranch who is a member of a west coast crime family. This man, Troy Castor, sets his sights on damaged Drew behind Reggie’s back. In steps Ethan to save the day but with heavy consequences.

The wedding is not going as planned as Reggie’s father blames Hunter for “corrupting his only son into homosexuality”. He starts rumors, causing the vendors to run for cover to avoid being in the middle of a war between the two largest cattlemen in the area. This and their own insecurities about being a man the other deserves has them both worried if they are even ready to commit for a lifetime.

When the day finally comes bullets fly. With the bullets come revelations, tears and new dreams to reach for but will Hunter and Ethan be the ones reaching for them together or will one have to set out on his own?

Please, please, please count me in :-) I have read the first two and I would recommend the series to anyone who enjoys this genre – especially if you like a good story with romance/light bdsm/angst/cowboys/bad guys/sexy scenes/need I say more. I was lucky enough to start following the story when it was a free read on the Internet and then I was happy to purchase ‘Honky Tonk’ when it was subsequently published. I am also glad to know, after reading this review, that Rain gets great pleasure from her writing and knowing that her readers do as well. I would love to know what pictures inspired her lead men Ethan & Hunter?

I love how you get ready to write…. I also have to get in the mood and sometimes it’s damned difficult. I’m intrigued about your angry sex so I have to check your your books. I haven’t read any (yet!) but you’re on my list, in case I don’t win. I love cowboys and wonder how I’ve missed yours.

I do like the thought that goes into what will actually happen during the scene. It’s key to making it work, and means it’s going to be really important to the story. Thanks for sharing your process with us!
