DividersWriting the Writer

Writing a character who is a writer should be a no-brainer, right? The problem is that every writer has a different process, and maybe Trey doesn’t write the same way I do, maybe he has different habits, maybe he has different goals. Of course, the biggest thing is that Trey writes in a genre that is totally out of my wheelhouse.

Not that I don’t like horror, because I do. It’s not my favorite genre, but certainly one that I’ve read and enjoyed (I’m a much bigger fan of horror books than I am of horror movies.)

My favorite horror writer is Stephen King. In fact he has a few reading firsts for me, regardless of genre. Pet Semetary was the first book that quite literally sent a chill down my spine. Up until I read the scene where the dead and buried cat comes slinking up the driveway I had always thought that expression was just that, an expression. Then I read that scene and wow, it actually happened.

It was also a Stephen King book that I first put down, thinking I’d never even pick it back up again let alone finish it, that I did wind up finishing. I just didn’t like the characters or where the book was going after the first couple of chapters, so I stopped reading and went to bed. Well, at two am, I was still awake because I couldn’t get the book out of my head and in the end, I turned the light back on and spent the rest of the night finishing the book. That one was Misery.

Both those experiences are part of what informs my love of words and of being a writer. I felt that way because of words written down on the page. They weren’t real, they weren’t tangible, and yet they were in my head because of the way they were put together on the page. How cool is that? Very, very cool.

For Trey, the characters in his books live in his head, they inhabit him until he writes them out and, given what he writes, some of those characters are pretty damn scary. Which makes Trey very motivated to finish the story and trap those characters in the book instead of his head.

lovematters_800Blurb for Love MattersFor ten years they’ve done things Trey’s way. Now Lucien wants more. He wants to be with his lover full-time. Is Trey ready? Will he ever be?

Ten years after they first met and fell in love, Lucien and Trey are still together—after a fashion. Terrified that he’s going to become entirely dependent on Lucien, Trey calls his lover to come spend four to five days with him whenever he finishes a novel. Lucien wants more, but up until now has been willing to bow to Trey’s wishes.

Finally broaching the idea of seeing each other more often, during Trey’s writing periods, Lucien suggests that they begin to date each other on Friday nights. Trey agrees to the experiment and begins to flourish as Lucien gets him out of the house more—to eat, to swim, to visit the beach.

But can Trey remain faithful to his work ethic, get the job done with his novels and enjoy the distractions and adventures Lucien plans for him? Or will Lucien’s desire to have more break them apart?

Author BioAbout Sean Michael: Often referred to as “Space Cowboy” and “Gangsta of Love” while still striving for the moniker of “Maurice,” Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organising his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channelling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to “Chicago”.

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He’ll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

Excerpt from Love Matters“No. No, tell me. Where did you see them?” Curious boy.

Lucien loved how Trey wanted to know about everything.

“Online. You can get a shower head that detaches and there’s all these different heads that go on in its place.” It was sexy as hell and he could imagine using them on Trey, feeding the different heads into his lover’s ass.

Lucien took Trey’s hands again and brought him into the shower.

“Really? Like cocks?” Trey’s eyes were wide, then they closed as Lucien tugged him into the spray.

“Yes. Like cocks and all sorts of plugs, things to fill you with water. Ones with one hole, with two, with a whole bunch. They were pretty neat.”

The water fell around them. “Warm enough?” Lucien asked.

“It’s perfect.” Trey held onto him with one hand. “Did you… Did you get some?” That meant Trey was intrigued.

“I didn’t. I needed to check your set up here to make sure I bought the right stuff.” But he had days now, and he could take the time to do that and to get them here before he was banished again as Trey started his next book. “They had overnight shipping.”

“Do they? That’s expensive.”

“You’re worth it, baby.” He did love how that made Trey’s cheeks go pink. “Just imagine, by the day after tomorrow we could be pushing plugs that spray water up your ass.” Okay, that had sounded sexier in his head.

“Lucien!” Trey’s eyes went wide, moving around madly.

“I’ve got you.” He wrapped his arms around Trey.

“Sorry. Sorry. I.” Trey chuckled, cheeks heated. “You say things.”
