Music and Writing

Since Running With Scissors is about musicians, I figured this would be a good opportunity to talk about what music I listen to while writing. Because there is always music playing while I write. I need my tunes, yo!

The band in the book is a hard rock band, so you would think that’s what I listened to while writing it, but it was quite the opposite. I go through phases with music, and my tastes during Running With Scissors were, shall we say, varied.

Here are ten songs that came up frequently while I wrote this book:

Which kind of gives you an idea of what I listen to as a general rule. As always, a ton of 30 Seconds to Mars, which will surprise precisely no one. I listen to a ton of Bastille, am hooked on Tooji, and am impatiently waiting for more music by John Newman, Ke$ha (yes, I love her – don’t judge me), Adam Lambert, and Luke Bryan.

Next week, it’ll probably be God Module and KMFDM. Then I’ll go back on a country kick. A week later, it’ll be pop drivel as far as the eye can see—I am completely unashamed of loving Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. And toward the end of September, it’ll be 30 Seconds to Mars on full volume because I’m going to see them in concert again and OMG CANNOT WAIT.

So there you have it—my appalling taste in background music while writing books about musicians. :D
