Guest Post and Giveaway: The Loving Blitz Blog Tour with Charlie Cochet

Loving-Blitz-BT-Banner

Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me on another stop of the Loving Blitz mini blog tour, celebrating the release of the fourth novella in my North Pole City Tales series. In this series, most of the stories take place in North Pole City where the majority of our elf heroes live. Even Jack Frost has a modest little palace in North Pole City.

This Christmas themed city is vast with all of its quaint little shops decorated with twinkling lights, shimmering tinsel, and glittering baubles. The scents of Christmas are in the air, cinnamon, roasted chestnuts, nutmeg, spiced apple, and more. You’ll find an array of tasty treats, sugar cookies, fudge, cakes, pies, puddings, buns, and a host of other delights.

The snow-filled streets are bustling with busy elves, and you’ll hear the jingling bells of horses pulling sleighs. In the center of town, you’ll find the White Hart, the Rein Dear Squadron’s favorite pub. After a hard day of building gingerbread houses for elves less fortunate, the handsome and dashing elf pilots gather to make merry, drinking their favorite holiday cocktails, or a hot cup of cocoa to the sounds of Christmas carols.

Meanwhile the King’s Toy Soldiers patrol the streets, keeping everyone safe. Their position is one of honor and justice. Many of the citizens they protect can be found working in Mayor Kringle’s prestigious companies, such as the Gift Packaging Plant or the Candy Mills.

Every year just before the Big Flight, the Frost monarchy hosts the Silver Bells Christmas Ball, a truly dazzling sight to behold. You’ll find sweeping waltzes, ball gowns of the finest silk, chandeliers that sparkle like diamonds, and champagne served frosty thanks to a certain prince.

North Pole City is home to thousands of Christmas elves, but you’ll find a few other magical inhabitants as well. I loved putting my own little twist on some festive favorites. Creating this magical world was so much fun, and on top of that, I get to throw these elves into whirlwind adventures as they find their way to love.

North Pole City Tales: Book 4

Genre: Gay Fantasy Romance, Holiday
Length: Novella
Published: Dec, 2015
Publisher: Dreamspinner Press
ISBN: 9781623809492

From North Pole City to Winter Wonderland, preparations are underway after a royal announcement sweeps everyone into a frenzy of festivity. At the heart of the celebration are the city’s most beloved elf pilots, the Rein Dears. Once the Big Flight is behind them, the pilots prepare for the royal event. Assigned a special task of finding an Elska rose, Cupid and Blitzen are unaware of how their friendship is about to change forever.

Yet not all that glitters is gold. The sweet, angelic Cupid hides a dark secret, one that threatens to destroy his Rein Dear status, his friends, and the elf who’s captured his heart. It’s up to Blitzen to help Cupid see the light in the darkness and show him that together they can mend broken hearts.

Loving Blitz can be read on its own, but for maximum enjoyment, it’s recommended the series be read in order as characters from previous books make appearances and previous events are mentioned.

Review: I guess I have to quit pouting about having to wait another whole year for the next book, and get this review written…*grumble* Heh, heh.  I really AM pouting about having to wait for next year’s book – this series is neverending, right? – but, I’m happy to write the review for this charming story!

Loving Blitz, this year’s addition to the North Pole City Tales series by Charlie Cochet, opens at the Silver Bells Christmas Ball – held this time at the King of Frost’s palace – where Jack Frost and Rudy share some exciting news. I was immediately mesmerized, as I always am in this series, by the descriptions and the language in the book. The places, the creatures, the events, the magic and history: Cochet has created a world here that is so vibrant and so delightful, I can’t wait to immerse myself in it every year.

Best friends for centuries, Cupid and Blitzen are perfect for each other. They have always been close, but when they dance together at the ball, they both begin to having stirrings of feelings that are more than friendly. I really did love this pairing; the romance felt effortless, and had the perfect amount of heat. And, speaking of pairings…I have my guesses as to next year’s potential couple, and can’t wait to find out who it will be!

The drama is relatively low in this one as compared to the other books in the series, but the story still has plenty of substance. The angle with Cupid’s secret is very intriguing and well done, and I loved the subplots here also. Dasher provides some tension and comic relief – just what is he up to with the King of Frost??? – which was fantastic, and it looks like one of Cupid’s brothers will be back in the future as well!

Ok. That’s three mentions of next year’s book. I think I’ve established that I loved this installment, and that I can’t wait for MORE. My work here is done. Go forth and enjoy Loving Blitz!!! It’s a Christmas reading list must.

The two of them stood to one side of the ballroom, sipping their drinks and watching the crowd as they danced or chatted. To think another year was almost gone. In a few days it would be time for the Big Flight. Cupid could barely contain his excitement. It was his favorite time of year.

All at once the guests around them broke off into applause. Cupid’s drink frosted over and he smiled brightly. Rudy and Jack had arrived.

“Fashionably late as usual, I see,” Blitz muttered. He turned his glass upside down and cursed under his breath. His champagne was frozen solid. “For the love of holly. Jack and his blasted games. I thought he’d outgrown them by now.” He placed his frozen drink on a nearby silver drink cart.

“I thought so too. I’m glad to see he hasn’t. It’s obviously Rudy’s influence.” It saddened Cupid to know Jack had lost himself for so long. He’d always been a playful and mischievous winter spirit. After the queen’s death, Winter Wonderland lost its heart to the ice, much like its prince. Thanks to Rudy and his love for Jack, the Prince of Frost was becoming the winter spirit he’d once been. “I’ve never seen him so happy.”

“You’re right,” Blitz conceded. “He doesn’t seem as grumpy. Sometimes. On leap year.”

Cupid laughed and teasingly nudged Blitz with his elbow. “Admit it, you think they’re adorable together.”

Blitz huffed and folded his arms over his chest. “I’ll admit to no such thing. Adorable is not a word I would ever associate with Jack Frost. I can think of a few choice words, but I assure you none are remotely close to adorable.”

Despite Blitz’s cranky demeanor, Cupid could see the humor in his gray eyes. The orchestra broke off into a cheerful melody Cupid instantly recognized. Oh! It was his favorite dance. He swiftly handed his glass to a passing waiter and grabbed Blitz’s wrist. “Dance with me.”

Blitz looked uncertain. “But this dance is for sweethearts.”

“Well, we’re best friends. That’s kind of like a couple.”

“I, uh….” Blitz’s uncertainty melted into a warm smile. “Okay.”

They headed to the circle of sweethearts forming in the center of the dance floor, among them Jack and Rudy, and Lieutenant Vale and Vixen, who’d emerged from out of the snowy blue. Those two were like a couple of snow bunnies, always scurrying off to do who knew what together. Cupid hadn’t seen them since they arrived together over an hour ago. Vixen seemed to draw out the more mischievous side of the bashful lieutenant while the lieutenant had the oddest calming effect on Vixen.

Blitz was right, this dance was for sweethearts, but it was so much fun. Besides, there was no one he wanted to dance it with other than Blitz. It was an odd sentiment to have toward his friend, but he enjoyed dancing with Blitz too much to care or give it any more thought. And seeing as how Blitz was currently without a beau, there was no reason for them not to dance together.

Everyone held hands and they danced in a loop. They stopped so Vixen could break from the group and take Cupid’s hand. The two of them danced in a circle before parting. Vixen took Vale’s hand while Cupid took Blitz’s. They whirled, then switched partners again.

Jack was in especially good spirits, twirling Rudy at the end of his turn and making Rudy laugh before they switched partners. The circle continued, this time with small lifts instead of taking hands. Cupid couldn’t help his giggle when Blitz took hold of his waist and lifted him off his feet. The lifts were really meant to be hops, but Blitz could lift Cupid without the least bit of effort. The pairs broke off into a scandalous version of a waltz where they were all but pressed up against each other. As always Cupid was forced to look up to meet Blitz’s eyes.

“I can see why you enjoy this. It’s fun and very sweet.” Blitz’s hand pressed ever so subtly against Cupid’s lower back when they turned, and the strangest tingle went up Cupid’s spine. That was… unusual.

“Are you all right?” Blitz asked so only Cupid could hear.

“Yes, of course. Why wouldn’t I be?” Cupid smiled. Was his face red? It felt a little hot.

“Your cheeks are flushed. More than usual. Are you tired? Would you like to stop?”

“I’m fine,” Cupid reassured him. He hated that he made Blitz worry. Maybe it was the champagne. He wasn’t very good at all the bubbly stuff. Two glasses was usually his limit. Though now that he thought about it, he’d only had one, and not even a full glass at that.

“All right. But you’ll tell me if you’re feeling unwell?”

“I promise.” Cupid gave Blitz’s arm a gentle squeeze in assurance.

“Good.”

They finished the waltz when Cupid noticed everyone moving on to the next part. Plum pudding! “I forgot about this part.” The very last dance included giving your sweetheart a kiss. That was all very well and good for the other elves in the circle, but…. Cupid turned to Blitz, who shrugged.

“It’s just a small kiss.” Blitz gave him a wink. “I’m sure I’ll survive.”

Cupid nodded. He wasn’t quite certain he would survive. This evening was taking a somewhat unexpected turn.

Review: Oh my! This is a delicious little nugget from Charlie Cochet that is full of surprises.

James Ralston is a former soldier and a former detective who is now in private security at a hotel in New York City that is long past its prime. The Pacific Blue no longer shines, but evidence of her former glory can still be glimpsed among the faded paint and moldings and furniture from days gone by. James patrols the hotel at night under the less than watchful eye of the manager – son of the original manager. Every night he stops in the radio room where the handsome but melancholy Franklin Fairchild listens to old music from the heyday of the Pacific Blue. James doesn’t want to offend the man, but he’s also worried that he’ll get drawn into something he doesn’t want to be if he engages with him.

Until the night that Franklin is NOT in the radio room. James gets worried and goes to look for Franklin – much against his better judgement. Once he finds Franklin, he discovers that he is more drawn to him than he ever thought. He also finds some things about Franklin quite disturbing – like the obvious abuse he has suffered at some point, which has left visible reminders. He tries to find out more about what he has uncovered of Franklin’s past, and why he’s resigned to his fate – only, he’s actually more confused by what is revealed. James is then convinced that he is losing his mind, and the more he tries to figure out what’s going on, the more baffled he becomes. He knows Franklin is the key, but he’s not sure how to resolve his questions.

I realize this review is a bit cryptic, but truly I can’t reveal any of the surprises, or it will ruin the story. Just suffice to say that nothing is what it seems and that there are reasons for what happens that are not at all apparent to James until the very end of the story.

Charlie Cochet adds some beautiful touches of old New York style and the beauty that once was the Pacific Blue, as well as her signature romantic style. Above all, this is a love story that will hopefully leave each reader with a little sad smile in the end.

BDPB Blog Tour Banner CCochet

Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me today at The Novel Approach to celebrate the release of Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue from Dreamspinner press! I’m very excited to be sharing this short novella with you. It has a little bit of everything, from sweet romance, humor, sexy-times, mystery, suspense, and a dash of horror. Between the Devil and the Pacific Blue may not be specifically a Halloween story, but it has several elements that makes Halloween a perfect release day!

I remember when Halloween was almost as exciting as Christmas. My mom was a seamstress and used to make my Halloween costumes, so the possibilities were endless. Pirate, princess, Care Bear, favorite cartoon character, you name it. One year I dressed up as a pumpkin. I have no idea what that was about or why, but there you go. Kids.

Then there was the promise of a plastic pumpkin full of chocolates, candies, and sometimes even quarters. Hey, a quarter could get you plenty of one penny sweets in the eighties. Remember Swedish Fish? I do. Used to love those things. Still do. I lived on a block filled with kids, so on Halloween a few of the parents would take a big group of us door to door. The parents would chat and gossip while we did our Trick-or-treating.

Once we had our pumpkins or bags full, we’d run back home and bask in our bounties, or head for the front steps of a friend’s house where the bartering would begin. Everyone would scour for the good candy, and pawn off their boring candy on their younger siblings who had no idea Ring Pops were way more awesome than a Werthers Original.

It was all about the good stuff. Fun Dip, Blow Pops, Melody Pops, Bonkers, Bubble Tape, and everyone wanted the Candy Cigarettes. It sounds kind of insane now when you think about. Candy Cigarettes for kids. But then when I was a kid, falling off the jungle gym most often resulted in serious bodily injury involving blood and possibly stitches. You were lucky if you hit sand or wood chips instead of concrete, and heaven help the poor soul who tried to go down the slide at noon in the middle of a hot summer day. Ah, the eighties.

What’s your fondest Halloween memory? Don’t celebrate Halloween, what’s your favorite holiday tradition?

Blurb: Magic takes many forms. From malignant hexes to love charms gone amok, you’ll find a vast array of spells and curses, creatures and conjurings in this massive collection—not to mention a steamy dose of man-on-man action. Charmed and Dangerous features all-new stories of gay paranormal romance, supernatural fiction and urban fantasy by ten top m/m paranormal authors.

Rhys Ford – Dim Sum Asylum
For Detective Roku MacCormick, working Arcane Crimes is his passion. Now cleared of any wrongdoing for shooting his last partner, MacCormick is given back his badge… as well as a new case and partner. Trent Leonard isn’t exactly what he’d expected, but then nothing in San Francisco’s Chinatown ever is.

Ginn Hale – Swift and the Black Dog
When Jack Swift killed a tyrant and won the revolution he became a national hero. But someone in the new government prefers dead heroes to living, swearing, cynical wizards. Caught between bullets, revenge and desire, Jack had better be swift indeed.

KJ Charles – A Queer Trade
Apprentice magician Crispin Tredarloe returns to London to find his master dead, and his papers sold. Papers with secrets that could spell death. Waste paper seller Ned Hall can’t resist Crispin’s pleading—and appealing—looks. But can the wasteman and the magician prevent a disaster and save Crispin’s skin?

Nicole Kimberling – Magically Delicious
Occult attacks against NIAD agents aren’t remotely Keith Curry’s department. But when his lover, Gunther, is assaulted, Keith refuses to just sit back and fill out paperwork. He’s on the case—even if that means enraging powerful mages, crossing leprechaun picket lines, or braving dinner with Gunther’s goblin parents.

Jordan Castillo Price – Everyone’s Afraid of Clowns
Psychic medium Victor Bayne can spot a ghost any day of the year, but Halloween holds some special surprises. His psych-groupie boyfriend Jacob coaxes him to the location of an old spirit sighting, but they can’t ghosthunt without enduring a cheesy “haunted house” that’s even more disturbing than they realize.

Jordan L. Hawk – The Thirteenth Hex
Hexman Dominic Kopecky doesn’t understand why dashing crow familiar Rook wants his help investigating murder by patent hex. For one thing, Dominic isn’t a witch. For another, the case is already closed—and someone is willing to kill to keep it that way.

Charlie Cochet – The Soldati Prince
Riley Murrough goes from serving lattes to being chased by demons. If that wasn’t bad enough, he bears the mark of a shapeshifter king from a magical realm. Riley’s determined to get answers, but if the demons out for his blood don’t kill him, the urge to strangle the arrogant king might.

Lou Harper – One Hex Too Many
Veteran detective Mike Mulligan is an expert on violent crimes—of the occult variety. He might even be cursed. Detective Hugh Fox is eager to partner up and prove himself, but Mulligan is accustomed to flying solo. Can they trust each other enough to track a killer who’ll stop at nothing, not even summoning a demon?

Andrea Speed – Josh of the Damned vs. the Bathroom of Doom
It’s a boring night at the Quik-Mart for Josh and his friend Doug. Until a vampire with a grudge—and the most adorable backup ever—crashes the store. Can Josh survive the Bathroom of Doom?

Astrid Amara – The Trouble With Hexes
P.I. Tim Keller has a problem. And the only person who can solve it is his ex-boyfriend, Vincent, whose job as a hexbreaker was the reason they broke up. It’s hard admitting he was wrong, especially when coughing up organs. But there’s a missing person to find, a hexmaker to hunt down, and a romance to repair before Tim breathes his last.

Review: If you’ve looked at this lineup of authors and thought to yourself that there’s no possible way this anthology could fail…you’d be absolutely right. For fans of speculative fiction, Charmed and Dangerous is a collection of wild wonderment that’s been long overdue. This company of ten of the genre’s consummate storytellers dug into their depthless cache of talent to ensure each of these tales lived up to the challenge presented to them: to create new worlds, to introduce both new and familiar characters within the allotted word count, and to do so without sacrificing a single iota of detail, imagination, or compromising the quality of each tale.

Mission: Accomplished

For me to give you a thorough rundown of every story in this omnibus would take more words than I’m positive you’re willing to read from me, so I’m not going to try. There are enough adjectives of a superlative nature in the English language that I can heap on this collection, and upon the heads of its authors, which could, and does, apply to every story in Charmed and Dangerous. Magical and mysterious, clever and charming, witty and wonderful, each of these stories is filled with curses and hexes and creatures of the mythical and metaphysical sort, and, in turn, the authors have given their characters the outlet to explore each of their worlds: where the impossible is made reality, where these men form a bond against a backdrop of danger, action, suspense, humor, dark and deadly magicks, and are given second chances at love.

Nine of these ten tales share a more common thread in their magic, while Charlie Cochet’s The Soldati Prince (what I feel is the most romance-centric of the collection) is a heartfelt and touching shifter fantasy that adheres to the mate bond theme inherent to that sub-genre. A theme it does share with several other of the stories, however, is sacrifice in the name of love. And may have made me a little teary eyed before its end.

From Rhys Ford’s mayhem-laden, humorous and action packed turn at a sex-cursed statue in an Alt U San Francisco Chinatown (which could have come only from the delectably madcap and marvelous mind of this author); to the post-revolutionary dystopian brilliance that is the genius Ginn Hale’s story of betrayal and salvation, Jack Swift and the Black Dog; to the always marvelous KJ Charles’ foray into hex magic and treachery and the promise of a new love (plus, that first line hooked me!); to the hyper-imaginative Nicole Kimberling’s extra-appropriately titled Magically Delicious, and its Lewis Carroll/Midsummer Night’s Dream world filled with leprechauns, mermaid-flesh dealers, goblins, and a deadly pixie dust mystery; to the extraordinarily talented Jordan Castillo Price and my beloved Victor Bayne and Jacob Marks, and a ghost clown all wrapped up inside a misogynist meninist’s wet dream; to the eloquent and fabulous Jordan L. Hawk’s perfect The Thirteenth Hex, a story for which I’m already begging a sequel because these characters and this world are oozing with everything that makes reading a magic unto itself; to the flawless Lou Harper’s unparalleled and all-consuming mystery One Hex too Many–the story that kept me on the hook from start to finish in not only its imaginative world building but in my love of its detectives Mulligan, Fox and Leslie; to the never to be outdone Andrea Speed’s oddball-in-only-the-best-way, strange-things-are-afoot-at-the-Quik-Mart, Josh of the Damned world where anything goes, from vamps to werewolves to zombies to human-sized lizards to giant animate mustaches…well, you get the picture; to the excellent The Trouble With Hexes, Astrid Amara’s beautiful close to the anthology, a story that’s dark magic and pure emotion and encompasses what it means to make the ultimate sacrifice for the one you love—these stories, each and every one of them, deliver a reading experience that’s meant to be devoured and savored all at once.

Whether you’ve only read one of these authors before, or, like me, you’ve read all ten, Charmed and Dangerous is a spec fic lover’s Wonderland… Or whatever it is you call that place we go during those not-quite-aware-of-reality moments when we lose ourselves in a great book.

Charmed and Dangerous

A lot of us feel like we’re the left side of weird.

To be honest, many of us are and there we find ourselves, one another actually, standing on the left side of weird and thinking; you know this would be a good place to set up camp.

That’s kind of what it feels like to be a writer amongst writers. And sometimes, if you’re very lucky, you get invited to some really cool places to camp and some fantastic people to share a fire with. Marshmallows! S’Mores! Crazy insects out for your blood! But still, a universe of stars not only above you but around you.

When Jordan Castillo Price asked if I’d be in an anthology she was heading up, I said sure, mostly because I figured if JCP wants something, you give it to her. Kinda like a genre Wookie. Not because she’s gonna rip your arm off but mostly because let’s face it, Wookies are kind of cool.

She did NOT tell me who else was going to be on the docket. And I will admit—and have often admitted—that when she put out the list, I took a mental paper bag and huffed into it a few times because damn the line up. Shit hell, what have I gotten myself into? Said my little brain. Because one does not simply walk into this anthology and not have a really damned nice ring to toss into the lava.

Charmed and Dangerous was born. A vast land of possibilities and oh-my-god moments just waiting to happen. And we were off.

I’ve read all the other authors. And marveled at them. And fretted. Really, so much of writing is fretting.

Look at this lineup and say, sure… no worries, I can hang.

Astrid Amara, KJ Charles, Charlie Cochet, Ginn Hale, Lou Harper, Jordan L. Hawk, Nicole Kimberling, Jordan Castillo Price, Andrea Speed

Hah. I fret.

Then well, deadlines looming, I began to write. So did the others. Suffice it to say we all kind of blew past our 8,000 word mark. When it was all said and done, the anthology sat at over 100,000 words and oh the stories… damn the stories.

See, usually writing is a loner sport. Kind of like cross-country running. I think. I wouldn’t know. I grew up in a place where there wasn’t a lot of cross-country anything. You quickly run out of island after a bit. But still, writing…loner sport. It is. Even if you’re writing with someone, you’re kind of struggling to form words and ideas out of nothing and then passing that on for other people to see, hoping that you’ve hit the mark.

Guess it’s more like archery than running. But definitely as exhausting as running.

When we got the ARCs to look over our stories, I had the chance to read through the anthology as a whole and was humbled by the mastery of word and story from the other authors. Everyone talks about bringing an A-game to an anthology and in this case, it was more of everyone delivering proto-lingual skills because I truly believe this is one of the most innovative, fantastically crafted anthologies I’ve ever had a chance to read.

I am still shocked to be a part of it.

And very thankful.

Mostly thankful. So with much gratitude to Jordan Castillo Price, I extend my heartfelt thanks for including me. It was great to write a story and be included in Charmed and Dangerous. We were all given room to stretch our weirdness and found we could fly. So thank you for that too.

Charmed and Dangerous drops on Aug 25, 2015. I hope you grab it because I think it’s a buffet of tasty tasty words cooked up into the most delicious of dishes. Served up, of course, just on the left side of weird.

charmed-cover-200Ten Tales of Gay Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy

Take a cauldron full of magic, add a pinch of humor, a dash of snark and a huge dollop of m/m goodness, and what do you get? Charmed and Dangerous: Ten Tales of Gay Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy. This all-new collection is packed with arcane action and intrigue, and every story will whisk you away to a fantastical world where the hero finds his prince and the paranormal investigator always gets his man.

Magic takes many forms.

1DimSum_tease

Ginn Hale – Swift and the Black Dog
When Jack Swift killed a tyrant and won the revolution he became a national hero. But someone in the new government prefers dead heroes to living, swearing, cynical wizards. Caught between bullets, revenge and desire, Jack had better be swift indeed.

2SwiftTease

3PsycopTease

Review:  Oh my…I love Charlie Cochet.  I have an extreme love for grumpy, growly characters who soften and are sweet to the one that they love, and I think Charlie Cochet is a master at writing them.  And, alright, I also have a soft spot for sweet, geeky guys too…and in this book I got both.

The way humor is weaved throughout the story is awesome. When Quinn walks into Spencer’s apartment the first time, the entire encounter had me laughing out loud. Then later, when Quinn’s family showed up, I again couldn’t help but laugh because honestly, Quinn’s family was amazing.

This brings me to another thing I have loved about all of the Charlie Cochet books I have read—the secondary characters.  Although the story is definitely about Quinn and Spencer, you can’t help but love those characters around them…well, most of them, but even those characters you don’t like (I wouldn’t have minded slapping Javier upside his head) are fleshed out, and you are able to connect with them all, adding another layer to the story.

Although this story is short and sweet and I would have loved more, because I am greedy and loved the characters that much, the story is fantastic and is a perfect example of why Charlie Cochet is an auto-buy author for me.

Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me as I celebrate the release of Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts, my sweet little contemporary romance! Here to give you a few dating tips is Spencer Morgan, brownie baker extraordinaire. Take it away Spencer!

***

Hello! I’m Spencer Morgan, but my friends call me Spence. I’m not really here to give you dating tips because, well, the last time I successfully dated a guy, pagers were all the rage. So yeah. However, I can use my recent experience with a certain gruff, Cuban SWAT officer to offer a few Do’s and Don’ts.

Do: always have tasty food on hand because toast is the only thing he can cook, and even then you run the risk of ending up with pieces of flat coal and a call to the fire department.

Don’t: assume that because he can drink Cuban coffee five times a day without turning radioactive that the same skills apply to you. The smell is enough to get you wired for the rest of the day.

Do: be aware he will always walk in on you during the most awkward and unexpected situations. It’s like radar.

Don’t: forget to put on pants when baking. See my previous comment on his talent for awkward timing.

Do: remember that his mom can be telepathically summoned. The mere thought or mention of her is enough to get her to call or visit.

Don’t: ignore a phone call from his mother. Not unless you want an army-sized family or actual army officers sent out to find you and rescue you from whatever catastrophe has befallen you as that is the only acceptable reason for having ignored her call.

Do: remember not to eat any breakfast or lunch when his parents are bringing dinner as you’ll be consuming large quantities of delicious food and then given more food once you’ve cleared your plate. You will also have enough leftovers for the week, so make sure you leave room in your fridge.

Don’t: have more than one slice of Tres Leches for dessert unless you’re looking to become diabetic. If you’re already diabetic, walk away slowly. The sight alone may be enough to cause harm. Unless you’re his mom and then somehow your diabetes is afraid of you and one slice is fine.

Do: give him lots of kisses and cuddles, even when he’s being a grump. Especially when he’s being a grump because chances are he’s trying to tell you he’d like you to lavish affection on him, which is pretty much the majority of the time. :)

Don’t: assume that because you don’t see him that he can’t see you. He loves appearing out of nowhere, scaring the life out of you, and pretending he was there the whole time. It is however worth the scare when you pout and he makes it all better.

So there you have it. These should help you on your road to romance. Maybe. Keep in mind that I kind of suck at directions and have a habit of getting lost, so you might want a map or GPS. Okay, this analogy’s getting away from me. Thanks for joining me!

Hello all! Thank you so much for joining me as I celebrate the release of the fifth book in the THIRDS series, Against the Grain. Today I’m going to chat a little bit about Therians across the globe.

As some of you may know, Therians were born from the use of chemical warfare during the Vietnam War. A virus was released and when unsuspecting troops returned home all across the globe, the infection spread. Using strains of animals immune to the virus, scientists created a vaccine, unaware of the dormant mutation within the virus. This mutation gave birth to Therians. Although hundreds of thousands died, those who survived passed their mutation onto their children. In 1976 the mutation perfected itself, resulting in First Generation Therians. Sloane and Ash are both First Gens.

Any Therian born before First Gens are known as Pre First Gens, and they have many health issues varying in severity caused by the mutation. Seb and Rafe are Pre First Gens, both born tiger Therians due to their father having fought in Vietnam and becoming infected, becoming a tiger Therian.

When the virus broke out, it spread across the globe. Wherever there are people, there are Therians. When the United States created Therian Legislation and the Therian branch of government, many other countries did the same. The Therian Human Intelligence Recon Defense Squadron first opened its doors on US soil, but as a separate military funded organization, soon the THIRDS began to branch out across the world. Every country has its own THIRDS organization. The number of branches depends on how big the country is and the Therian population.

Whatever country you live in, there’s a THIRDS organization, some very prominent. London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Mumbai, Osaka, Mexico City, Seoul, Cairo, Moscow, Mila, Taipei, Beijing—just to name a few—hold their country’s THIRDS HQ. Although each country runs their THIRDS differently, their goal is a common one: justice and equality for Humans and Therians.

Unfortunately, there are parts of the world where the THIRDS is non-existent, as Therians have limited rights. Not all countries have embraced their Therian citizens, refusing to allow Therians to be considered equals. The laws are far stricter and in some cases just being a Therian in that country is dangerous. In the United States, Therians are marked. Next to this tattoo on their necks, the only physical feature that makes them recognizable as Therians are their eyes. When the light hits them in the right way, their eyes reflect the light, making it look as if their eyes are glowing, just like the eyes of animals, allowing them to see in the dark. In some parts of the world, they use light as a way to identify Therians, arresting them for breaking laws which would not apply to Humans.

Since Therians have only been around forty-odd years, the Humanity is still coming to grips with no longer being the dominant species. The world has a long way to go, but it’s moving in the right direction.

Review:  So, a little less than a year ago, I ordered a book from Dreamspinner Press because it was being offered for free. I didn’t really read the blurb or any reviews, I hadn’t heard of the author or the series, but it was free and my budget was tight so I thought, well, I give it a shot.  That book was Hell & High Water, and I fell in love.

Although the first books all revolved mostly around Dex and Sloane, they really showcase the entire team, and this book is Ash and Cael’s story.  We get a little more background on things that have made these two who they are, and I don’t think their story could have been done any better than it was.  Even though there was a change in the MC in this book, it still focuses on the team, so you still get snippets of all of the guys and girls we love. I liked getting a look at the team from a different perspective and to get to see a how Ash and Cael view the crazy going on around them. I seriously want a friend like Dex.

As a couple, Ash and Cael are so sweet. They seem to bring out the best in each other. They make each other see themselves as the other sees them: strong, sweet, fierce, protective and loved.

I have loved every book and audio in this series so far, and absolutely can’t wait for more of the THIRDS.  I can only imagine how awesome Calvin and Hobbs story is going to be!

It’s a boring night at the Quik-Stop for Josh and his friend Doug.

TEASERS:

We were just kids,” Jack muttered.

Shafts of afternoon light speared through the blinds, illuminating the hard angles of his lean face. He exhaled a cloud of pale blue smoke and ignored the glare of the well-dressed diners seated at other tables. In a moment a maitre’d would appear and smoothly suggest that he remove himself from the building.

Then, inevitably, David would intervene, flashing his ministry badge and pronouncing Jack’s full name a little too loudly, a little too officiously. A halting apology would be offered and followed by requests for autographs and photos. Behind it all Jack would hear the whispers.

That’s Jack Swift?

God, did you see his hand?

He looks like some ragman from the Bone Ledges.

I’ve heard he’s a queer.

Lifting his scarred hand, Jack drew the smoke down to ring his fingers. Let the surrounding diners see that the ragman in their midst was a wizard. They didn’t need to know which one. Any wizard was too much trouble for most decent folk.

From his square jaw and beefy build down to his dirty blond fade haircut, everything about the guy screamed ex-hardcore military. He moved as if expecting a riot to break out on the upper loft, icy blue eyes scanning each of us, stopping only long enough to mark our presence before moving on to the next cop.

He found me first and then again, last. His gaze pierced through me, assessing and judging in a way that did not say cop. I wasn’t sure what was found wanting, my shaggy mane or my odd ommatidia-faceted pupils, but something made his nostrils flare. I definitely spotted the moment he saw my pupils’ copper-green sheen. His head jerked back a few millimeters and his chin jutted out.

If my new partner had a thing against fae or fae-bred, we were assuredly going to have a problem.

“Mr. Kopecky?”

“Yes, that’s….” Dominic began as he lifted his gaze from the paper. Then his tongue tangled, and he forgot how to speak.

The man standing in front of his desk was…well, he’d never thought of a man as beautiful before, but it was the only word that came to mind now. The white of his shirt collar contrasted with rich, brown skin. Silky black locks brushed his shoulders, and wide lips shaped into a rather cheeky grin.

“…You?” the man prompted, when Dominic only stared.

God! He dropped his eyes quickly, willing his reaction under control. He couldn’t forget himself at work, in full view of everyone. As he glanced down, his eye snagged on the badge pinned to the man’s vest.

A familiar? Here?

Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Dex refuses to stand by while another team goes after Hogan, and decides to put his old HPF detective skills to work to find Hogan before Theta Destructive, no matter the cost.

Sloane is all too familiar with the desire to retaliate, but some things are more important, like the man who’s pledged to stand beside him. As Dex starts down a dark path, it’s up to Sloane to show him what’s at stake, and finally put a name to what’s in his heart.

Review: MORE!!! That is all I have to say. These THIRDS books have made me a fangirl. I can’t help myself. I drive down the road listening to these books, and people look at me funny because I am tearing up I am laughing so hard. I have to say that Dex is one of my favorite fictional characters. The whole support crew makes me smile. This series is so well written, and when this book was over, I was sad. I wanted to listen to them all over again, so I, in fact, listened to this audio again as soon as it was done. You can’t ask for more in these books. You get comedy, true love, action sequences, 80s music and hot man sex. SIGN ME UP!

Narration: In my eyes, Mark Westfield can do no wrong. He is freaking brilliant. I read the first few books of this series…but after listening to them on audio, I will never go to the written word again. He takes these characters and brings them to life. He uses sound effects and his own particular style. Although he reads all the characters, I feel that Mark is Dex. Perfection…simply perfection.

Blurb: As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Excerpt: “You should have seen him,” Dex said with a laugh. “He looked so adorable with his cheetah fuzz shaped into spikes, from his head down to his back. Like a little spotted punk rocker.”

Maddock shook his head at Dex. “It took me two hours to wash all the hair spray off your brother’s fur.”

“We were pretending to be Guns N’ Roses,” Cael explained. “Dex was singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and I was backup sing—er, chirping.”

Ash laughed and playfully bumped Cael’s shoulder. “I’m going to have to agree with Dex. That’s adorable.” Even in his Therian form, Ash thought Cael was the sweetest thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Cael could be in his Therian form among thousands of cheetahs, and Ash would be able to point him out. His little gestures, the heart shape of his nose, or the way he chirped away, as if anyone not in their Therian form might understand him if he tried hard enough.

Dex grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Tell me you recorded that. Doesn’t matter. I have witnesses.” Dex stood and motioned to all of them. “Witnesses! You all heard it. Ash said he agrees with me.”

“Oh, good Lord. We’re never going to hear the end of this,” Maddock sighed, getting up to clear the dishes.

“Do you realize how epic this moment is?” Dex said, helping clear up.

“It’s not really that epic,” Maddock replied.

Dex let out an exaggerated gasp. “Where have you been living? Ash Keeler has agreed with something I, Dexter J. Daley, has said.”

“About your brother being adorable. Not exactly earthshattering. He’s thought that since they met.”

The table fell into silence as they all gaped at Maddock. Well, this was news to Ash. What the hell? Seeming to notice the quiet, or more likely the lack of Dex talking, Maddock looked up.

“What are you, fish? Close your mouths.”

A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week

Here’s a Sneak Peek at the Coming Week

Love Wins

Friday, June 26th, was a landmark day here in the US, a victory for what should simply be an inalienable human right rather than a legal judgment, the right to love and equality, but a victory nonetheless, and though I’m certain the opposition will still have plenty to bemoan and bewail about as we move forward, for now, we at TNA celebrate this single victory with our friends and family in the LGBT community.

#LoveWins

And now, here’s what we have coming up for you in the week ahead.

Guest Post and Giveaway: The Healing Hunter’s Heart Blog Tour With Charlie Cochet

HHH Blog Tour Header

Hello all! Thank you for joining me on another stop of the tour celebrating the release of Healing Hunter’s Heart.

The Little Bite of Love series centers on the shifters of St. Veles. The Provence of St. Veles is a heavily wooded land mass located between Maine and Nova Scotia. It was revealed centuries ago when the veil between the human world and magical world crumbled. St. Veles is mostly occupied by canine shifters.

Unlike my THIRDS series, the shifters in Little Bite of Love were born of myth and magic. Although they live very human lives, they are also very deeply connected to the ways of their ancestors. In this world, there is what’s known at the World Law which governs all. The World Law encompasses many human laws to keep order among all creatures. But each clan has its own laws. These laws can be brutal, but they must be respected by all creatures and humans.

In Healing Hunter’s Heart, we get to see how the canine shifter clans live. We get to see the very human side. They have jobs they go to, school, shopping, gardening, barbecues. Then there are instances where we’re reminded who these shifters really are and the kind of world they live in.

Justice – For example, Hunter is entitled to retribution against Skyrah for her dishonorable actions against him and his mate. He can choose one of three options: exile, servitude, or death. If he’d still been part of the Hagan Clan during her betrayal, the Hagan Council would have enforced the punishment. However since Hunter had abdicated his position before then, her punishment is up to him. Of course since the Hagan Clan is on the verge of war with Hunter’s Clan, his retribution has to wait as the Hagan Clan has no intention of cooperating.

Priorities – In a canine shifter clan, nothing is more important than the clan’s pups. They are the future of a canine shifter clan. This means when war breaks out between clans, those with no honor will go for the pups. Destroy them, and the clan will not survive. Clan members who’ve lost their pups will disband to join other clans. Their ancestry, their families, their name is destroyed. This is why clans have Enforcers. Fierce defenders to challenge and eliminate any threat to the clan and any possible danger posed to their pups. Canine shifters need family, whether they’re related by blood or bond. They very much have a pack mentality.

HuskyShiftersMates and Bonding – Mates in the canine shifter clans of St. Veles are also complex. The type of mate a canine shifter has along with who is the stronger of the two will result in certain changes once the bond is complete. Canine shifters can have sex without bonding, though if they find the rate mate, the call of their ancestors will grow with time, demanding the shifter seal the bond. A bond requires commitment and a spiritual connection.

The stronger of the two shifters will have to pierce the skin of his mate where droplets of blood will travel down their fangs and into their mate. Enforcer blood will always cause changes in a pureblood when bonded, giving the pureblood an Enforcer’s strength among other changes. For this reason, the Hagan Clan had outlawed Enforcer/Pureblood bonding, using false reasoning in order to hide the truth. This would ensure no pairing could grow strong enough to challenge the clan’s Alpha.

Types of Mates

True Mates: Are very rare. Trip and Boone are true mates. With true mates, depending on the pairing, a bond stronger than any other is forged. An Alpha/Enforcer bonding like in Trip and Boone’s case means the Alpha canine shifter takes on all of the Enforcer’s strengths. There are physical changes. It prepares the Alpha for any and all who may challenge him.

Compatible Mates: A canine shifter can have more than one compatible mate from which to choose from. They can be in a relationship and have sex. There will be a strong connection and a bond can be made. Compatible mates aren’t rare, but they aren’t plentiful either. Some connections may feel stronger than others. Hunter and Ari are compatible mates. However, Ari’s scent had a far stronger pull on Hunter than any other compatible mate he’d come across, enough to draw out his canine shifter instincts.

Mates: Much like with humans, canine shifters can meet someone, enter a relationship, and fall in love. Whoever that is will become a mate and they can bond. Their bond is no less deep or strong than the other types of mates, but there will be no changes in either party after the bond.

For all shifters who bond, there will be a small change. Such as the ability to communicate telepathically no matter the form they’re in with each other. With Compatible mates and true mates, the changes are greater, and they vary depending on the pairing.

One thing’s for sure, being a canine shifter is tough. There’s always danger lurking in the woods, whether from the wilder canine shifter clans, from those looking to expand their clan, looking to take over someone else’s, looking to pilfer mates, or just cause problems. For the most part, the canine shifters of St. Veles just want to live out a peaceful existence, and their Enforcers are there to ensure that happens. So who are these Enforcers? Find out on the next stop!

Review: Another disclosure: I am a big Charlie Cochet fan (she is an auto-buy for me) – both her historicals and her latest THIRDS series are favorites. Now I can add this series to the list as well. Warning: It is not recommended that this series be read out of sequence, as the setup for this story is a spoiler from the first book.

Oh man! This was quite a ride, and very different in many ways from the first book in this series, An Intrepid Trip to Love (from the M/M Goodreads group free Love Has No Boundaries event in 2013). I am embarrassed to say that I JUST read the first story in March of this year, in anticipation of the release of this story. *hangs head in shame*

A lot of this particular chapter of the series takes place in the past – parallel to the story in the first book. Then we move to present day, where Trip and Boone have already bonded and left the Hagan clan and moved to a new town, with Trip becoming the Alpha of the Deagan clan. Things are going okay with the clan, but there is always the threat of possible trouble from their former clan. Hunter is making do, but a big part of his heart is missing after having to leave Ari with his mother and his old clan. He misses Ari something fierce, and he isn’t truly happy.

The first quarter of the story centers around how Ari and Hunter became a couple – from their first encounter to their separation at the hands of the Hagan clan Council, and particularly Ari’s mother. It’s an entertaining episode, and we get to learn a lot more about Ari and Hunter in the time that led up to the confrontation between Trip and his father that leads to the split. We also get the story from alternating perspectives, so we know how Ari and Hunter feel about their relationship and how they are faring when they are apart.

Besides the painful separation of Hunter and Ari, the other events of this book involve the looming fight with the Hagan clan. Trip has most of the younger generation and all of the pups in his clan, and this is causing a lot of consternation with Trip’s family he has left behind, including his father, Mattias, his mother, brother, and grandparents. Then there is crazy Skyrah, Ari’s mother and Trip’s former mother-in-law. She is a chief architect of the Council’s strategy regarding the Deagan clan. She and Matthias collude to make the Deagan clan pay.

As the story heads toward a climactic battle, alliances are drawn and new characters are introduced from other neighboring clans. There are also familiar characters such as Kristoff from the Trevyn clan, and the adorable Robbie, Trip’s son. We get some new clans and characters, the most compelling being Mischa, the Alpha of the Zolnervolk clan. The tension between Kristoff and Mischa was really fun to watch (and I hope we get a lot more of them in the future. Hint-hint, Charlie). As Trip builds his new alliances, the Hagan clan is plotting something more devious and ghastly than anyone can predict. This leads to a bloody and heartbreaking battle that will forever change the Hagan and Deagan clans.

My feelings reading this book were somewhat like being on a rollercoaster. The first bit is all about the fun of new love with the relationship of Ari and Hunter. Then there are a lot of rises and falls with the new characters/clans, and the nefarious plotting on the part of the Hagan clan. Then there is the heartbreak and the uplifting resolution. But I loved every moment of it. :) I really hope there will be more stories in the world, because they are a lot of fun to read.

Healing Hunter’s Heart is highly recommended to anyone who loves a good shifter story, overcoming odds, underdogs winning, or just plain good storytelling. Charlie Cochet has done it again!

But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

Review: All I can say is LOVE LOVE LOVE. If I could give this 10 stars, I would. Every single aspect of this audiobook held my attention and kept me coming back for more.

Charlie Cochet writes the perfect blend of comedy, angst, and action. From Dex’s demented sense of humor involving a coffee mug, to Maddock cutting Sloane’s hair, to the scene where Sloane and Dex’s relationship is revealed to a friend, Charlie keeps you laughing through really serious and scary situations. This team goes through a lot, but humor makes Rack & Ruin feel light. The author gives you closure to the case they are investigating within the book, but definitely keeps you anticipating the next book. Rack & Ruin has a devastating ending, with many open ended questions; however, this doesn’t make me angry or frustrating. Charlie Cochet tied enough of the story together to satisfy me, while the anticipation eats me up.

Narration: Before picking this audiobook for review, I had previously read it and loved it; however, the narrator, Mark Westfield, brought the THIRDS to life. Mark had me riveted; crying, I was laughing so hard, and then other times simply just crying.

Each character has a different voice and tone, and the action sequences were suspenseful and believable. I don’t know how Westfield does it, but he takes me back to the Radio Days of the past, when props and sound effect were used without seeming kitschy or overdone. He gives a master class narration. When I was done listening to this, I was sad because it was over. This audiobook and narrator are without a doubt the best I have listened to. Putting this incredible author and narrator together is a pairing made in heaven.
