Christmas in Australia

Hi, thanks for having me.  Did you know it’s only a few weeks till Christmas? It’s scary to think how quickly it comes around each year. This season is a bit of a mixed bag for me. I don’t know whether to be happy about it or not.

On one hand Christmas in Australia means hot weather, BBQ’s and swimming, either at the beach or in the pool. It means cold cuts of meat, salads and icecream. I know this is hard for most of you to comprehend as I assume you’ll be having snow and horrible freezing temperatures. This is why I love Christmas in Australia. Snow may be pretty to look at but in reality, it’s awful to live in; it is for a sun-loving Aussie anyway. :)

On another good note, my husband will be home (he works away) so it’s great that the kids and I will have him here and no doubt the day will start super early for us; if you have young kids you’ll understand the pain.

On a not so good note, I have my father-in-law and sister-in-law visiting from Sydney and staying in my house. FIL is a decent guy and we get on okay, except for the fact that he’s a raging bigot and believes all gays should be put on the boats with the refugees and sent somewhere else. I try and overlook this for the sake of peace and harmony. I’m lucky my husband doesn’t think like his father. I guess if he did, I wouldn’t have married him. SIL doesn’t think like her father either but we don’t get on. She is single and has been ever since I’ve known her. She just turned 40 and there’s no partner on the horizon. She loves drama. Lives for it even, and anything that happens turns out to be a life and death scenario – according to her. She can be a little hard to take. So my husband is home for four weeks before he has to return to work and my in-laws are here for three.

So here’s to biting my tongue for three weeks for the sake of peace in our household. They don’t visit often (thankfully) but every time they do it gets harder to keep my thoughts to myself.

I hope everyone out there has a peaceful and happy day.

Merry Christmas :)

Blurb: Two best friends take a year off to find themselves… and end up finding each other.

Joshua Simpson has just finished four years at Purdue University, but that’s not why he’s buzzing with excitement. Once they’ve said goodbye to their families, Josh and his best friend Alex are taking off to discover America in an old but reliable VW van, planning on not seeing snow for an entire year.

Josh has always considered himself straight—except for that one time in college—so when he and Alex are living in such close proximity on the road, he’s unsure what these new feelings mean. Is it because they’re spending 24/7 together, or is it something deeper? And does it really matter since Josh has only ever seen Alex with women?

While in Oregon, Josh meets Johnno, a sexy but confusing Aussie surfer. While having an impromptu surfing lesson, Johnno helps Josh realize who he is and what he wants—but Alex’s reaction leaves Josh confused.

From a Montana ranch to the bright lights and dangerous streets of Los Angeles to a dark and lonely deserted highway in Alabama, join Josh and Alex as they drive around the US, discovering not only who they are, but who they can be together.

RJ JonesAbout the Author: R.J. Jones started as a reader and eventually made the progression to reviewing. It wasn’t until two men popped into her thoughts, insisting on telling her their story that she started to write.

It started with one scene. A hot and dirty one in the shower…

R.J.’s initial thought was if she could write their scene then they’d shut up and allow her to concentrate on other aspects of her day. Not so. That shower scene ended up being 3000 words long and three hours of work.  And still, they didn’t shut up.  They told her their entire story and she didn’t sleep for days. Sometimes she couldn’t keep up with what they were telling her and she had to keep a notebook by her bed.

Whilst she was writing their story a side character decided he needed his story told too. Then other characters followed suit.

You see the problem? If she ever wants to sleep again then she needs to write.

R.J. is a wife and a mother to two boys. She is surrounded by males. Even her dog is a boy.

Musicals

My mum used to love musicals. She also used to sing and dance with the local theatre group. To a young teenager it was pretty embarrassing when you’d have a friend over after school and your mother would be singing at the top of her lungs.

But then there were the weekends Mum and I would sit on the couch together and watch the Saturday afternoon movie and share a block of chocolate. Nearly every weekend there would be a musical on and we’d lap them up like greedy beggers. Our favourite was The Great Race with Tony Curtis, Natalie Wood and Jack Lemmon. Even now, almost twenty years after Mum’s death, I still watch this movie whenever it comes on with a block of chocolate and a secret smile. My husband thinks I’m weird. He doesn’t understand the appeal of musicals. Some of my mum’s favourite were the classics. The Sound of Music, Victor Victoria and The King and I. If it had singing and dancing, Mum and I were all over it.

I loved Grease and my girlfriend had it on VHS when it first came out. I remember having a sleep over and we watched that sucker again and again and again. I think we counted eighteen times in one weekend. It was safe to say we were fairly obsessed. I mean, who didn’t want to be Sandy and get swept of their feet but a handsome Danny?

So when I saw the submission call for an MM musical themed anthology, I knew I had to write about Grease. Let me be honest here. If I watched Grease now, I’d be rooting for Danny and Kenickie to get it on.

Who wouldn’t?

The One That I Want

Excerpt

“I HAVE a delivery here for Mr. Jason Jennings.”

“That’s me. Thanks,” I said, signing the slip for the enormous package.

Once I closed my apartment door, I put the box on the counter and read the accompanying card.

Put these on. All of them. I’ll pick you up at 1:00 p.m. P xxx

Pushing aside the enormous amounts of tissue paper, I pulled out the items one by one. Black jeans, white T-shirt, and black boots. A black leather jacket with T-birds written on the back. Finally, a black wig, complete with sideburns and Danny Zuko big hair.

It occurred to me then that Paul wanted me to go out—in public—looking like this. Oh no. Where the hell was he taking me dressed like this?

My phone buzzed with a message.

Stop thinking and start dressing. P xx

I did as I was told and stopped thinking about it, but when I looked in the mirror after dressing, I looked ridiculous. I sure hoped Paul was dressed as Sandy. That would be the only way he’d look even remotely as ridiculous as I did.

But when I opened my door to Paul, my heart stopped.

Kenickie Murdock was standing in front of me. Complete with cigarette behind the ear. Paul was dressed in blue jeans and sky-blue T-shirt, just like Kenickie. His wig was the same as mine but brown instead of black. He wore a pair of aviators, chewed gum, and had slung his leather jacket over one shoulder.

I was going to come on the spot.

He snapped his gum. “Hey, baby, you wanna hickey from Kenickie?”

“Ungh.”

Paul chuckled. “I see words have fled your company again. Come here, I need to kiss you.”

I put my hand on his chest, stopping his advance. “Uh uh. If you touch me I’ll come in my pants.”

Paul laughed so loud, Dave ran off down the hallway. “Okay, I’ll try not to touch you. C’mon, I want to get there early.”

“There? You actually want to go out looking like this?”

“Don’t worry, we’ll blend right in.”

Black and BluheBlurb: Grayson Black has never forgiven himself for not saving his identical twin brother, Jet, from a savage beating at their father’s hands ten years ago. Jet’s near-death never would have happened if Gray hadn’t been so focused on his boyfriend at the time. He has sworn to take care of his brother ever since. Gray can’t afford a distraction from his self-imposed mission, the type of distraction presented by the gorgeous blond showing up at their gigs.

Kris Larson is a firefighter with the San Francisco Fire Department. Since splitting from his girlfriend, his favorite way to spend nights off is watching the Black Brothers play in the bars of the Bay Area, especially the guitarist. But it’s not until the brothers are left homeless after a fire at their apartment building that Kris has the opportunity to know the real person behind the brooding façade.

Gray fights his attraction to Kris, but with a meddlesome twin who just wants him to be happy, it’s a losing battle. Before Gray and Kris can have a lasting relationship, though, Gray must learn to forgive himself, let go of the past, and lay more than one demon to rest.

Excerpt: I WOKE the next morning to the smell of coffee and it took me a minute to realize I wasn’t in my own bed. I presumed it was Kris’s arms that were wrapped around me. I was in his bed and there was a semihard cock nestled against my ass. It must’ve been Jet who put the coffee on, and my mind was eased knowing he’d stayed the night too.

The memory of yesterday’s events flooded my brain and bile rose in my stomach. I was such an idiot and the embarrassment was mortifying. Kris probably thought I was a right nut job.

If he thought that, why is he wrapped around you like a lover right now?

I had no idea. I knew I didn’t want to move. Ever. I wished time would stop and I could stay here with Kris’s arms around me, feeling safe and loved. Nothing could harm me here. No thoughts, memories, or people could get to me in this perfect little bubble.

I didn’t want to move, but I wanted to see what Kris looked like in his sleep. Did he wear that little smile that seemed permanently etched on his features?

I rolled over, ensuring Kris’s arms never left my body, and was met by an icy blue stare, a small smile making his eyes gleam. My own smile made his get bigger in return.

Neither of us spoke. We lay facing each other in complete silence. Kris’s hand moved hesitantly under my shirt and rubbed gentle circles at the small of my back and his smile grew wider as I melted into the pillow, savoring his touch on my skin.

Placing my hand on his cheek, I leaned in and pressed my lips to his. There was no heat, no pressure, just a gentle coming together.

I pulled back and Kris’s eyes remained closed for a long second afterward, like he was memorizing the feel of our lips together.

“Hey,” I whispered.

Kris’s smile seemed never-ending. “Hey.”

Excerpt: We talked a little as we ate.He was right, it was one of the best sauces he’d made, but what should have been a relaxed meal felt strained. Although Cam sat opposite, he didn’t raise his head to look at me, preferring to play with his fork and push his meal around the plate while he spoke. After we had cleaned up the dinner plates, we sat on the couch to watch TV, like any other night, but Cam’s shoulders were tight with tension, and he became more and more rigid as the night wore on.

I patted my thigh. “Lie down, Romeo.”I wanted to help ease his stress.

Cameron lay down with his head on my lap and I ran my fingers through his hair. We spoke occasionally about the show we were watching, his eyes never leaving the screen, and I could feel him start to relax as I rubbed his scalp. His breath evened out, and he was asleep. We stayed like that till the end of the next show when I woke him and suggested we go to bed. He stood and yawned, then stumbled down the hallway as I flicked off the lights and followed.

He came out of the bathroom as I walked in and I wrapped my arms around his waist and laid my head against his shoulder. Cam wrapped me up in a tight hold as he sighed and melted into me.

“You sure you’re okay?” I asked once more. He wasn’t himself, and my stomach twisted with concern.

“Hmm, need some sleep, I think. I’ll be better tomorrow.”

“All right, go climb in to bed, I’ll be there in a minute.”

I brushed my teeth, then climbed into bed, where he gathered me in his arms, his chest to my back, hugging me close.

“Love makes you brave, Romeo,” I whispered.

“You make me brave, babe,” he replied sleepily.
