EXCERPT:

Chapter 1

“Tanner, Mike’s on the phone for you.”

“Thanks, Miranda.” I set down the knife I was using to julienne peeled broccoli stems, wiped my hands on my apron as I walked into the tiny office off the kitchen, and then picked up the phone handset. “Hi, Mikey.”

“Hey, Tanner. Did I catch you at an okay time?”

“Yeah.” I dropped into the beat-up leather chair. “Lunch crowd is gone and the dinner rush won’t start for another couple hours yet.”

“What’s for dinner?”

“Your pop’s broccoli coleslaw. Jared McFarland had a great crop this season so he gave us a bunch.”

“Still using Pop’s recipes at the diner, huh? You know you don’t have to.” He paused and lowered his voice. “Same with his name.”

Mike’s father had opened Jesse’s Diner thirty years earlier and everyone in our small town of Hope, Arizona had loved the food almost as much as they’d loved the man. Jesse had been a father figure to half the town, myself included, and a year and a half after he died, we all still acutely felt his loss.

“This will always be Jesse’s Diner,” I said firmly. “I’m just taking care of it for him.”

“He left the diner to you, Tanner. No conditions or strings. He wanted you to run it, not turn it into a mausoleum.”

Unsure of how to respond to the reminder that Mike’s father had left his business to an employee instead of his son, I cleared my throat and wriggled uncomfortably.

“I’ve told you a million times that I have no issue with it. My pop knew I’d never move back to Hope to run the diner and my dad has more than enough money to put me through school.”

Both true statements. Shortly after high school graduation, Mike had moved to Las Vegas for college and immediately proclaimed Sin City as his forever home. His fathers weren’t surprised because Mike had always wanted to live in a big city, and frankly, they were just thankful his new home was only a three and a half hour car ride away. Plus, while the diner had brought in enough money for Jesse to get by, his partner Steve Faus had been the primary bread winner in their family.

“Don’t go silent on me, Tanner. The whole town knows you love that diner as much as my pop did and they’re glad he left it in your hands. Quit feeling guilty about it and doing everything exactly like he did. He would have wanted you to make it your own.”

“I, uh, changed the way we deliver the checks,” I admitted quietly.

After a pause, Mike asked, “The way you deliver the checks?”

“Yeah. You know how we had those black plastic trays?” I rubbed my lips together.

“Uh-huh.”

“I replaced them with old books.”

“Books?”

“Old books.” I nodded even though Mike couldn’t see me. “I picked a couple dozen of them up at Second Hand. Now we tuck the check into the book, bring it over with a pen, and encourage the customers to write a note inside. Everyone’s been having fun sharing comments and reading what other people wrote. It’ll get even better as the years pass and the pages get filled. People can see what they said when they were younger. Kids can see what their parents wrote, someday even their grandparents.”

I loved the idea of ongoing connections through generations. It was something I’d missed in my own life, that sense of being part of something. Living in Hope helped because the community was exceptionally tightknit, but I’d moved there as a teenager so I didn’t have the same ties as many others.

“That’s a…charming idea. Very Hope.”

Exactly. “Thanks.”

“What else do you have planned?”

“What do you mean?” I clenched my jaw.

“Come on, Tanner. I’ve known you since you were sixteen. You have other ideas for the place.”

Intentionally misunderstanding, I said, “Your pop was a great cook. His recipes are perfect.”

“Yes, he was.” Mike sighed wistfully. “And you make them really well. But I meant the diner itself. You can’t let all those hours you spend watching HGTV go to waste.”

“I don’t—”

“Six years, Tanner. We’ve been friends for six years.”

Which meant he knew me better than anyone. I’d met Mike in high school when I was a scrawny junior trying to get away from a couple of seniors who loved to tease and torment me, and Mike was a giant freshman who had no trouble stepping in front of them and putting a stop to the problem. I had been equal parts grateful and surprised. Grateful because nobody had ever stood up for me before then. Surprised because Mike nonchalantly told me he had two dads and anyone who had a problem with gay people would have a problem from him.

I knew I was gay before I reached my teens, and the school bullies probably picked on me because they suspected it, but nobody had ever said it out loud until that moment. And I’d reacted to Mike’s casual proclamation with the same knee-jerk, shame-fueled fear as I did to his observation that I enjoyed decorating shows.

“Fine. I like remodeling shows. So what?” I said defensively.

Admitting I watched television programs marketed toward women played into a stereotype I wasn’t quite willing to embrace and yet couldn’t escape. My mannerisms were too effeminate, my voice too soft, and my body too underdeveloped. Jesse had always said men came in all shapes and sizes and there was nothing wrong with how I looked, but that was hard to believe when I was attracted to guys with larger, hairier bodies, deeper voices, and more rugged features. For that matter, so was Jesse if his partner was any indication. I had nearly swallowed my tongue the first time I’d seen six foot, five inch, two hundred twenty pound former college football player Steve Faus, and six years later, my reaction to the older man was only slightly less humiliating. Thankfully, Steve either didn’t notice my obsession with him or he was too polite to mention it.

“So nothing,” Mike said. “Watch whatever TV shows you like, man. I’m just pointing out that the diner walls probably haven’t been painted in thirty years and the booths are just as old. Don’t pretend you’re fine with the duct tape holding the tears in the vinyl together. You keep that tiny guesthouse you rent from the sheriff shiny enough to do surgery on the floor so I know you’re itching to update the diner and I say go for it.”

I squirmed again, this time because he was right—I wanted to fix those problems and more. “I might freshen a few things up. We’ll see how the money pans out at the end of the year.” And if I had the nerve to push aside Jesse’s memory and truly take his place. “Anyway, I doubt you called me to talk decorating tips. What’s up?”

“My dick,” Mike said and then immediately snorted and giggled.

“That joke wasn’t funny when you were fourteen, and it’s gotten progressively less funny over the years,” I said dryly.

“I think it’s hilarious.”

“That makes one of us.”

“Whatever, dude. You’re too uptight. You need to get laid.”

“I can’t believe girls are actually willing to go out with you when you talk like that.”

“I’m hot.” He lowered his voice and suggestively said, “Besides, I do other things with my mouth they really enjoy. Like Naomi, this girl I’m seeing now, she goes wild when I—”

“Don’t tell me about your sex life, Mikey. I don’t want to know.” It was the truth. Mike was the closest thing I had to a brother, so I’d never had so much as an ounce of attraction to him. Or maybe that was because I’d used up all my attraction tickets on my unhealthy obsession with his dad.

“Hey, man, I’m doing you a favor. Hearing about my action is as close as you are to getting any.”

“For all you know, I’m getting plenty of action but I’m too much of a gentleman to talk about it.” Lies. My sex life was embarrassingly non-existent and my personal life was just as lonely.

Mike scoffed disbelievingly.

I didn’t bother to push the point because, frankly, there was no way he’d buy it. “What do you want, Mikey?”

“I need you to do me a favor and check in on my dad.”

“Your dad?” I squeaked. Lovely. Now Mike would either think I was going through a second puberty or notice my inappropriate reaction to the mention of his dad. Hoping he hadn’t been paying close attention, I cleared my throat and spoke again. “What’s, uh, going on with your dad?”

“The vice president of his company called me. She said he isn’t himself and they’re making him take time off.”

Jesse’s death had come as a shock to all of us—pancreatic cancer that hadn’t been detected until Jesse lay in the hospital unconscious. Two days later, he was dead at the age of sixty-seven.

“He’s mourning the death of his partner. Of course he isn’t his old self,” I said defensively. “And by the way, calling someone’s kid to talk about his job issues is completely unprofessional.”

“My dad’s worked for that company forever and they’re worried about him. His boss and I get along. She didn’t have anyone else to call.”

When Mike still lived in town, I hadn’t known Steve as well as I’d known Jesse. Some of that was because of how frequently he traveled for work—the man was an unrepentant workaholic. But I’d also limited our interactions because I’d been uncomfortable with my reaction to him. After all, it takes a special kind of pathetic sleaze to not only lust after a friend’s father, but also the partner of a man who had taken me under his wing. But now that Mike had moved away and Jesse had died, Steve lived alone, so when he wasn’t traveling, he stopped by the diner for dinner and I always made sure to say hi to him and chat for a little while. That meant I now knew Steve well enough to realize how much he enjoyed his work.

“If they’re so worried, they should talk to him, not you. And your dad loves his job! Why would they take that from him when he already lost…” I didn’t need to finish that sentence because Mike knew exactly what his dad had lost. The whole town mourned Jesse’s passing but only Steve had shared his home and his bed for decades. I couldn’t begin to imagine his pain.

“Arguing with me won’t change anything, Tanner. I’m not his boss.”

Realizing my reaction was over the top, I drew in a deep breath and said, “Sorry.”

“It’s okay, but a company doesn’t bench its star sales guy and lose tons of money unless something’s wrong. I have classes and tests, but I’ll drive down there if you can’t help my dad.”

“Of course I’ll help him,” I snapped. After everything Jesse and Mike had done for me, I’d never turn my back on their family. Even if this particular family member had fueled countless inappropriate fantasies and guilt-inducing dreams.

“Cool. Call me after you see him and let me know what’s up. If he needs me, I’m there.”

Seeing Steve Faus meant I’d be up. That much was certain. I mentally smacked myself for using Mike’s bad humor. “I have to go, Mikey.”

“Later, Tanner.”

***

After getting through the bulk of the dinner rush, I filled takeout containers with the daily special, broccoli coleslaw, and a wedge of chocolate cake, and left the diner in Miranda’s and Joe’s capable hands. Founded in the late 1800s, Hope was a mix of new and old construction sprinkled in an area just under eight square miles in size and, as always, I enjoyed strolling through town. I used the quiet time to remind myself that I was doing my friend a favor by helping my mentor’s partner; I was not going to ogle a hot guy.

Unfortunately, the half-mile walk from Main Street to Steve’s mint green Victorian didn’t take long enough to accomplish what six years of the same internal lecture had failed to do. So with a resigned sigh, I adjusted my dick in a way I hoped would hide my inevitable arousal, held the bag of food in front of myself for the same reason, and rang the bell.

The house was two levels, each a decent size, so I patiently waited for Steve to answer the door, but as the minutes ticked by, I began to wonder if Mike was wrong about his father being on a break from work. I walked across the wraparound porch and peeked into the windows, not quite sure what I was looking for, but unwilling to abandon Steve if he needed help. Everything looked the same as it had when I’d last been there, which was before Jesse’s death. No lights were on, no shoes or jacket left out, nothing to indicate someone was home.

I stepped off the porch, walked backward across the lawn, and peered at the upstairs windows. The drawn curtains prevented me from seeing much, but the master bedroom light was on and I caught a flash of a silhouette through the glass. If Steve was home, why wasn’t he answering the door? A pang of worry hit me. Maybe Mike was right to be concerned. With a deep breath, I squared my shoulders and marched back up the porch steps.

“Steve,” I said in a volume I hoped could be heard through the wood door but not by the neighbors. “It’s Tanner Sellers.” I rang the bell and knocked. “I brought dinner.” After waiting for a full minute, I knocked again. “Steve, I know you’re there. Can you open the door?” I swallowed thickly. “Please?”

A few beats later, the lock clicked and the door swung open, revealing a disheveled, but still gorgeous, Steve Faus. “Hi, Tanner.” He sighed and dragged his fingers through his thick, black, and currently unruly hair. “Sorry. I was on a work call. What’s going on?”

A string of thoughts raced through my mind.

How do you always manage to look so damn hot?

I know you’re not working right now, so you couldn’t have been on a call for work.

Do you bite your lips or are they naturally full like that?

What happened at work?

Can I bite your lips?

Are you wearing underwear under those sweats?

Mike’s worried about you.

Please don’t be wearing underwear.

Thankfully, I had years of experience curbing my brain-to-mouth reflex when it came to Mike’s dad so instead of any of those things, I said, “I brought dinner,” and pushed the bag forward.

“Dinner?”

“Lasagna.” I bobbed my head. “It was today’s special. Broccoli coleslaw too.”

“Thanks, but I have a ton of work so—”

Not wanting him to brush me off, I said, “And chocolate cake. You love chocolate cake.” Which I knew because it had been served at Mike’s fifteenth birthday party, and when Steve had taken a bite, closed his eyes in bliss, and moaned, I had nearly ejaculated in my pants.

“Chocolate cake?” Steve flicked his gaze to the bag.

“Uh-huh. Just made it this morning so it’s still fresh.” I glanced down to make sure the bag still blocked my groin, the memory of those moans and that expression still affecting me five years later. “Do you have milk? I forgot to pack some but I can run over to Smitty’s and—”

“You don’t need to go to the store. My fridge may be bare, but I keep the essentials on hand.” Steve reached for the bag and then stepped to the side to make room for me to enter. “That pretty much consists of salt and vinegar chips, coffee, and because I can’t drink my coffee black, milk.”

I blinked, my surprise over that statement eclipsing my concern about having a noticeable hard-on. “That can’t be enough for a guy your size.” I cringed at my own comment, bit my lip, and hoped the heat in my cheeks wasn’t visible. “It’s a, uh, good thing I brought you dinner.”

“That was nice of you.” Steve put his hand on my back, urged me forward, and then closed the door.

The touch was simple, casual, fleeting, but it still set me on fire. Being around Steve without Jesse, Mike, or a diner full of people as a buffer gave me nowhere to escape. I closed my eyes and breathed in deeply, willing myself to calm down. So what if Steve Faus tripped every single one of my buttons? I was twenty-two, not sixteen, and a hot guy shouldn’t scramble my brain into oblivion. Not even a guy with a tall, muscular body, thick black hair, piercing blue eyes, and a deep soothing voice.

Oh, who was I kidding? I was sunk.

“Do you want to eat in the kitchen or the dining room?” Steve asked.

Bedroom, I thought. God, I was incorrigible. “Either one’s fine by me. Wherever you’re most comfortable.”

“I’ve been working so much lately that I’m almost never here, but when I am, I tend to eat on the couch or over the kitchen sink.” Steve smiled softly, his expression at once self-deprecating and endearing. “It’d be nice to sit down for a real dinner.”

My heart ached. “Dining room it is then.”

“Thanks, Tanner.”

I nodded, my throat too thick to speak. Resisting Steve was a challenge in any setting, but seeing the normally strong man vulnerable without reaching out to touch him was unbearable.

“I’ll get the plates.”

“Okay,” I croaked. I swallowed hard and walked into the dining room as Steve went to the kitchen.

Closing my eyes, I took deep breaths to calm down. I could do this. I could be Steve’s friend. We’d both lost someone important to us when Jesse passed and we both missed Mike since he’d moved away. There was no reason we couldn’t be there for each other. I was an adult now, a business owner. I was mature and responsible and perfectly able to keep my libido in check.

“Is everything okay?” Steve’s deep rich voice was tinged with worry.

I opened my eyes, ignored my uncooperative libido, and forced a smile onto my face. “Yes, fine. Sorry. I was, uh…”

“Daydreaming?” Steve grinned. “You’ve always done that.”

“I have?” I blinked in surprise.

“Uh-huh.” Steve nodded and set the plates and silverware on the table. “I remember when Mike first brought you around, you used to get this far away look on your face all the time, and when you saw us notice, you’d get embarrassed and blush.”

My cheeks heated. I knew exactly what Steve was describing and they weren’t daydreams. Well, maybe they were, but they were very specific daydreams, the kind people categorized as fantasies, and they were always about Steve.

Needing a change of topic, I said, “Do you want me to dish the food out?”

“Sure. I’ll get placemats.” Steve stepped over to the antique buffet. “Too fancy?” he asked, holding up placemats and cloth napkins.

“No, that’s nice. I can’t remember the last time I used a real napkin.” I opened the bags of food and dished portions onto each of the plates. “It was probably Christmas dinner when my grandmother was still alive.” Which was over three years earlier.

“Same here.” Steve put the placemats down across from each other on the long wood table and then ran his hands over them, making sure they were straight. “Jesse had so many people over for the holidays that we used paper plates and plastic forks. I bought these placemats at least five years ago, but I don’t think we ever used them.”

“I remember those dinners.” I had been one of the many guests at their Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter meals. “Jesse was good about giving us strays somewhere to be.”

“He was.” Steve sighed sadly. “I’ll go get drinks. I have coffee, milk, water, and beer. Pick your poison.”

On the one hand, beer usually helped me relax. On the other hand, I barely held myself in check sober, so combining alcohol and Steve was probably a recipe for disaster.

“I’m good with water.”

Quickly dipping his chin in acknowledgement, Steve left the room. When he returned a couple of minutes later, he had a glass of water in each hand and a Heineken tucked under his arm.

“It won’t bother you if I have a beer with dinner, right?” he asked as he set my water glass down.

He was leaning over my shoulder, his body heat warming my back and his breath ghosting across my cheek. If we had been naked, the scene would have been straight out of my fantasies.

“Not a bother,” I rasped. I bit my lip and held my breath, waiting for Steve to move to his side of the table. Looking at the square-jawed face and crystal blue eyes all night without leaping across the table would be an exercise in restraint, but if I had to inhale Steve’s scent and stay close enough to touch him, I’d pass out from sheer desire.

“The food smells great.” Steve straightened and inhaled deeply. “Did you hear that growl?” He patted his stomach as he walked to his chair. “I must be hungrier than I realized.”

“No, uh, I didn’t hear.” The sound of my heart pounding in my ears had drowned out everything else. “But I brought plenty of food.”

“Thanks.” Steve sat down, picked up his silverware, and arched his eyebrows. “You’re eating too, right?”

I glanced down at my plate and then picked up my fork. “Yes.”

“Good.” He ate a bite of coleslaw and then raised his beer bottle to his mouth. “When I’m traveling, I either eat alone in my hotel room or with a bunch of clients so I’m on all night. One of the things I liked best about being home was having a quiet dinner and just talking. But now…” He loudly breathed out, shook his head, and then took another bite. “Thanks for coming tonight, Tanner. This was just what I needed.”

Right then and there, I made a silent promise to bring Steve dinner the following night. And the night after that. And the night after that too. I couldn’t do much to make up for what he had lost, but a hot meal and company I could provide. And I’d find a way to keep my leering and drooling to a bare minimum.

Blurb: Not even his mother’s funeral can convince self-proclaimed party boy Zach Johnson to tone down his snark or think about settling down. He is who he is, and he refuses to change for anyone. When straight-laced, compassionate Aaron Paulson claims he’s falling for him, Zach is certain Aaron sees him as another project, one more lost soul for the idealistic Aaron to save. But Patience is one of Aaron’s many virtues. He has waited years for a man who can share his heart and complete his life, and he insists Zach is the one. Pride, fear, and old hurts wither in the wake of Aaron’s adoring loyalty, and as Zach reevaluates his perceptions of love and family, he finds himself tempted to believe in the impossible: a happily ever after.ch doesn’t need to be fixed, and he refuses to be with someone who sees him as broken.

Review: What a great love story! Cardeno C. just does it for me.  Each of the books in this collection are unique yet tell a story about coming together to form a more perfect union.  Roll your eyes, I get it.  But what is a perfect union? My definition is two or more people who come together and protect each other, love each other through sickness and in health, happiness and sadness, and trust each other no matter what comes their way. And there is pleasure in knowing that in any book I read by this author, I will get my happily-ever-after.  There’s comfort in that.

He Completes Me gives us just what Cardeno C. promises: a love story with a happy ending.  Zach is quite a character, showing up at his mother’s funeral in a skin-tight pink tank top and white pants, trying to tell the relatives he just doesn’t give a damn what they think. But what we learn about Zack as the story unfolds is that he does give a damn and uses anonymous sex, clothes, and a snarky attitude as armor to protect himself from being hurt yet again.

Aaron Paulson is Zach’s complete opposite. Or so it seems. His defense is to take care of people at the expense of himself. Zach points out many times that Aaron is taken advantage of way too often, especially by Zach own brother, Dean, and sister in law, Kimberly. Aaron is also blessed with patience, and to get Zach to admit his love for Aaron, it takes a lot of patience. It also takes a lot of trust on Aaron’s part to wait for Zach to come to his senses (that’s my opinion).

The audiobook is fantastic. The narrator, Alexander Collins, just has the sexiest voice. It sounds like smooth butter and sweet cream, and he does a great job of capturing the personalities of both Aaron and Zach. The added surprise for me was the additional chapter that was added on the end. Thank you, Cardeno C. and Alexander Collins. You make this reader/listener a very happy person.

Review: WOW! Audiobooks have come a long way.

I started listening to audios about two years ago, as a way to listen to a book in the car, but the narrators then just read the books with very little expression.  Sometimes the narrator’s voice fit the characters, but not that often.

Charlie David’s gift to Until Forever Comes is his uncanny ability to develop and portray all the human and non-human personalities. The sinister aspects of Miguel Rodriguez’s voice, and the naïve outlook that guides Ethan to Miguel with no fear, is so spot on.

Charlie David has an amazing talent, and this audiobook is a topnotch production. Combine that with the writing of Cardeno C., and you just can’t miss Until Forever Comes.

Or, at least you shouldn’t.

Excerpt: This one isn’t a picture, but it’s still going in the album. I’m not usually one to fixate on dates or times. I’ve been late to enough parties and meetings and missed enough flights to prove that fact. But there are a few things, a few dates, I’ll never forget. The very first one was Scott’s prom night. Well, technically, it was the next day, because midnight had passed.

When the year ended, I tore the page out of my calendar and I’ve kept it ever since, folded into a tiny square and stuffed into a pocket in my wallet. It traveled with me as I moved from apartment to apartment, from city to city; it kept me company in cars, subways, trains, airplanes, hell, even on a cruise ship. It’s all creased and worn, but I still have it—the piece of paper marking the date of my first kiss. Our first kiss.

I’ve gotten more skilled at using my lips and tongue since then—we both have. But that first kiss… There’s never been anything else quite like it.

Police captain Asher Penaz’s staunch professionalism bleeds into his home life, down to his neatly pressed attire and spartan apartment. He enjoys being in charge and in control, so his sudden and powerful attraction to the lighthearted, free-spirited Daniel Tover throws him for a loop. In his entire life, Daniel has never gotten what he needs, so he moves to the next place, the next job, the next attempt to find something worth staying for, always landing at the top of his game, but never feeling like he belongs.

The chemistry between Asher and Daniel sizzles, but with all that fire comes the risk of getting burned. As both men struggle to learn themselves while getting to know each other, the lines of desire and control blur. If Daniel and Asher can walk through the flames together, they might find what they desperately need.

Excerpt: Asher actually thought that would suck. He knew firsthand from what he saw at work every day that the future often held devastating news for people. And as far as reading minds, the world was full of jackasses. No reason to want to get into those heads. Besides, if Daniel could read minds, he’d know Asher wanted nothing more than to get Daniel naked and…

“So am I bent over something or on my knees?” Daniel asked, his eyes sparkling and a happy smile taking over that cute-as-hell face.

“What?” Asher asked, dumbfounded.

“In that fantasy sequence you’ve got playing in your head right now, am I bent over some piece of furniture or am I on my knees?”

Asher swallowed hard and shook his head. “Neither, actually.”

“Oh.” Daniel’s cheeks reddened and he gestured his chin toward Asher’s packed crotch and the obvious erection trailing down his left thigh. “I just thought since you were turned on that maybe…”

“You were on your back. I was lying on top of you. And we were, um, kissing.”

Big brown eyes met his.

Excerpt: Either the ground was shaking or he was. This couldn’t be real. Things like this didn’t happen to Spencer Derdinger: Great-looking men acting like he was some sort of catch. Hard-ons that wouldn’t quit. Free remodeling advice.

“A chance at what?” he asked, needing to understand what he was being asked, needing to know what was going on.

“A chance at you, baby.”

“I don’t know what that means. How old are you? I’m thirty-eight; that has to be older than you. Why do you keep calling me baby?”

Emilio stepped back and dragged his gaze from Spencer’s head to his feet and back again. Then he dipped down and whispered into Spencer’s ear. “I’m twenty-two. From the first day I saw you outside of your building, I’ve wanted you. Being older don’t matter. If anything, it’s a good thing. I think you’re hot as hell. All I need is a chance to show you how it can be between us.”

“I have no idea what that means,” Spencer whispered.

“It means that you’re my baby and I aim to prove it to you. If that word bothers you, I’ll use another one,” Emilio said. “But it won’t change nothing.” He leaned back and looked directly at Spencer as he let go of his hand and cupped Spencer’s bulge, squeezing and caressing him from balls to dick. “That clear enough?”

The benefit of divorce is having as much random sex as he wants, and it’s a benefit Jason is exploiting when he meets a sweet, shy man at a bar and convinces him to go home for a no-strings-attached night of fun.

Eight years living in Las Vegas hasn’t dimmed Abe Green’s optimism, earnestness, or desire to find the one. When a sexy man with lonely eyes propositions him, Abe decides to give himself a birthday present—one night of spontaneous fun with no thoughts of the future. But one night turns into two and then three, and Abe realizes his heart is involved.

For the first time, Abe feels safe enough with someone he respects and adores to let go of his inhibitions in the bedroom. If Jason can get past his own inhibitions and open his heart and his life to Abe, he might finally find the family he craves.

Excerpt: “Jason,” Abe moaned. He swallowed thickly and tried to slow his suddenly rapid breathing. “Hi.”

“I thought that was you.” Jason slowly moved his palm down Abe’s arm. “You remember me too, huh?”

“I, uh, have a decent memory and you made a pretty good impression.”

“Pretty good?”

Feeling his cheeks heat, Abe ducked his head and ignored the question. “How’ve you been?”

“Fine.” Jason kept slowly moving his palm until he reached Abe’s hand, and then he curled his fingers around Abe’s. “Better now. Let’s get out of here.”

The feeling of Jason’s hot skin, the sound of his husky voice, and the sight of his broad body had Abe’s senses reeling. He remembered how good it felt to be touched by this man. He had never come so hard or had it last so long. Of course, he had never been tossed aside so quickly, either. He harbored no ill will toward Jason because he’d known going in how the night would end, but that didn’t mean he wanted a repeat of waking up alone the morning after.

“I don’t do that,” Abe said.

“As I recall, you do it really, really well.”

Quiet, unassuming Tanner Sellers spends his time running a diner in Hope, Arizona. Not particularly social, twenty-two-year-old Tanner keeps to himself and enjoys his simple life, but he longs for someone to call his own. In his most secret fantasy, that someone is sexy Steve Faus. But Steve is his friend’s father and mentor’s widower and therefore off-limits.

Despite some challenges, thirty-nine-year-old Steve Faus has had a good life. He’s extremely successful at work, has a great relationship with his college-age son, and lives in a wonderful town. Eighteen months after losing his partner, the one thing Steve lacks is someone to share his life. If Steve is honest with himself, that someone is the young man he has known and cared about for years. Steve and Tanner want one another, all they need is a little push in the right direction to make both their dreams come true.

Review: I’ve loved everything I’ve read by this author and Jesse’s Diner was no exception. What a great story.

After reading the blurb I wasn’t too sure I wanted to read this. With the age difference and the love interest being the main character’s best friend’s dad, I didn’t think it would be something that interested me. I found myself coming back to it, rereading the blurb. Because I’ve loved reading this author in the past, I decided what the hell. I’m so happy I did.

What I loved most about this story was its simplicity. Right to the point, no angst, no miscommunication. Just two people finding love and companionship for all the right reasons. I thought I would have a problem with the age difference between the characters, but the author did such a great job with making them equals that age was never an issue.

Being in Tanner’s head throughout the entire story was a real treat. His humor, insecurities and overall amazement about actually being in a relationship with Steve was hilarious, especially when they are intimate for the first time. Tanner’s inner ramblings will stay with me for a long time. Too funny! And since there was so much dialogue between the two characters, I never felt as though I was missing the other person’s perspective.

Along with the lightness and humor, there were some somber moments. Steve’s late partner, Jesse, is part of the story even though he’s not there physically. We get a little insight into their relationship and see how Tanner first came into their lives. We’re also thrown for a loop, at least I was, with Steve’s big reveal. I’m not one to give away spoilers, so I won’t start now, but I thought the subject was handled amazingly well. I liked how the author touched on the issue a little bit then moved on. To me, it felt like a very realistic scenario in today’s world.

As I’m reading this story and loving everything about it, there’s a huge announcement at the end that made my heart melt. It made me love this story even more. Again, no spoilers. You’ll just have to read it yourself and find out. I can promise you, you won’t be disappointed.

Blurb: When Eli Block steps into his parents’ living room and sees his childhood crush sitting on the couch, he starts a shameless campaign to seduce the young rabbi. Unfortunately, Seth Cohen barely remembers Eli and he resolutely shuts down all his advances. As a tenuous and then binding friendship forms between the two men, Eli must find a way to move past his unrequited love while still keeping his best friend in his life. Not an easy feat when the same person occupies both roles.

Professional, proper Seth is shocked by Eli’s brashness, overt sexuality, and easy defiance of societal norms. But he’s also drawn to the happy, funny, light-filled man. As their friendship deepens over the years, Seth watches Eli mature into a man he admires and respects. When Seth finds himself longing for what Eli had so easily offered, he has to decide whether he’s willing to veer from his safe life-plan to build a future with Eli.

Dividers

Review:  Once again, this is a true romance. Cardeno C. is a master at these slow burning romances that develop through friendship and later into love. Walk With Me is no exception.

Seth is starting work with Eli’s father as a Rabbi. The book starts here with Seth visiting the Block family. When Eli runs down the stairs and stops short, staring at Seth, this story begins. My God, I think perhaps Eli Block is at the top of my list of favorite M/M characters, this young man’s enthusiasm, joy, and certainty in his behavior.

And I love how Cardeno C. wove so many wonderful side characters into this story, but the major side characters were the weddings that Seth performed. One more hysterical than the next, I swear I was cackling in the car as I listened. There was only one thing that made me frustrated about this story—I feel like Seth’s years of denial and non-communication to Eli made Eli doubt himself and his feelings and confidence. That really hurt me. When they finally got together, I hated how tentative and afraid Eli was. This was quickly overcome and made better, but I just hated to see Eli hurt.

Narration: Alexander Collins was a new narrator for me, and he had me cracking up. He brought this well-written story to life. This was simply one of the best performances from a narrator that I have listened to; however, through the entire story I kept saying to myself, “This guy sounds EXACTLY like another narrator.” I will not list who he is, as I don’t want to take away from Mr. Collins performance, but it did distract me from the book a little.

Blurb: Hollywood royalty Jeremy Jameson has lived a sheltered life with music as his sole focus and only friend. Dividers

Review:  Oh, Cardeno C., this love story is simply perfection. This book is proof that fluffy happy stories are viable, and, if well done, can rock your world.

Reg is my ideal man. Big and manly but patient and warm. So warm, indeed, that Jeremy is drawn to him from the moment he wanders into a dive of a bar for some relief from his life as a famous rock star. After a drunken offer of company, these two lost souls start a journey of friendship and love that is magnificently built. There is no doubt that this story is anything but a love story—no false plots, no thrown in controversies.

JJ is definitely a bit of a spoiled brat who is used to getting his way. I do believe beneath that persona, he is just a lonely little boy whose mother is my version of a monster. At no point did I feel that this was too long or drawn out. I wanted the story to go on forever. The relationship was slow building, and the anticipation was killing me! The first sex scene was absolutely intoxicated, and the rest were just to die for.

Narration: Perfect Imperfections was my introduction to Charlie David, and it was an absolute pleasure meeting him as a narrator. He was entertaining and read the sex scenes incredibly well. He was definitive in his voice, and I was not once confused. Altogether, with Cardeno C. and Charlie David, this audiobook is a definite success.

Blurb: Can the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

As the sole offspring of the Democratic United States president and his political operative wife, Trevor Moga was raised in an environment driven by the election cycle. During childhood, he fantasized about living in a made-for-television family, and as an adult, he rejected all things politics and built a highly successful career as far from his parents as possible.

Newly elected congressman Ford Hollingsworth is Republican royalty. The grandson of a revered governor and son of a respected senator, he was bred to value faith, family, and the goal of seeing a Hollingsworth in the White House.

When Trevor and Ford meet, sparks fly and a strong friendship is formed. But can the billionaire son of a Democratic president build a family with the congressman son of a Republican senator? Forget politics, love makes strange bedfellows.

Review: I am starting to place Cardeno C. on my auto-buy list, as I have not met a book by this author that I haven’t loved. What I think Cardeno C. is so amazing at is exceptional character development, and developing such a natural flow to the story—within and outside of the romance aspect. I really wasn’t excited to read a book about politics. Especially with the climate as of late. All I can say is, make sure you don’t let that stop you. Cardeno C. had me in love with Trevor from the start. I am typically not a fan of an introductory sex scene, but it worked in this case. I loved the dynamic of Trevor’s family life.

In stark contrast, I just wanted to shake, hug, love, and forgive Ford for who he is. Ford has amazing character, and truly wouldn’t make it in today’s climate of politics, as he is honorable. His family made me mad, but ultimately, the love between these two characters was the star. Wonderfully developed, I cannot recommend this book any more.

Narration: Ron Herczig was a new-to-me narrator. He did a good job with the story, and I really like him—with one exception—his cadence is entirely too slow. I mean, it is actually frustrating. If he spoke about two paces faster, I would have fallen all over him; however, the slow narration did lend itself well to the sex scenes. I wouldn’t look at an audio and see his name and say, “I MUST have that.” But he was sufficient.

Wake Me Up InsideWake Me Up Inside

A powerful Alpha wolf shifter and a strong-willed human overcome traditions ingrained over generations and uncover long-buried secrets to fulfill their destiny as true mates.

Regarded as the strongest wolf shifter in generations, Alpha Zev Hassick is surprised and confused by his attraction to his best friend. His very human, very male best friend. A male shifter has to mate with a female shifter to keep his humanity, so shifters can’t be gay. Yet, everything inside Zev tells him Jonah is his true mate.

Maintaining a relationship with the man he has loved since childhood isn’t easy for Jonah Marvel, but he won’t let distance or Zev’s odd family get in their way. When unexplained ailments begin to plague Jonah, he needs to save his own life and sanity in order to have a future with Zev.

Zev and Jonah know they’re destined for each other, but they must overcome traditions ingrained over generations and long-buried secrets to fulfill their destiny.

Excerpt: Jonah rolled on top of him and straightened his arms, raising himself above Zev in a push-up position and looking down into Zev’s impossibly handsome face. “Think you might like feeling it too? ’Cause I wanna get my turn.” The hardness that suddenly poked into his hip answered Jonah’s question. “I’ll take that as a yes, Hassick.”

“Oh, it’s definitely a yes, Blondie. Show me what you got,” Zev responded with a smirk and raised his eyebrows up and down comically.

Jonah chuckled. “Quit making me laugh, Zev. You’re spoiling the romance. And I went through great efforts to seduce you here. I put away the dirty socks, threw out the pizza boxes, and I even changed the sheets on this bed.”

“Oh, wow. How could I possibly resist when you bring out the big guns of seduction like that? Nothing turns me on like basic housekeeping.”

A grumble was Jonah’s only response, and then he started kissing and licking his way down Zev’s neck, taking breaks to suck on sensitive spots. When he got to Zev’s nipple, Jonah traced it with his tongue before taking it into his mouth and sucking until it hardened. Zev shuddered and moaned beneath him.

“Not such a big talker now, are you, Hassick?” Jonah asked as he switched his attentions to the other nipple and ran his fingers over Zev’s hard cock and down to his heavy balls. “Turns out I know the Kryptonite to curb your super-sarcasm power.”

“Uh-huh. Less talking more licking, Blondie,” gasped Zev.

“Pushy asshole,” Jonah replied, but there was no animosity behind the words, just affectionate amusement.

By the time Jonah had made his way down to Zev’s cock, both men were done talking, done thinking, and operating on pure instinct. A few strokes of Zev’s erection had Jonah moaning, and the first swipe of his tongue across the glistening glans took Jonah’s breath away. Before he knew it, his lips were stretched around a hard cock. He felt a tender caress over his forehead and warm fingers pushing his hair back. He looked up to see Zev watching him.

Jonah didn’t move his mouth, just darted his tongue out and licked the salty skin. Zev’s fingers made their way through his hair to the back of his neck, where they massaged and nudged Jonah downward. He whimpered in agreement and sucked more of that hard cock into his mouth. He loved feeling Zev’s need, loved it when the other man gave into it and asked for what he wanted, loved that what Zev wanted was him.

He cupped Zev’s balls, squeezing and rolling them as he enjoyed their weight and texture. Without stopping that caress, Jonah popped his mouth off Zev’s dick, licked his lips, then gathered saliva in his mouth and plunged back down, letting the wetness seep out and over Zev, easing Jonah’s descent. His free hand went to the base of Zev’s dick and met his mouth on its downward approach.

Both of Zev’s hands touched Jonah, petting his cheeks and combing through his hair. “Feels so good, Jonah. Never thought anything could feel so good.”

Zev’s breathless voice praising him added another layer to the sensual maelstrom Jonah was experiencing. He rocked his hips against Zev’s leg, wanting to feel the friction against his own need.

“Mmm, hmm. Mmm, hmm.” Jonah moaned as he increased the speed of his up and down motions and tightened his mouth even further around Zev’s cock.

He pushed his hips harder against Zev’s leg, pumped faster, and it wasn’t long before Jonah was wailing around Zev’s dick as he released his seed onto Zev’s skin and the mattress. Zev’s answering howl came just as his large body shuddered, his thick fingers tightened in Jonah’s hair, and his hard cock exploded in Jonah’s mouth.

After he finished swallowing his friend’s offering, Jonah rested his cheek against Zev’s thigh and tried to catch his breath.

“So.” Zev’s husky voice broke the silence once their gasps died down. “What do you think? Did you enjoy your turn?”

Jonah rubbed his hand up and down Zev’s leg, kissed the man’s softening dick, and then crawled back up his muscular body.

“I think that’s definitely a keeper. Let’s add it to the rotation.”

Zev laughed, wrapped his arms around Jonah, and held him tightly.

“Whatever you say, Blondie. After all, you are the brains of this operation. Or at least that’s what you keep telling me.”

Until Forever ComesUntil Forever Comes

A sensitive wolf shifter and a vicious vampire challenge history, greed, and the very fabric of their beings in order to stay together until forever comes.

Plagued by pain and weakness all his life, Ethan Abbatt is a wolf shifter who can’t shift. Hoping to find an honorable death by joining his pack mates in a vampire attack, Ethan instead learns two things: draining his blood releases his pain and his wolf, and he has a true mate—a vampire named Miguel.

Over four centuries old, strong, powerful, and vicious, Miguel Rodriguez walks through life as a shadow, without happiness or affection. When a young shifter tells Miguel they’re true mates, destined to be together, Miguel sends him away. But Ethan is persistent and being with him comes so naturally that Miguel can’t resist for long. Their challenge is staying alive so they can be together until forever comes.

Excerpt: “Ethan!”

I jerked, snapping my head up. Miguel was moving toward me at a fast clip, his lips pressed into tight lines, a pinched expression on his face.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, expediting my pace, wanting to reach him as fast as possible.

Just as soon as we were within arm’s distance, he pulled me to him, engulfing me in a hug. “Are you okay?” he asked, pressing his face against my hair.

“I’m fine,” I assured him. “What happened?”

He inhaled deeply. If he were a shifter, I would have thought he was trying to take in my scent. When the tension drained from his body and he sighed contentedly, I reckoned that was precisely what he’d been doing.

“You weren’t there,” he said. “When I came back to the room, you were gone.”

I immediately felt remorseful for having worried my mate. “I’m sorry,” I said, hoping he could hear the sincerity in my voice. “I reckoned you’d be busy with your…coven?” I paused and pulled back to look at him. He shrugged and then gave me a short nod. Taking that as confirmation that I’d used the correct terminology, I continued. “And I was hungry, so—”

“There’s food waiting for you,” he said. “I went just as soon as the sun set. I wanted to have it there when you woke up, but I was delayed dealing with Ted and those other guys.” He looked me over, his gaze flicking all around my face and body. “And then, by the time I got back, you were gone.”

He sounded just as dismayed the second time he reminded me of my absence as he had the first.

“I wasn’t leaving you,” I assured him.

“I know that,” he answered too quickly.

His tone was curt and his gaze dropped to the ground. Everything about the way he responded told me that I was, in fact, correct in my suspicion. I grinned to myself. Though he’d tried to push me away, it was clear that Miguel didn’t want me to leave. He wanted me by his side, hopefully as much as I wanted to be there.

Miguel took the bag from my hand and wrapped his arm around my shoulder, keeping me close. “Let’s go,” he said and started leading us down the street. “Next time you need something, let me know and I’ll take care of it. It isn’t safe for you to be out here at night. There are all sorts of dangers lurking around.”

“But you said you went out to get me food and you’re here now,” I pointed out.

The grin I got from the man was devilish. “That’s because I’m the biggest danger of all.”

My pecker thickened and lengthened in response to my mate’s words and tone. Was that weird? I mean, should a reminder of his violent nature be arousing? Before I could give it more thought, we turned the corner and I was lifted off my feet and pressed up against the side of a building.

“Miguel?” I asked, my voice cracking. He wedged his leg between mine and released his hold on my upper body just enough to make my groin drop onto his thigh, pressing my testicles down against the hard muscle. “Ugh,” I moaned, a pang of desire shooting through me.

He moved one hand to my neck, wrapping around it until his thumb rested on the front of my throat. I gulped and met his searing gaze.

“I didn’t like finding you missing,” he said, his voice rough. He moved his thumb in tiny increments back and forth across the throbbing vein in my neck. “Why is that?” he asked quietly, almost as if he was talking to himself. He moved his leg up and around, rubbing my groin with a magnificent friction. “I’ve been alone for a long time, even before I was turned. Why, all of a sudden, did I feel like something was missing just because you weren’t in my bed?”

“Mate,” I answered as I panted for air, that one word explaining everything.

He paused, no longer surprised by my response, I supposed.

“And you want this, right?” he said eventually. “You want to be with me?”

I nodded, the motion barely perceptible because of the hold he had on my neck. I was so unbelievably turned on by his strength, his power. By him.

“I want that too,” he said. “Heaven help me, but I want you to stay with me. But, Ethan, I will let you go if you say the word. I will never harm you.” He paused, looking deeply into my eyes. “You don’t need to run away from me. Just say the word and I’ll return you safely to your pack.”

“I wasn’t running away,” I croaked, not because of the pressure from his hand around my throat—that was welcome— but instead from the emotion and need that almost overwhelmed me. “I promise.”

Miguel dipped his face and pressed his lips against mine. “Okay,” he mumbled against my mouth and then nibbled on my lower lip. “I’m glad,” he whispered as he mouthed his way across my jaw to my ear. “But if you change your mind, wolf, it’s an open-ended offer. I’ll get you where you want to be safely, even—” His voice cracked, and I could feel his heart racing. “Even if it isn’t with me.”

Excerpt: “This is getting ridiculous,” I said as I flopped onto my back and sucked air into my burning lungs.

“What?” Korban sounded just as breathless.

“I don’t think it’s normal for people to, uh”—I tried to think of the right words—“spend this much time in bed.”

“I know.” He flung both arms out to his sides, landing one hand on my sweaty thigh. Then he skated it up to my groin and cupped my balls. “I feel sorry for them.”

I coughed out a laugh.

“What?”

“Nothing.” I shook my head. “What do you want to do now?”

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“I don’t know.” I shrugged. “I just thought we could do something new.”

“Something new?”

“Yes.” Not that what we’d been doing wasn’t good. It had been really good. But I was starting to get dehydrated.

“Umm, I saw this movie where one guy was leaning against the wall and the other guy was doing a handstand, so they were, like, face to dick and they sucked each other off. Like a standing-up sixty-nine.” He rolled onto his side, propped his elbow on the bed, and rested his head on his hand. “We could do that.”

That was not at all what I meant. I had been thinking cards or a movie. “I don’t think that’s—”

“No? Okay. I have another one,” he said excitedly, making me wonder how he had any energy left after the long day we’d had—we’d seen his uncle and other pack members, gone grocery shopping, and then spent the previous hour mauling each other. “In another movie, one guy was bent in half with his shoulders on the floor and his ankles practically pinned to his ears. Then the other guy was squatting over him and pushing his dick inside his hole.” He looked at me expectantly. “That’s an option too.”

“Please tell me you’re joking around,” I said, trying to remove the images he was painting from my mind.

“That one’s not good either? No worries, I’m sure I can think of more.” He pressed his lips together and wrinkled his brow. “I know. Do you have a weight bench, duct tape, and an ice bucket?”

I absolutely did not want to let him finish that description.

“I think the ways we’ve been doing it are perfect. Plus, they involve a bed, which is more comfortable than the floor, and they require considerably less acrobatics and no props.”

“Then why did you ask for ideas of what to do?” “I wasn’t asking for ideas of how to have sex!”

“Oh, thank God.” He sighed in relief. “I was worried one of us would sprain something. Plus, I’m all out of suggestions.”

Review: The only book I have ever read by Cardeno C. was Control, which was a co-written with Mary Calmes, so I was extremely interested in reading something from Cardeno alone. From the first word I was sucked into this unique and amazing story. Johnnie is such a fast and enjoyable read, with very little angst but enough heart and depth for me to fall in love.

To me, it is extremely hard to come up with something that makes a shifter story different from the others. I am jealous of Cardeno C.’s talent and imagination. I started this audio on Monday and listened straight through till Tuesday because I was so sucked in. I wanted to learn more and more about the rules of this group, and the gruff and tough Premier, Hugh, and the sensitive, abused Johnnie. I was taken on an adventure of discovery and love as Hugh and Johnnie find their way through the uncharted waters of this new and unconventional relationship in a Lion pride. I will say the end got a little sweet for my personal tastes…funny thing about that, though; Cardeno C. built the relationship so well that it didn’t bother me a whole lot. The only question I really wanted answered was the spines with the Premier. Once you listen to or read this story you will understand that question.

Narration: Lions and Siphons and Tremblay… Oh my. Oh sweet, sexy voiced Greg Tremblay, could you read every book to me? PLEASE! Your stinkin’ voice is so sexy, and you make me lose myself in your narrations. You read a sex scene like nobody’s business, and with very little fluctuation in your voice, tell me who is talking. Normally narrators make an attempt to sound extremely different depending on who is speaking. Your ability to distinguish a character with a subtle difference is intoxicating. Please keep on reading these wonderful M/M stories.

Ten Random Trivia Facts About Greg Tremblay:

1) I actually studied acting in college, along with opera, but got a degree in Computer Science.
2) My recording booth itself is only 3′ x 5′ x 6’…so when I read MM romance, I go INTO the closet. Ironic, no?
3) It takes between 5 and 7 hours of total production time with the finished manuscript to create 1 hour of final audio. Fiction Audio reads at about 9800 words per hour.
4) In addition to voice acting, I have been a Whale Watching guide, a Paramedic, and a Farrier (shoeing horses)
5) I rarely, if ever, listen to a complete book again once the production is finished. By the time I am done, I’ve read the book to myself, read it aloud, and listened to it for editing… and I’m on to the next story.
6) Anguish is the easiest emotion for me to portray, because a well-written script pulls you in, and it’s a completely one-person emotion – but it’s draining. I have cried in the booth more than a few times. Comic passages are the trickiest, because the proper timing and reaction between characters are essential.
7) I drink an average of 1.5 liters of water per hour while recording. Average recording sessions are 2-4 hours long between breaks.
8) As a kid, I lived with my family on a sailboat for a year.
9) My personal record for most distinct voices in a single book is 73
10) Coffee, Dairy and Alcohol are all bad for the voice. ..which means I have to moderate some of life’s greatest pleasures (not eliminate tho, I’m not crazy.).

Perfect ImperfectionsBlurb – Perfect Imperfections: Hollywood royalty Jeremy Jameson has lived a sheltered life with music as his sole focus and only friend. Before embarking on yet another international concert tour, he wanders into a bar in what he considers the middle-of-nowhere and meets a man who wins him over with his friendly smile and easy-going nature. Accountant slash bartender slash adventure-seeker Reg Moore has fun talking and drinking with The Jeremy Jameson and can’t say no when the supposedly straight rock star makes him a once in a lifetime offer: keep him company on his tour by playing the part of his boyfriend.

Listening to music, traveling the world, and jumping off cliffs is fun. Falling in love is even better. But to stay with Jeremy after the stage lights dim, Reg will need to help him realize there’s nothing pretend about their relationship.

Available at: Amazon | All Romance eBooks

Excerpt: Arching his eyebrows and twisting his lips in amusement, Reg said, “You’re saying you chose your musical instrument based on sex, which you don’t even like all that much?”

“That’s only one part of what I said. And besides, it was more the idea of sex. I started playing guitar when I was in middle school. It’s not like I’d done the deed at that point.”

“Okay, fine.” Reg rolled his eyes. “You chose to play guitar for a living because of theoretical sex and fame?”

“Yeah.” Jeremy nodded. “That’s about right.”

Sighing, Reg shook his head. “You can hear yourself, right?”

Jeremy wriggled around until he was comfortable and then lay on his side, facing Reg. “It’s not a weird answer, believe it or not. I bet most guitar players have the same two reasons, along with, ‘Because it looks cool.’ The only difference is they won’t admit it. I’m not screaming it from the rooftops either; usually I give some spiel about being inspired by my father. But you asked me for the truth, and you’re my pretend boyfriend, so I gave it to you.”

With a chuckle, Reg said, “Are you always one hundred percent honest in your pretend relationships?”

“This is my first one, so, yeah.”

“Fair enough. How about in your real relationships? Are you always completely honest?”

It didn’t take long for Jeremy to come up with several examples of situations when he’d been less than honest with his ex-girlfriends. “No. I haven’t always been honest.”

“Why not?”

After giving it some thought, Jeremy realized the fundamental reason was always the same. “It’s easier that way.”

“How do you mean?”

“I told you how it is with people in this industry. They’re not with me because of me, and even if they are, it’s a small part. Mostly, it’s the mystique of dating a musician or someone famous, or a hope that they’ll elevate their own careers. With people like that, there’s inevitable disappointment because what they came into the relationship wanting and what they end up getting aren’t the same thing. The last thing I need to do is add to that frustration and resentment and guarantee some tell-all exposé. So instead of being brutally honest, I spew the garbage they want to hear.”

Reg cleared his throat and licked his lips. “Uh, JJ, I don’t think what you’re describing is a real relationship.”

“What do you mean? Sure they are. Some people stick it out longer than others, but usually we stay together for close to a year at least. That’s a decent length of time for a relationship.”

“I know. But like with my brother and his wife, they fight and stuff, but they’re in it together. It’s not about what they can get from each other. Even my parents, before my dad died, they were like a team. Do you get what I’m saying?”

In theory, Jeremy knew, but that wasn’t his reality. “It’s not like that when you live your life in the spotlight.”

“I’m sorry,” Reg said, and he looked sad as he said it. “That must be really hard and lonely.”

“It’s fine.” Jeremy shrugged. “It’s all I know.”

Reg squared his shoulders and narrowed his eyes. It was his determined stance. Jeremy had seen it whenever the man was about to embark on a challenge nobody else would dare try. He had seen Reg dive off a bridge against the advice of the bungee-jump operator because his cord was so long that most of his body dipped into the lake underneath, face included. His expression had looked exactly the same when he had jumped off, and when he had bounced back, he had been smiling from ear to ear.

“Not anymore,” Reg said.

“What do you mean?” Jeremy asked.

“You’re with me now, so that won’t be all you know.”

“Uh, I don’t under—”

“I’m going to show you what it means to have a real relationship, JJ.” Reg paused and grinned. “Even if it is pretend.”

Excerpt: Snarls and yips woke me. I blinked and peered at the alarm clock. It was three in the morning. I hadn’t been able to fall asleep until after midnight. Damn my brothers for screwing around in the middle of the night. I thought about getting up and kicking their butts, but I needed more sleep. I’d deal with them in the morning.

My eyelids dropped closed but snapped open when I heard a howl. That wasn’t Edward or Bernie. I’d heard that howl before. At a funeral. Lee Berura’s funeral.

I shot up to a sitting position. What was Kai doing in my house?

“Calm down,” my father said frantically. “You need to calm down.”

The snarling intensified.

“Can’t you get him to stop?” Bernie said.

“You think I’d be holding out on you if I could do that?” Kelly hissed.

Kai howled again.

“We won’t hurt you.”

Just the idea of someone hurting my Kai had me jumping out of bed.

No, I reminded myself. He isn’t yours.

He whimpered, the sound so pained, so pitiful, so forlorn, that I couldn’t stay away.

“What’s going on out here?” I said as I stepped out of my room.

My father, Bernie, and Kelly were standing at the end of the hallway, where they’d cornered a snarling wolf. At the sound of my voice, his ears perked up and he whined.

Though I should have gone back into my room, closed the door, and let them deal with the man who had betrayed me, I couldn’t. Kai looked taller and broader than when I’d last seen him in this form, which made sense because he had been sixteen then and he would have been expected to grow in the dozen years since.

What I wouldn’t have expected was to see his fur matted and filthy, his skin almost hanging off him. I’d never seen a thinner wolf.

“What’s wrong with him?” I demanded.

“Oh, now he cares,” Kelly said sarcastically. “Isn’t that convenient?”

There was nothing, absolutely nothing, convenient about my mate being hurt.

“We have this under control, Abel,” my father said. “Sorry we woke you.”

“Yeah, Abel,” Kelly sneered. “Go run away and hide again.”

When they both turned back to Kai and reached for him, he shook and cowered.

I couldn’t have stopped myself from rushing over to him if I’d wanted to, and I didn’t want to. “Get away from him!” I shouted as I shoved between them and dropped to my knees. “Move back.”

I didn’t bother to turn around, so I didn’t know if they listened. I didn’t care. Because the second I hit the ground, my mate crawled into my lap, curled into a circle, and fell asleep.

In that moment, I realized that whatever had happened between us, however much he had hurt me, and even if he continued to reject me, my father and mother were wrong. Our bond wasn’t broken, and I would never get over Kai. I didn’t want to.

Excerpt: It should have been terrifying, being held in Jude’s arms and knowing for the first time that he felt more than friendship for me. But it wasn’t. It also should have been scary to pull my head back and look into his eyes knowing for the first time that I felt the same way. But it wasn’t.

Making the first move by leaning in for a kiss, well, that was knee-bucklingly frightening. But I did it anyway.

I brushed my lips against Jude’s, just barely at first, then again with more pressure.

He stood perfectly still, stiff and unyielding in my arms. “Are you drunk?”

“Not this time, no.” I shook my head. “Why didn’t you ever say anything after that day at The Other Team?”

His eyes widened. “You remember that?”

“I do now.” I slowly raised my hand and trailed my fingertips over his eyebrows.

“E, what’re you doing?”

At any other place in time, I would have pulled back. But now that I knew how he felt about me, how I felt about him…now that I knew what we could have together…nothing and nobody could have stopped me from going after Jude, not even our own fears.

“What I should have done a long time ago.”

ashotatforgivenessBlurb – A Shot at Forgiveness: Sometimes to find love, you must first learn forgiveness.

A dozen years, two thousand miles, and a law degree after high school, Rafi Steiner continues to harbor resentment toward Isaac Jones, his childhood bully turned NBA star. When Isaac appears at Rafi’s favorite restaurant acting like a long-lost friend, Rafi bluntly dismisses him.

Excerpt: “Rafi? Rafael Steiner, is that you?” a dick-hardeningly deep voice said from behind me.

I didn’t recognize the voice, but I put on my best smile as I turned around, hoping for a body to match the husky rasp.

“It is you! Rafi Steiner all grown up!”

I won the world record for turning a smile upside down the moment I saw him.

“Isaac Jones,” I said drolly, and then I turned back around. That was it. No “how great to see you” or “how have you been” or any other bullshit we’d both know I didn’t mean, because, honestly? Fuck him. I would have pretended I didn’t recognize him at all, but nobody would buy that.

At six feet seven inches tall, with two hundred and twenty-five pounds of pure muscle rippling under mocha-colored skin, closely shorn black hair, and a winning smile, there was no way to miss Isaac Jones. He’d been an intimidating presence as a teenager in our high school and that hadn’t changed as an adult.

________________

Excerpt 2: “Rafi!” Isaac gasped. Then his eyes widened and he raked his gaze down my body, even slower than he had in front of my apartment. That Incredible-Hulk-size frame trembled, and he whimpered before gulping two times in quick succession. “Uh,” he said and then took in a deep breath as he dragged his gaze to my face. “I hope you still like lasagna.”

I stood there, staring. Well, mostly staring, I was also salivating just a little at the thought of my favorite meal. I’d skipped breakfast and had a protein bar for lunch. Given the chance, I could’ve probably inhaled an entire pan of lasagna all by myself.

“But if you don’t,” he added quickly, “I also have spaghetti with meatballs and a Greek salad. It has feta. I know you like feta.”

My jaw dropped. And not just because he was right about the feta. I mean, he was right: I did love feta. Especially sheep’s milk feta. But that wasn’t the point.

“It’s sheep’s milk,” he said. “I noticed it said that on the menu, so I had to get it.”

What exactly was happening?

Review: I think I have to begin this review with a PSA. You see, I am an unashamed total fangirl of Cardeno C. I mean, I think Cardeno C. could write the phone book and I would pre-order it. ‘Kay? Got that? Well then, it should be no surprise to you that I love the entire Home series. My favorite of the series is The One Who Saves Me, but this book was definitely a very close second. There is just something about the connection between Nate and Jake. It’s like destiny and fate got together and made these two men for each other. Those kinds of books are like my crack, just sayin’.

You see, Nate and Jake have been the other half of one another since before they were born. Their mothers were best friends, and they decided to have their children at the same time. So, Nate and Jake were born on the same day, grew up next door to one another and when it was time to be grown ups and move away, they did that together too. As just friends. Why, you ask? Well, when Nate came out early, Jake was supportive, but he was also doing every willing female within a one hundred mile radius, or so it seemed. So Nate figured Jake was straight, and he would just do his best to find love and try to remember that Jake was not an option. Until he was.

Once all of their misunderstandings and miscommunications were resolved, it was like they were given license to have sex. Lots and lots of sex. I guess they were making up for lost time. In between bouts of sex, there was a great love story too. These two were soul mates after all. They experienced a love most people only dream about, and I loved reading it.

These two men not only found each other, but they found a family. Some of this family has been there the whole time, and some of it comes in along the way. There are moments of doubt from Nate and some moments of bravado and territory claiming from Jake, but, overall, this is just a great love story.

Now. We all know very few books are perfect, and this one is no exception. So, yes there was A LOT of sex. Maybe more than the story needed, but I am not going to complain too much about that. The dual point of view didn’t bother me too much, but it can get a tad redundant when entire conversations are repeated verbatim. And, last but not least, the ending was almost too easy. I know, I know. It’s romance and they are supposed to ride off into the sunset, but it isn’t always that simple.

With all that said, though, I just have to stress the fact that I love this book. This series was like crack for me, and I would highly recommend a binge read of the whole thing if you are in the mood for reading some great love stories with guys who are soul mates, fated mates, or some other kind of lovers with their stories written in the stars. It may not always be 100% believable, but boy, does it make me happy.

Dividers

Review: First there is Eli, young (eighteen), brash and gay. Then there is Seth, twenty-seven and just landed his first job as an associate Rabbi. And straight. Walk with Me is all about delayed gratification – you never doubt these two will end up together – but it takes literally years to get there. Eli has to grow up. Seth has to admit he has feelings for the boy and, well, life has to happen. Granted, Eli has the one up on Seth in that he fell in love with him during summer camp, where Seth was a counselor, but Seth can be a little slow on the uptake. The HEA we all wait for doesn’t happen until about 2/3 of the way through the book, when Eli has graduated from college, but when it gets there – WOW. Worth the wait.

Honestly, it takes so long for Seth to decide it’s okay to love Eli it seems a little surreal when it happens. What’s funny is that Eli has the same reaction, so the last third of the book is Seth proving himself to Eli. But prove himself he does, and in the end, you are really rooting for them as a couple. As Seth says, “What had started out as a complete lack of awareness when he was a kid, and then morphed into nervous and amused interest when he was a young man had grown and flourished over the years and now Eli Block was my confidant, my friend, the person who made me laugh with joy and relax in safety. It has been a slow, gradual process taking him from a boy I didn’t notice to a man who, to me, took over the room until I could see nothing else. Eli was my everything and my heart hurt looking at him.”

Throughout the book, Cardeno C. gives us lively and hilarious anecdotes of all the Jewish weddings Seth officiates, and these help to move the story along and keep us entertained. Oh, what we will do for love. I would recommend this book; it was a great ending to Cardeno C.’s first series. In the dedication, Cardeno C. says that she hopes it made us smile. It did.

Review: Oh, how I love Cardeno C.’s work. I love the characters, love the sex, love the HEAs and the slow build up to that happiness.

The One Who Saves Me has all the above components. It takes decades to build this relationship; decades of boyfriends, family, and, most of all, decades of learning to trust. This story is so intense, and Cardeno C.’s amazing storytelling keeps you going until the end, when all is explained. And what an explanation it was. I had trouble breathing as Caleb was describing and touching each of the tattoos and piercings Andrew had gotten over the years, which is intertwined with some of the best sex ever written in a story.

This amazingly frustrating journey follows the lives of two young men, one a genius following his Dad’s dream of becoming a doctor, the other following his own dreams of becoming a photographer. What stays consistent throughout the journey is the friendship that remains true, and the side benefit of no-strings-attached sex . The frustrating part for me was how long it took for both of them to realize that they belonged together, and to stop looking for “the one”. But, as I mentioned earlier, it was really worth the wait.

Read the Home series. Read all of Cardeno C. Books. Enjoy the sex. Enjoy the love. I don’t think you’ll regret it.

Review: I have to be honest, when I read the ebook of Control, it wasn’t my favorite. I didn’t hate it but I just didn’t really care for Vy. He came across as arrogant and kind of whiny. A couple times while reading it, I literally sat here saying out loud, “Yes, we know, you are the kuar of the ket…I get it!” When I saw this available for review, at first I didn’t even consider requesting it, but then I saw who narrated it and had to give it a chance. Greg Tremblay has quickly become a favorite narrator for me, and even more so after listening to Control. He took a character I didn’t particularly like and made me see him differently.

When I read Vy, he was arrogant and whiny; listening to GregTremblay read Vy, though, he came across more as vulnerable and uncertain, which made me connect with him a little more and be able to enjoy the story better. It still had the “okay, we get it” moments, but I was much more connected with the characters while listening to the audio than I was when reading the book. Now, Robert I liked when I read the book, and fell for him even more in the audio. He is the more calm and rational of the two of them, and just wants Vy to want him for him…so sweet! I said it in a previous review, but it applies here also, and deserves to be said again, Greg Tremblay does an amazing job making the voices of the characters unique and individual. In this story, with the different POVs, you always can tell who it is that is speaking just by their voice. The accents are awesome and Vy’s second in command, Lou, might be one of my favorite female voices I have heard done by a male narrator. It still amazes me, listening to these audiobooks, that it is one person doing all the voices. Greg Tremblay is a master at it!

For David and Jonathan to build a future together, they’ll both have to dig deep: David for the courage to share himself in a way he’s never considered and Jonathan for the strength to tell the truth.

Dividers

Review: The tone of this story is set by the opening line, “Do you believe in love at first sight?” And thus we are invited into a fairy tale romance, but we are not asked to believe along with Jonathon, rather, to enjoy the story and watch what unfolds.

This story, of all of the Home series books, is the most cheesy, sweet, and unbelievable, but it is acknowledged by the characters in such a way as to include us in the story and participate in the disbelief David feels at his words and actions. We don’t scoff at the sweetness because we feel the earnestness that Jonathon and David feel; we are swept into the whirlwind of emotions and uncharacteristic actions that occur so rapidly in the story. At the same time, the very basics of living are transposed on the characters: cooking meals and doing laundry, daycare for Sam, and working for a living are balancing the sweetness of the new love and intense physical relationship that Jonathon and David are experiencing.

And time passes. Time is one of the best parts of this series. Each book is a standalone story, but characters crossover into other books at very different times in their own stories. What this use of time does for us as the reader is give us a sense of maturity in the relationship – Yes, they move in together very quickly, but they do real things and have real bumps in the road, and the bonds that grow are felt to be accurate to any couple in their situation. In this particular story, this means that the fairy tale aspect dissolves into a really sweet story as time passes, and the characters grow so much that they get recognised as being real to the reader as well.

This is a character driven book, light on plot but strong in character development and relationship building. Jonathon grows into a confident young man, aware of his strength and sure of his place in David’s life, and David grows into an aware partner, capable of supporting another and able to show his love of family.

Cardeno C. has created a world in Emile City that is inviting and charming. It is an ideal in equality that I would love to see in reality. The craftsmanship involved in creating this series is absolutely mind boggling. I can only imagine the flowcharts and timelines that must have been used in writing this series to incorporate all of the characters and accurately reflect their individual situations at an appropriate time in each book. The bonus ending added to each book with the rerelease of the series is the icing on the cake, still sweet but adding a richness that is appreciated and resonates with each couple. I can so easily picture the dinner that is being cooked in David and Jonathon’s kitchen.

Love at First Sight is my personal favorite of the Home series, although He Completes Me is a very close second. I love it for the guaranteed feeling of happiness I get each time I read it. I also like that Sam is simply a part of Jonathon; that David loves him first for that, and grows to love fatherhood second. I will continue to recommend this book as a feel good story, one that delivers far more depth and comfort than could be believed possible by the description and beginning alone.

If Ben wants to maintain his hold on his happiness, he’ll have to decide what’s important and own up to the truth of who he is. The trouble is figuring out just what that truth is.

Dividers

Review: When I started this book, I was a little thrown off by Ben directly addressing me, the reader, but as the story went on I found that I liked it, and it made me feel more involved with the story. And Ben was right, most of the time: when he was addressing me through the first half of the book, I wanted to knock some sense into him. Alright…I did feel a little bad for the poor guy; the ones I really wanted to knock some sense into were his parents!

Micah, on the other hand, was awesome right from the start…loved him! He was strong and confident and wasn’t going to put up with the hot and cold and back and forth with Ben. The two of them together were just adorable, almost sickly sweet (but I like that kind of thing). The banter back and forth between all of the characters was great and had me laughing. Micah’s parents, especially his mom, were hilarious!

So, my issue with the book, and the reason it wasn’t a 5 star read for me, is that the second half seemed really rushed. The first half of the book is spent dealing with Ben’s struggle with being (or not wanting to be) gay. Then, as soon as he accepts himself and being with Micah, time just speeds up; not that I didn’t enjoy seeing how their lives ended up playing out, and them getting their HEA, but it was a little too much of a whirlwind to me.

I’m a little OCD about reading books in a series in order and hadn’t read any of the other books in this collection. Although Just What the Truth Is is a standalone, as other couples were introduced I kept feeling as though I was missing something, which is completely my crazy issue, but now I’m going to go get the rest of the series so I can meet all the other guys!

Review: Any book written by Cardeno C. is bound to be a pleasure, as I enjoy the aww factor that’s a part of every book written by this author. Johnnie is a shifter story that did not go in the direction I assumed it would. Just when I figured there wasn’t a fresh shifter story to be told, Cardeno C. came up with a beauty.

Although the story is told by Hugh, and is from his point-of-view, this book is about Johnnie—the who, what, and why of him is the basis of the story. There is some pretty decent world building done in this story too, to balance the information we are absorbing about the characters. In fact, the author is able to have me suspend disbelief very quickly and become invested in Johnnie’s welfare almost immediately. The yearning he has for an identity is easily seen by the reader, while Hugh struggled with the concept at a level that infuriated me. This is exactly how a good author creates a bond with the reader and the characters in their books. Reacting emotionally to words on a page is a gift for a reader, and having the talents and skills to constantly create these stories in fresh new ways is but one of the accomplishments at Cardeno C.’s disposal.

Creating a relationship that gives so much value to the characters is another. The growth of the strengths and abilities between the Premier and the Siphon is a reflection of the personal growth of their relationship. It’s that aww factor at work—the more you truly love and appreciate another, the stronger you are as an individual. This is the lesson of this story and is a favorite of the author. The “moral of the story” aspect of Cardeno C.’s books is another favorite part of reading them for me.

Read this book if you like a shifter story, and enjoy the twist of a well written world delivered in its pages. Read this book if you like a definite HEA, full of hope and a future full of joy. My only complaint is that the story was over far too soon. At just under 60,000 words it’s a full novel length, but the story was so good I would have liked it to be longer.
