Blurb: After ten years as an active duty Marine, Captain Eric Ramos is rejoining civilian life. His first job is chauffeuring, assisting, and generally keeping track of NBA young gun Tyler Haley. Tyler’s had a rough few months, and his team owner is convinced he needs some hand-holding if he’s going to keep delivering wins for the St. Louis Fire Foxes.

Instead of the arrogant, over-privileged athlete Eric expected, Tyler is a big, blond, lonely twenty-three-year-old who needs more than just an employee to keep him in line. While taking care of Tyler, Eric changes from employee to friend, to something more. And when Eric realizes that something is burning the kid up from the inside out, he’s determined to find a way to help him before Tyler’s carefully constructed façade turns to ash.

Review: Tyler Haley needs someone to love him – desperately. Outwardly successful and a basketball superstar, inwardly he is starting to crack under his insecurities and low self-worth. Brought up in the foster system and joining the NBA straight out of high school, he longs for a home and someone to see him as the man he is, not just for what they can get out of him. Tyler has issues, serious issues, and needs the strength that Ram can provide for him.

Captain Eric Ramos (or Ram) is straight out of the marines, and the same protective instincts that helped him shield his unit in war, he applies to working with Tyler. It’s almost like watching someone work with a skittish horse or animal in that Ram has to start small – just a home cooked meal – to get Tyler to trust him. By the end of the book you are really rooting for them, and I wish the author would have let us have just a couple more chapters of their life.

Randy Fuller does a fantastic job with the voices. The inflection he gave each character matched the inflection inside my head, so that really worked for me. Fuller’s voice, for me, was easy to listen to, and he made the story come alive. Sometimes with an audiobook you get lost in how the narrator makes the characters sound, and it can be disconcerting. Not so with this book. The narrator makes the story flow, and it was so enjoyable to listen to that when it ended, I wanted not only more story but more Randy Fuller to read it to me.
