I’d like to thank Lisa for lettin’ me join y’all today.

On September 29, 2013 I released my first full length novel, My Hero. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect the attention that this book got and is getting still. The reason I’m here is to tell you about the audiobook that was released last week.

Almost three years ago I had this idea of writing about football. It was the beginning of summer practice and the Olympics were on, so I kind of combined the two. Putting a young college football jock together with a diver was different enough to put a new twist on it I thought.

I did use a lot of personal stuff in this book. It is based where I grew up and with people I knew from way back when. Most of the characters in this book are based on real people. Some names are actually real as are many of the places mentioned, like Big Ed’s pizza. I still visit when I go back. I think that Johnny Milloway was my first real live crush.

This is my first foray into the audio world. I figured why not. It was interesting to say the least. I’m not very technical. To be honest, I’m a technological nightmare. I’m lucky to be able to turn a computer on, so doing this was a big challenge for me.

My adventure started last October when I decided to jump in with both feet. Little did I know… The process was… interesting.

The first thing I did was open the book up to auditions. That proved to be arduous at best. I swear, there were some auditions that made my ears bleed. There was one guy that sounded really good, but he backed out because he was also a sports announcer and was a little afraid someone might find out. I guess I can understand that.

It was then that a friend turned me onto Jared Bradford. Now I knew of him, but had no idea he had this wonderful voice. He did an audition and blew me away. The rest as they say is history. He brought my book to life.

There were times while listening to the proofs when I thought ‘Wow, I actually wrote that?’. I think it gave me an entirely new perspective on the book. It also got me more enthused about writing the sequel, which is now almost done.

I think what I brought away from this whole experience is that I got to hear these characters brought to life from someone else’s perspective. While they are the characters I had in my head, Jared gave a new freshness and vibrancy that I’d not seen before.

If you’ve read My Hero, I highly suggest you give the audiobook a listen. I think you may also come away from the story with a new viewpoint, which was the case with me. If you’ve not, then you can get both at a discounted rate on Amazon.

Happy reading (and listening).

Max Vos Audio CoverTitle: My Hero

Author: Max Vos

Run Time: 6 hours and 3 minutes

Narrator: Jared Bradford

Publisher: Max Vos, Inc.

Blurb: This is a gay male romance with explicit sexual situations between men.

When he was 16 years old, Rich Miller saved a young man from drowning at his local pool. Little did he know that years later, as a senior in college and Olympic diving hopeful, Rich would meet up once again with Johnny Milloway, now a big football player – and when Rich says big, he really means “bear”. The shy jock remembers his saviour, and the two men become friends.

Johnny isn’t put off by the fact that Rich is gay. In fact, the more time he spends with Rich, the more curious he becomes. Johnny wants to know all kinds of things – what it’s like to kiss a guy, for instance. Only it doesn’t stop there…

Rich finds it difficult to believe that this relationship can go anywhere. Johnny is straight, and Rich isn’t prepared to deal with the heartache he knows will come his way in the future. He has enough on his plate as it is – the worlds are just around the corner. His father would rather watch a football game than spend time watching his son dive. What he doesn’t count on is Johnny, who can be very determined. And having Johnny in his life proves to be a catalyst for some pretty earth-shattering changes.

Get A Real Job

How many people do you hear say they love their jobs?  I wish more were able to admit to that, and I do feel blessed I am able to say I love my job.  Some aspects of the writing process are a lot of fun.  When I’m in “writing mode” and the story is flowing freely through my fingertips, it doesn’t feel like work at all and that’s probably why many of my family and friends don’t look at what I do as a “real job”.  Sometimes I get angry at that, but I do understand why they might see it that way.  They hear about me taking trips to amazing cities for book signings, meeting other authors and the fans that thankfully follow us around to these events, and my family and friends wonder where I get off saying I’m working.  It could also be because when they do see me sitting at my desk writing I appear to be too happy to be at work.  That’s true.  I am very content when I’m writing.  Most often when I am sitting in front of my laptop creating, I am in my happy zone – my personal nirvana.  I have the music cranked loud in my office and I get to hang out (inside my head) with these amazing characters for long periods of time, making them do and say all sorts of incredible things.

Seriously, what’s not to like about that?

The elements most people never see of the “writing process” for an independently published author like myself, is the fact I typically work seven days a week and do erratic hourly schedules that include days, nights, and weekends, and the hours can run into the double digits on some days.  Staying on track with book release deadlines is where the work stress can come in to play.

Once you finish the first draft of the story there is usually several rounds of editing which need to be done.  This gives you a second, third, and sometimes a fourth draft to the story.  While the editing phase is going on you’re likely overseeing the creation of the cover artwork.  This involves selecting and approving the models for the cover or the stock photographs to be used, background material, fonts, colors, and so on.  This task can take several hours of input between the author and the graphic artist until the final cover art is approved by the author.  When you have an edited, final manuscript it then needs to be electronically formatted for submission to Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and the various other sales outlets, then all the files need to be submitted to the outlets.

There is also the marketing end of the business to deal with, which in my opinion is a second full-time job in itself, and the marketing is just as important as writing the book.  If you don’t market your book no one will see it, and if no one finds your book you won’t sell any copies.  It is a simple concept, but like every other detail to the process of releasing a book, it takes hours and hours of time.  Add to that the networking, answering emails, interviews, blog tours, giveaways or contests and then shipping out the books and merchandise for the winners and so on.  Next thing you know the hours involved in getting a book released have added up to astronomical numbers and the work is tedious.

Does that sound like a “real job” to you?

Having said all that, I still wouldn’t trade this job for any other on the planet.  It truly is a labor of love and I am honored to be able to create books that can entertain a reader.

~Ann Lister

KAGE-COVER-300x450 OfficialBlurb: ROUND 1 of the KAGE Trilogy

My name is Jamie Atwood, and I’m an addict. I never thought I’d say such a thing. Never had a problem being overly-attached to anything in my life. I came from a perfectly middle-class family, made good grades, and had a hot cheerleader girlfriend. But the truth is, nothing ever really moved me. So how did a guy like me become an addict?

I met Michael Kage.

Kage is an MMA fighter. A famous one. I like to think I helped him get that way.

He’s charming as hell, with looks to rival any movie star and talent to back it up. So why did he need to hire me as an intern Publicist? Simple. He has a darkness in him– like a black hole so deep it could swallow him, and me, and everyone we know– and that’s not good for business.

The first time I met him, I felt the pull. I think the addiction began at that very moment. And even if I’d known then what I know now, I would have fallen for him. How could I not?

For me, Kage is everything.

Excerpt: Mark clapped me on the back. “Hey, we’ll have to take you out after work on your birthday and buy you some drinks. It’s not every day a guy becomes legal in Sin City! Don’t plan anything for the night of the twenty-ninth. I’ll handle everything.”

Mark, who looked the part of the quintessential office stud, sounded altogether too excited about introducing me to the debauchery of Vegas. Like he would take great personal pleasure in escorting me through the gates of Hell. My mind conjured up an image of me snorting mounds of cocaine off of a roulette table as Mark Gladstone cackled maniacally, surrounded by mobsters, carnies, and hookers… and one really awkward-looking donkey.

“Sounds nice,” I told him, pushing the disturbing image out of my head.

“You’ll have to get in line, Mark,” said a voice from behind me— a voice smooth and deep like dark chocolate. It was surprising that I recognized the voice without turning around. Except for the noisy video on my phone, I hadn’t heard Michael Kage speak since the night we met. But now he sounded familiar, as if we’d only paused for a moment in conversation.

I whirled around, feeling the smile take over my face. He was dressed in running shorts and sneakers. Sweat had seeped through almost every inch of his t-shirt, causing it to cling to the curves of his muscles. Muscles that were only hinted at in the suit he’d worn the night of the event but were now on audacious display here in this professional setting. Somehow the incongruity of his style of dress and the locale made it almost obscene— like a shirtless guy in a restaurant.

Kage ran a hand through his unruly dark hair, pushing sweaty tendrils away from his face. A few strands still clung to his temples. “I think it’s only right that I should be the one to take Jamie out on his birthday, since he belongs to me.” Both Cathy and Mark seemed to do subtle double-takes at his comment. “I hired him as my publicist, so he’s working for me.”

“Ahhh…” Cathy breathed. “That explains it. We were trying to figure out where the little whippersnapper belonged. Now we know.” She glanced pointedly at Mark. “You got here just in the nick of time. I’m afraid Mr. Gladstone was about to change his sexual affiliation just so he could pull a Bill Clinton.”

“Uh-huh.” Kage narrowed his eyes at Mark. “Get your own intern. This one’s mine.”

Maris BlackAbout the Author: My name is Maris Black (sort of), and I’m a Southern Girl through and through.

In college, I majored in English and discovered the joys of creative writing and literary interpretation. After honing my skills discovering hidden meanings authors probably never intended, I collected my near-worthless English degree and got a job at a newspaper making minimum wage. But I soon had to admit that small town reporting was not going to pay the bills, so I went back to school and joined the medical field. Logical progression, right? But no matter what I did, my school notebooks and journals would not stop filling up with fiction. I was constantly plotting, constantly jotting prose, constantly casting the people I met as characters in the secret novels in my head.

Yep. I can blame my creative mother for that one!

When I finally started writing fiction for a living, I surprised myself with my choice of genre. I’d always known I wanted to write romance, but the first story that popped out was about a couple of guys finding love during a threesome with a woman. Then I wrote about more guys, and more guys, and more guys. I was never a reader of gay fiction, and I’d never planned to write it. The only excuse I have for myself is: Hey, it’s just what comes out!

Guest Post and Giveaway: The Fourth and Long Blog Tour With Michele Michael Rakes

fourth and long official banner

Welcome to Michele Michael Rakes today on the Fourth and Long blog tour. Michele chats a bit about the book, how it came to be, and is also giving readers the chance to win some great prizes, including an e-book set of Saving Kane and Fourth and Long to two winners, or a $15 Gift Card grand prize.

Good luck!

How Fourth and Long came to be…

Football is about passion, teamwork, and athleticism. The game is adrenaline inducing and rooting for your team is a year round experience. These athletes are the new gladiators. Football players epitomize the ultra-masculine ideal. Yet, there is always controversy. Trades abound. Players shake up the game with powerful personalities. There is sex appeal. Hard bodies. Just check out the football players in the yearly body issue of Sports Illustrated.

To this fan, their skills are sexy, and even a little homoerotic. All that slap ass gets me going as much as a phenomenal play and sends this writer of gay erotic romance to the laptop Tuesday through Friday. Saturday through Monday, from September to December is all about football. The excitement continues through February and brings my family together for exciting Sundays with good food and a lot of shouting. For me, the season begins with draft day, which I’ve taken off this year so I can watch with family and friends.

Football is a game of strategy. A game that inspires a competitive nature. A game I love and wanted to share with readers. The game provided an interesting backdrop to the story inside my nugget. There were technical issues. My desire to bring football to people who don’t normally watch it was one of the elements I had to contend with and keep the story readable enough for the nonfans. Yet, it needed to be football enough for those that love the game to feel like they are seeing behind the curtain. A glimpse inside the pro-locker room and the lives of our favorite gladiators.

Inspired by the guys who could out smart their opponents, I wanted to bring the players who could catch a ball in double and triple coverage to life on the page. I wanted the readers to connect with the menbeneath the pads. To look beyond the grill of the helmet to see the man behind the visor and understand what drives him.

The need to compete.

The love of the game.

This then made me wonder how to make competitive men fall in love. Would they battle on and off the field? What if I made them start out on opposing teams? One team the best in the league. The other a lowly expansion team only two years out and falling on hard times. Conflict? Yes. Trash talk? Absolutely! Oh, and lots of testosterone. Injuries and intrigue. Nothing says hot, like two football players slamming their chests together, slapping ass, and hollering out their aggression. It’s like sex on a field with lots of balls. Lots of first downs. Down to the wire games. Drama. Love. Sex. Respect.

And no, we don’t want deflated balls.

The story needed to be able to stand on its own, but bring in the continuation of a story started in my first book, Saving Kane. Irus Beaumont exists in Saving Kane only in name. He is Auntie Beulah’s nephew. Kane’s former lover. A man who let that love slide because of his need to compete. A life destined for football.

Who could fall in love with a man like that but another man who has similar needs? You’d think they’d fall into a bromance from the get go, but not if they feel threatened by the fact that one is an offensive player and the other is defensive player which places them firmly on the opposite sides of the ball. Even in practice, they would be put up against each other in preparation for a battle each week.

Great moments for conflict and attraction.

The scenarios are limitless.

Make one of those players a little older, been in the league for a few years, and the other a year off their rookie season. Still young enough to be brash, loud, and intense. Make one black. The other white. How about one already suspected by his team and others in the league as being gay, while the other one remains firmly entrenched in the closet with a ‘no football player’ rule?

Might work? I gave it a try.

Fourth and Long Cover largeBlurb: Irus Beaumont, cornerback for the Highlanders, has an issue with his nemesis: wideout for the Pirates, Jackson McCoy. Partly jealous over Jackson’s skill and ability to scrub coverage, Irus also struggles against an unbearable attraction to the receiver. Firmly ensconced in the closet, Irus also has a no football player rule, leaving his desires for Jackson unfulfilled. Anti-gay sentiment in the league keeps Irus closeted, even though he’d rather be out and proud.

When Jackson McCoy suffers a gay bashing at the hands of his team mates after winning the national championship, he finds himself traded to the Highlanders. Spring training brings out Jackson’s competitive nature, eliciting the aggression of his new team’s cornerback, Irus Beaumont.

In practice, Irus hurts Jackson badly. The injury places Jackson on the reserve roster. Jacks has plenty of time to contemplate his life, career, and his attraction to the sexy cornerback. Off to Orlando for the best rehab where guilt inspires Irus to call him every evening, Jackson can’t stop thinking about Irus, or what the season holds for his team.
