Blurb: Never judge a sexy man by his cover.
Detective Beau Williams is hard-working, dedicated, and professional. He enjoys the finer things in life, but with his heavy caseload that includes what Beau suspects is a new serial killer, he has no time to enjoy much of anything. What the tall redhead needs is someone to shake him up a little.
Investigative Technician Austin Kent never met a snarky joke he didn’t like – or a set of stairs that couldn’t trip him up. One night after a devastating episode at work, Austin sees something else he likes – the handsome detective he’s seen around the station whom he’s always wondered about. But after he makes a drunken fool of himself in front of Detective Williams, he’s sure there’s no hope.
Beau and Austin’s worlds collide right away when Austin is sent to pick up some evidence at the station. Amidst a myriad of twists and turns in the troubling serial killer style murders of Vegas conventioneers, Austin and Beau discover that there’s more to the other than they’d originally thought. There might even be more they’d like to give – unless the killer has the final say.
Excerpt: Beau waited until they were finished. Austin promised to come back in a few days to help Rich sort through boxes of clothing donations to decide what could be used, what had to be tossed and what needed to be cleaned. There was another pull at Beau’s heart. There was some more playful joking with Rich then Austin turned to Beau.
“Thanks, man. You guys were really great. I mean it.”
“It was my pleasure.” Beau was surprised at his unexpected bout of shyness. “Are you too tired to—”
“I’m never too tired for that.” Austin had blurted it out then seemed to catch himself. “Oops. You were probably only going to ask if I was too tired to give you a ride or something.”
Beau snorted. “You could give me a ride, but it wouldn’t be in a car.”
Austin’s mouth dropped open then he quickly recovered. “Detective Williams. I’m scandalized.” He put a hand over his heart. “You not only made a dirty joke but you’ve insinuated that I’ve fallen so hard for your charms that you can have me at your whim.”
“And you would be right.”
“That wasn’t very romantic, was it?”
“No, but because you’re so fucking hot, I’ll forgive you.” Austin clapped a hand over his mouth. “Shit. It’s a good thing Rich didn’t hear me. I’m already the top contributor to the swear jar.”
“So he wasn’t kidding earlier. They’re really able to control the kid’s cursing with that?”
“Pphhh. Hardly. But Rich said I can out-curse everyone here ten times over and that I’m a bad influence.”
Beau leaned in to whisper in Austin’s ear. “You’re a bad influence on me, but in a very good way.”
“Hot damn. Let’s get outta here.”
Grinning, Beau laid his hand on Austin’s arm. “I do have to take Parker and Lonnie home first though, so I can’t get to your place for another thirty minutes or so. Is that too late?”
Parker called over right then. “Beau, Rich is driving us back to the apartment—that okay?”
Beau wondered how much of that had been spontaneous and how much had been for Beau and Austin’s benefit. As he walked over to his friends to say goodbye, Austin jogged ahead. By the time Beau had reached them, he caught the tail end of the conversation with Austin and Parker exchanging numbers.
“This is genuinely appreciated, man. I was sure we were fucked sideways.”
Rich grunted. “Pay up, Austin.”
“Aw, come on. There aren’t any kids around!”
Rich shook his head grimly. “You’re still in the building, dude. It counts.”
“Goddammit.” Austin reached into his wallet and pulled out a five.
“Ahem. And another five for the second one. Oh, and for the others earlier.” Rich held his palm up.
“You’re bleeding me dry, kid.”
“And we appreciate doing business with your potty mouth.”
