Meet Carrie!

TNA_Signature_CarrieHello, everyone, my name is Carrie!  I am a mom to three wonderful college boys – 2 already there and one beginning in the fall. We are a bicoastal family with 2 kids on the east coast and home central being in Seattle. Don’t get me wrong – I am a southern girl. I grew up with formal dinners every Sunday after church, and sweet tea. I learned good posture with Emily Post’s Book of Etiquette on my head, quite literally. So what am I doing in Seattle? No clue. I can say that I love books like my grandmother loved her gardening club. I read. A lot. I tend to have a voracious appetite for books, which can get expensive since I was taught to speed read in third grade and I have never looked back. As such, I love it when a book makes me pause – slaps me mid sentence, and says slow down and enjoy me – let me tell you a story…

I want to start writing about and sharing those books with you. I will read just about anything but gravitate towards romance and mystery, with a little erotic sci-fi thrown in for good measure. If you come by my house, I will make you a mimosa and we can talk books – I can’t wait!

Welcome, Carrie! And now here’s what’s on tap:

A Welcome To New Reviewers And A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week

Sneak Peek

Cheers, everyone, and thanks for dropping by to see what we have coming up for you in the week ahead!

First, though, I’m so thrilled to introduce two new reviewers to the TNA team: one comes to us brand new to the reviewing biz, the other is a long time veteran reviewer in the M/M genre.

Welcome to Karen and Sadonna! Now, here’s a bit about them:

Dividers

TNA_Signature_KarenAbout Karen:

Well, Hi, I’m Karen! I am a 36 year old from Michigan. I have a great husband who’s only complaint is that I am addicted to reading (still trying to figure out why this is a problem…I don’t get it) but, he’s right, I know I’m addicted (hey! at least I admit it, well to you, not to him!). For about the last 2 years or so I have read pretty much exclusively MM. Reading is an escape for me, it is what i use to get out of my head and just relax, which is why you can usually find me on my breaks at work sitting with my Kindle, who am I kidding any free moment I have is usually spent with my Kindle. I am looking forward to trying out doing reviews and I am really happy to be here! Alright…enough about me…back to my book :o)

TNA_Signature_SadonnaAbout Sadonna:

Hi I’m Sadonna. Just like Madonna, but with an S ;) Yes, that’s my actual legal name. I used to hate it when I was a kid, but then I learned to embrace it! I’m 52 (when the heck did that happen??) and I work in downtown Chicago as a corporate type in HRIT – but I have a 60 mile commute each way, so I have a LOT of time to read and watch the world go by from my express Coach that has wifi. :)

I’m a long time voracious reader who read nearly every book in my grammar school library and left the public library with stacks of books each week. My sister was always mad that I wouldn’t play with her because I was reading. As an adult, for years I read pretty much historical and literary fiction (history major in college) and nonfiction. I was introduced to m/m in 2010 when I saw one of my friends had Special Forces on her Goodreads feed. Now 2300+ books and counting later, I still blame her and Aleks Voinov (and I have told him so :D). I currently have over 9000 books in my Calibre library as well as over 1000 physical books in my house. So I guess you could say I have a problem. ;)

Besides reading, I love to travel all over the US and the world – 15 countries and counting. I’m a big art lover and I spend a lot of time in art museums whenever I travel. I used to say I could live in bookstores and art museums, but it seems bookstores are practically becoming museums now! I also love the opera both live and at the movie theaters and have seen some gorgeous productions in Chicago, the Met and Covent Garden. I dream of Vienna and La Scala someday! I also like to go to the theater and see live music whenever possible. I also have my own art in the form of tattoos – two so far, with plans for lots more. :P

Now, here’s what we have on tap this week!

A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week, The Year In Reviews

A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week – And A Quick Recap Of Our Best Books of 2014

Sneak PeekHappy (almost) New Year, everyone! We’re bringing 2014 to an auspicious close, with some great reviews and guests dropping by to help us ring in a brand new year.

Before I get to the schedule, though, I want to do a quick recap of our Best Books of 2014 selections, and offer a congratulations—not to mention our gratitude—to all the authors whose hard work and dedication to their craft brought us so much joy (and sometimes sorrow) this year. And, P.S., there’s also time to enter some of the giveaways.

I also want to share a slight change we’ll be making to the review system here at TNA in 2015. For those of you who missed my blog post about the ratings system a month or so back, in short, I am not a particular fan of it. The purpose of taking the time to write a review—deconstructing a plot and the characters, and putting them all back together again to point out what did, or didn’t, work in a book—has nothing to do with numbers and everything to do with our ability to articulate our thoughts and feelings about what we’ve read. So, beginning January 1, we’ll no longer be offering a numerical designation on the books we review here at TNA. We will, however, have simple ways for you to get a quick overview of our thoughts about the books we’ll be featuring in the coming years, two being ones you may have already seen—the TNA Page Turner and A Small Gem, which are reserved for those novels and short stories that we feel go beyond any 5 Star rating we would normally give.

Now, on to a quick and comprehensive list of our Top Reads for this year:

A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week

It’s a Blogiversary Giveaway and A Sneak Peek at the Coming Week!

TNA BadgeThree years ago today, I opened WordPress.com and created a new URL in my own little corner of the world wide web. My first review of Hayden Thorne’s Renfred’s Masquerade was one I’d written for Top2Bottom Reviews, and because the book was just that exquisite, I decided to import it and test it as my very first post. Nearly 3000 posts later, we’ve come to this day, with a staff of some of the best reviewers I could have ever hoped to work with.

On this, The Novel Approach’s 3rd blogiversary, I want to say thank you so much for making us what we are today. I look forward to many more years of bringing you reviews, new authors as well as some of your favorites, and as a gift to you, our readers and followers, I want to give back to you in this small way. Here’s A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week

TNA BadgeCheers, everyone, and many thanks for stopping by to see what we have coming up this week at The Novel Approach.

As we head into this holiday week here in the states, I want to take a moment to say thank you so much for your support of what we do here each day. Without the encouragement of readers, authors, and publishers, we wouldn’t be here.

I also want to extend a special word of gratitude to my team of reviewers: Tina, Jackie, Lynn, Lana, Kim, Sammy, Jules, Kathie, Chris, Rena, and Taz. They are the foundation upon which I’ve been able to build TNA into what it is today, and I’m humbled and honored to work with each and every one of them, so thank you!

And now, here’s what’s on tap in the week ahead.

Here’s A Sneak Peek at the Coming Week

TNA BadgeGreetings, everyone! Thanks so much for popping in to see what we have coming up in the week ahead. We have lots of great blog tours, author guest posts, giveaways, and reviews in store for you, so have a look-see and what’s in store.

A quick note about the informal poll results we ran last week on the topic of ratings. Of the participating voters, a full 70% of you indicated that we could do away with a numerical rating system altogether, and it wouldn’t affect our reviews in the slightest, so that’s something we’ll be considering doing away with in the coming weeks.

In the meantime, though, here’s what’s on tap.

A Sneak Peek and An Uber-Unscientific Poll

TNA BadgeGreetings, everyone, and welcome back to a look at what we’ve got coming up in the week ahead, but first I’d love your feedback.

You may have missed it, but earlier this week I wrote a blog post about ratings. For two days, the review team here at TNA and I had long conversations about assigning numerical ratings to our reviews and, as Rena so deftly stated it, quantifying the unquantifiable. If you’ve seen the post, you know by now that I loathe ratings with every fiber of my being because it’s often little more than giving a number to something as intangible as the feelings we have for a book. Trust me when I tell you there are times it’s more difficult to come up with the number than it is to write the review, and, let’s face it, in the end it’s the words that matter with books, regardless of which side of them we land on—author or reader/reviewer.

So, what I’m asking of you today is to take a brief moment of your time, both readers and authors, please, to weigh in on my desire to do away with the numerical rating system here at The Novel Approach, and to simply allow our reviews to speak for themselves. In order to continue recognizing those books that we want to designate as standouts, however, they would be awarded the designation “A TNA Page Turner” (thank you for that, Taz!), because when we really love a book we do feel it should be offered a little special affection. :) I also welcome your comments on the subject below.

Many thanks and warm regards!

Now, here’s what’s up in the week ahead.
