At a Glance: Strong follow-up to the first Kiss of Leather book.

Blurb: The men from Kiss of Leather gather together to rescue a terrified young sub. But it’s Master Derek who wants to keep him for good.

Master Gavin and his boy, Kyle, are celebrating their newly established bond when Master Josh calls requesting their help. Josh’s sub, David, needs the men to help his best friend from childhood while they’re away at a BDSM convention in San Francisco.

Corey ran away from his Master after a horrible scene, but he blames himself for everything that happened. No Master would ever want him if they were to find out what he did. Corey’s not sure if he’ll ever feel safe enough to give himself to a Master again anyway, even if all he’s ever wanted was to belong to somebody.

Master Derek agrees to watch over Corey until Josh and David return from the convention. All he needs is another pretty twink messing with his head and his heart, so the older, growly bear of a man determines to keep his distance. But when Corey wakes up screaming after a devastating nightmare, Derek is more drawn than ever to the young sub—the need to keep Corey safe from whatever or whoever has hurt him becoming his main priority.

Kyle and Corey develop a friendship when Corey assists Kyle in the dungeon furniture workshop. Kyle has his own fears—the ones that make him feel he’s broken because of the things he desires to do with Gavin. Through helping Kyle and receiving his own help via Derek, Corey decides he’s ready to let go of the demons from his past and move forward into a new life.

Now if Corey can only get Derek to believe that he’s ready—and to finally do something about it.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a flashback scene of rape by multiple aggressors.

Review: I’ve been a fan of Morticia Knight since reading The Hampton Road Club series, which is BDSM historical fiction. Love it. And I loved the first Kiss of Leather book as well, so when I saw this book came out, I knew I had to read it to see what happened with the club and the men involved.

Before I start the bulk of the review, I will say that this is a series you need to read in order. While the meat of the story involved Derek and Corey, and doesn’t require prior knowledge of the first book, the first chapter is about Gavin and Kyle, and it’s set immediately after the events of book one. I’d also recommend maybe going back to reread the last chapter of book one if it’s been a long time, or if you can’t remember what happened with those boys.

That said, once Corey is safely deposited with Derek, they are the focus of the story, but in order to get there, Kyle and Gavin need to be present.

Corey is a friend of David, and when he gets into trouble, he calls David for help. Of course, David will do anything to help his friend, so, being out of town himself, he enlists the other people he trusts—Gavin, Kyle, and Derek—to help Corey out until he and his Master, Josh, get back. Having had a Dom who hurt him, Corey struggles to trust anyone. He shies away from Kyle and Gavin, and when he sees Derek for the first time, he’s intimidated. Not only is Derek huge and his body language screams Dom, but to Corey he’s gorgeous.

Derek doesn’t really have time for a sub. He’s drawn to young, pretty twinks, and Corey is all that and more. But, he doesn’t want to get involved with someone again, especially not when that person is coming out of a relationship he refuses to talk about. One that has clearly left him afraid. Derek doesn’t even know if the man wants another relationship with a Dom, and not having BDSM in his life is a deal breaker for him. When Gavin and Kyle leave Corey with him, the two have to figure out how to navigate around each other and come to terms with their mutual attraction.

What I love most about Morticia Knight is her ability to create such deep characters. Not one of her characters is alike, and each story is different from the last. While they might have some things in common, that’s what makes them great friends rather than too similar to be interesting. Derek is a gentle giant who likes to work on his Harley. Corey isn’t too sure about wanting a fulltime D/s relationship, unlike Kyle and David, and he loves how big, hairy, and protective Derek is. The insight into Derek’s past is interesting. Readers learn he used to wrestle, and that he has anger management issues. While that might seem like a bad combo for a Dom, he’s fully in control with subs, and his anger stems from people taking advantage of others.

If you’re a fan of Ms. Knight’s writing, I recommend this series, especially if you like her Hampton Road Club books. I eagerly await the next installment! I’m hoping for Marshall, since he was conspicuously absent from this book. Fingers crossed!

SWAT Team Hostage Negotiator, Steve, wonders why he can’t stay away from the spoiled rich Allistair, owner of Dark Fantasy Resort Casino. They have mutual kinks – ones Steve can’t find with other lovers—but there’s something else about the emotionally detached, beautiful man that calls to him.

Billionaire Allistair stays alone in his luxury penthouse apartment at the top of Dark Fantasy, terrified of the real world and of opening himself up to genuine emotions. He takes lover after lover, all of them allowing him to do whatever he wants to their bodies, in the hopes that they can scam something from him.

One night is all he ever shares with a plaything—he knows they only want the money and luxury he can offer them and nothing more. But the down to earth Steve is different. They share the same kinks and are explosive when together. But could the muscled law officer ever want more than the lust-filled encounters that have become such an addiction?

As they grow closer, they discover they also have to find a balance between Steve’s everyday world and Allistair’s entitled world before they can truly find an ever after. They also have to make sure Allistair stays safe. Filthy rich playboys are too tempting to those who seek the ultimate payday—and who aren’t afraid of hurting someone to get it.

Excerpt: Staring at Steve’s sexy body decorated with the welts from the riding crop clarified for him whether he’d worry about dinner yet. He’d curl around Steve in bed for a while and wait for his lover to wake up. Then they could decide together.

Together. Best word ever.

Allistair spooned Steve, inhaling his masculine post-fuck scent. He’d make even more millions if he could ever bottle Steve’s delicious aroma. Then again, Steve was his. No one else could have any.

Steve stirred in his arms. “You did it again. Fucked me unconscious.”

Steve’s words were muffled by the pillow. Allistair splayed his hand over Steve’s belly then let it drift up to tweak a swollen nipple. He arched, hissing. It was the exact reaction he’d hoped for, Steve’s muscles rippling under his touch, a treat for his eyes.

Steve turned in his embrace. They held each other’s gaze, then stole slow, deep kisses from the other. Allistair swept his hands over Steve’s back, Steve returning the touch with caresses of his own. Allistair searched with his fingers for the slightly raised patches of skin where he’d left the marks on Steve’s flesh. As he discovered the warmer spots, he idly checked them for openings that would require an antibiotic cream.

“Mmm. Feels nice.”

Allistair had never met a man so hungry for pain. His cock tingled, twitching with interest. He had no intention of beating Steve anymore for the day, his lover was still coming down from the endorphin rush the last one had caused. But he couldn’t help the surge of arousal his handiwork always inspired. What made it more exciting was Steve’s response to it.

Review: Steve is a hardnosed SWAT negotiator whose job is killing him from the inside out. He’s heavy into BDSM, the release he gets from being a submissive the only thing that keeps him going some days when the hostage situations go bad.

Allistair lives in his penthouse – a jail of his own making – his wealth and own insecurities keeping him prisoner.  He craves a real connection with a partner, and Steve is the only sub he has ever done a scene with more than once. He knows they could connect outside the playroom, if only he could muster the confidence to approach Steve as a man instead of just a Dom.

I enjoyed this book, didn’t love it but enjoyed it. Steve and Allistair together are a very kinky couple, and the sex is hot. I just needed more characterization to go around the scenes.  I enjoy Morticia Knight’s writing and usually she hits it spot-on with her characters, but this one just felt a little one dimensional to me. It’s a great and easy read. The little nuggets we get to see of these men – like Allistair lacing a corset around Steve for the first time – were beautifully written, and it’s these glimpses that keep you reading to the HEA. Though I think the storyline of the relationship between Allistair and his brother (our antagonist in the story) would have been a little more believable if it were fleshed out more.

Negotiating Love follows Held Hostage, and is the fourth book in the Sin City Uniforms series. The books do overlap somewhat, but you do not need to read them in any kind of order, as each story is individual. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting an interesting power dynamic between two men who really can’t get enough of each other.

Title: Building Bonds (Kiss of Leather: Book One)

Author:  Morticia Knight

Publisher: Pride Publishing

Pages/Word Count: 162 Pages

At a Glance: A solid start to a new, contemporary BDSM series.

Reviewed By: Jennifer

Blurb: Kyle’s a natural sub who builds dungeon furniture, yet has no interest in BDSM. It takes a hunky Dom to show him just what he’s been missing.

After Kyle’s partner of five years leaves him for another man on the night of their housewarming party, the shy, early-thirties carpenter needs to do a major reassessment of his life in addition to raising some serious cash. With no one to help him pay the lease on his Los Angeles condo, he worries how he’ll survive. His best friend sets up a meeting with one of the Doms and partners at Kiss of Leather, a gay BDSM club being built as a premier destination for those who want the best of the best.

Master Gavin not only wants the best—he demands it. When he meets Kyle, he assumes that part of the builder’s reticence to share anything personal with him must be due to his experiences with an abusive former Master. Not one to back down from a challenge, Gavin determines to break through the walls surrounding the beautiful man he can’t get out of his mind. He’s hopeful that once he convinces Kyle to sign an initial contract, Kyle might be the first sub to open up his heart.

Misunderstandings and accusations almost destroy everything between them before they have a real chance to begin. However, the true obstacle becomes not only whether Kyle will embrace BDSM as a lifestyle, but also whether he can handle a full-time D/s relationship with a big, bad, scary Dom who’s as sexy as hell.

Dividers

Review: When it comes to books with BDSM themes, there are some authors who are hit or miss, and there are others who build such wonderful worlds every time that I don’t even check to see what the blurb of the book says before digging in. That’s the case with Morticia Knight. As a fan and reviewer of her Hampton Road Club historical BDSM series, I was excited to see this new book out. When I grabbed it for review, I hadn’t even realized it was contemporary, so I was a bit surprised when I started reading. That didn’t deter me, however, because Morticia Knight knows her subject and she writes it well.

If Building Bonds is any indication, the Kiss of Leather series is going to be another great set of books. Set around a contemporary club just being built, this novel follows Kyle, a carpenter who builds BDSM furniture but isn’t in the lifestyle, and Master Gavin, a man without a permanent sub but wanting one. When the two meet, they are attracted to each other, but misunderstandings arise. Master Gavin assumes Kyle is a man abused by his former Dom, when Kyle is just shy and hesitant to speak about his past. Kyle, on the other hand, has never used any of the equipment he builds, and while he says he isn’t into the lifestyle, he is a little curious. When the two finally get together, it’s hot.

I loved the build of their relationship. Yes, it does seem to move fast, especially given Kyle’s reservations and shy nature, but I still enjoyed it. I loved meeting some of the new characters in this series, especially Liam. He might have been on the page for only three of them, but I enjoyed his interaction with Kyle, and I hope he gets his own book. Having him show up and comfort Kyle about his need to safeword just made the book that much deeper for me.

As an added bonus? The Hampton Road Club is mentioned briefly in this book. I thought it was a great homage to the first series. While the location is different, as well as the time period (obviously), I still enjoyed it and was happy to see the author didn’t forget about the series that drew me to her.

If you’re a fan of Morticia Knight, you should give this new series a go. If you’re a fan of BDSM novels, you’ll likely enjoy this book. Check it out!

Guest Post and Exclusive Excerpt: The Countdown to GayRomLit with Morticia Knight

GRL blog tour Banner 800px

Today we’re so pleased to welcome author Morticia Knight to help us continue the countdown celebration to GayRomLit 2015 in San Diego. A big thanks to Novel Approach for hosting me today for one of my stops on the GRL blog tour! In a shocking development, I’m more organized than I’ve ever been for a Con. Even the amount of swag I have prepared is crazy. Swag is a funny thing. The amount of free items we gather when we attend an event such as this can be overwhelming. As a fangirl reader as well as author, I have a fair collection that I’ve amassed from every event I’ve gone to.

I know there’s been a bit of a backlash against paper swag because so much of it gets tossed, but I’ll confess I still enjoy getting a bookmark or postcard – particularly if it contains a blurb or tag as a reminder as to what the story is about. I’m sure most readers are like me in that they hear about tons of books on a continuous basis that they’re interested in reading, but only remember a smattering of them. I’ve added books to my wish list or had a sample sent to my kindle as a reminder – but sometimes that physical representation is a better reminder. And yes – I still use bookmarks!

But there have been many other fun and interesting goodies that have sprung up in recent years (I promise that’ll be the only double entendre I use in this post). Hunting for the premium swag might become an Olympic sport soon. From an author’s point of view, it becomes a challenge to figure out what might be cool, fun and not too expensive to buy a ton of to give away. With the pricier items it comes down to taking a big financial hit, having a severely limited first come/first served amount (Dammit. Second one.), or a free with purchase item.

All Fired Up bookmark swag

I’ve opted for the latter with my bookmark charms. The first time I saw these things I about had a meltdown, they’re so cool. They feature a book cover charm, matching beads and charms that relate to the book characters. For example, for All Fired Up, there’s a fireman’s axe and a cop’s badge. What I’m doing is offering the corresponding bookmark for free with purchase of the paperback. I had to – these things are crazy expensive, but in my opinion, too awesome not to have.

BuildingBonds flogger keychains

But I also have plenty of other items that I’ll be giving away to whoever wants them. I have some Morticia Knight ribbon bookmarks, and magnets that feature the covers of most of my books. The most popular item though, has been the mini flogger keychains. I have brand new ones for GRL that are specifically for Building Bonds, as well as Building Bonds necklaces. I can’t take credit for any of this – not even the ideas – they were all made for me. Stop by my table and grab some while you can! I’m curious, what are your favorite swag items?

Exclusive Excerpt: Gavin shut off the water then straightened. He undid what Kyle surmised was a silk dress shirt then began to remove it. There were a few spots from when he’d rubbed his face on it as he’d cried. Kyle cringed. He had no idea how expensive an item it was. Based on the whole ‘I must provide for you in all ways’ thing, he doubted he’d be allowed to replace it if it was ruined. Would he get punished for those kinds of offenses instead?

“Kyle. I don’t want to have to prod you every single time there’s something churning in your mind that you’re either wondering about or is causing you stress. I expect you to ask me at least three more things of your own accord tonight. If you don’t, I’ll add that to your punishment tomorrow.”

Damn.

“Okay. I want to replace your shirt if it’s been ruined by me crying on it, but I don’t think you’ll let me.”

Gavin nodded, his eyes narrowing. “You’re right. I won’t.”

He waited, but Gavin didn’t elaborate. “But what if I want to do it? What if it makes me feel bad if I don’t?”

“Did you do it on purpose?”

“No, of course not. I just…” He frowned. “I’m a responsible person. I like to think I own up to my mistakes.”

“I’m very happy to hear that and I believe you. There’ll be many opportunities as we work together for you to discover the veracity of that. But in regards to the shirt? I doubt it’s ruined, it likely only needs a professional cleaning.” Gavin held his hand up, undoubtedly using his super psychic Dom powers to know that Kyle was about to protest. “And I would’ve taken it to be cleaned with or without the crying. But I’m a responsible person too, Kyle. I embraced you knowing that you were crying, knowing that there might be some spots. That was my choice.” Gavin stroked his cheek with the back of his hand. “Being accountable for your actions is an important attribute, one I treasure. But don’t take responsibility for something that’s not your fault.”

“That was… Thank you.” Kyle sucked in a big gulp of air then let it out slowly, Gavin’s words lightening him somehow.

“Been blamed a lot in your life?”

Gavin lifted his tank over his head and Kyle momentarily lost his concentration. Men with broad, perfectly sculpted chests that topped defined abs had never shown him any interest before. Of course, he supposed leaving the house and socializing would’ve made it more likely to occur, but the fact remained that he’d never been with a man who was shaped like a god before. He narrowed his eyes at Gavin’s generous sized nipples.

“Boy. I asked you a question.”

“Oh. Right.” He glanced up at Gavin as he quickly ran the topic of their conversation through his mind. “Actually, now that you mention it, yes. Definitely by my dad, Roger, oh, and Dean, another guy I went out with for a while.”

“Hmm.” Gavin’s remark had come out rather growly. “You can tell me about him later.”

Kyle went back to staring at Gavin’s torso, stepping a bit closer. He’d assumed that every time Gavin had held him close that his arousal had been what had made his nipples so big and hard. However, it appeared that the barbell piercings had more to do with his pebbling than anything.

“Do you like them?”

Kyle couldn’t look away. It was so sexy. He’d never before thought that he’d want to be with a lover who had anything pierced.

Then again, BDSM used to be on the never, ever, ever list too.

Blurb: Evan sees a Master who could be his whole world and Ned sees a beautiful boy in need. But shattered trust and broken hearts could keep them apart forever.

Evan landed on his ex-Master’s doorstep after Master Gabriel dumped him for a virgin. He’d hoped Thomas would take him back, but he’s moved on with his new submissive, Linus. Evan has nowhere to go and barely a penny to his name. Fortunately, Master Aaron and his boy, Sam, invite him to stay at their guesthouse. Alone and abandoned, Evan aches for a Master who can give him more—if only he knew what ‘more’ meant.

Master Ned has finally decided to settle down in one place after traveling on the road for years. He’s always loved the Hampton Road Club—it’s a private sanctuary for men such as himself. The roaring twenties might be freer than ever, but the decadence of the sadomasochistic club could put its members in danger if they’re not discreet.

Ned’s on the lookout for an untried boy who’s ready to fully submit to him on a daily basis. In return, he plans to train and care for his submissive. If he can also find love, then his life will be perfect.

After Evan is introduced to Ned at the club, they have an intense encounter that catches them both by surprise. What should lead to a possible future for them as Master and submissive is destroyed when Ned mysteriously casts Evan aside. Evan wonders if he’ll ever be good enough to keep a Master, and Ned fears he may have lost the best thing that ever happened to him.

Shattered trust and broken hearts have to be repaired before Evan and Ned can find their way to each other—if it’s not already too late.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a scene of exhibitionism. Publisher’s Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series.

Review: While you don’t necessarily need to read this series in order (I still haven’t read book one, though I do now own it in paperback), I would recommend reading book three before book four, because Evan is introduced at the tail end of the third book. While the author does a great job of discussing his backstory in this novel so that new readers won’t be missing out, I think it just wouldn’t do it justice to not know exactly what transpired between Thomas, Linus, and Evan.

In April, I had the surprising pleasure of meeting Morticia Knight at the Rainbow Book Fair in NYC. I was there with my publisher, and after wandering around looking for books to buy, I stumbled across her table and pretty much exploded in excitement. After chatting with her—she’s super nice—I bought the first three books in the series in paperback. Hurray! I was also excited to learn Evan and Ned would have their story next!

It’s interesting how everything is starting to really connect in this series. Ned is the man who initially brings Linus to Hampton Road Club in book two, and now he’s back, looking for his own boy. Evan is still recovering from the shock of finding Master Thomas taken after having been kicked out by Master Gabriel. Of course, you know what’s going to happen next.

It’s not easy for these men, though. Master Ned believe he needs an innocent man not yet mastered by a man. In other words, a virgin. Which is Evan’s greatest fear—Master Gabriel tossed him out because he found someone younger and “better.” My heart broke for Evan because of how tormented he was. Even though Sam, Linus, and the other submissives take to him, he still worries about finding the right Master for him.

Even though the story focuses on Evan and Ned, I did enjoy seeing how all the other boys are coming along. Of course, I STILL want Theodore and Francesco’s story. I love seeing Francesco practically crawling out of his skin every five seconds. And Kenneth is like the older brother sub. Seeing him—so much older—than all the others, and completely calm and collected, is kind of funny. During the lawn party, I just pictured him as this patient Golden Retriever, calmly sitting there and then going about his business while the puppies tumble all around him and get in the way. It made me laugh.

I really hope there is more to this series. My bet and hope is for Colin to be next, and he’s so different from the others. I’m not sure who the Dom would be, though the more the series goes on, the more I’m intrigued by Javier, who is always in the background. Maybe it’s time for him to have a chance? Or would he be a sub? No matter what happens, I hope this series is far from over.

Excerpt:  Beau waited until they were finished. Austin promised to come back in a few days to help Rich sort through boxes of clothing donations to decide what could be used, what had to be tossed and what needed to be cleaned. There was another pull at Beau’s heart. There was some more playful joking with Rich then Austin turned to Beau.

“Thanks, man. You guys were really great. I mean it.”

“It was my pleasure.” Beau was surprised at his unexpected bout of shyness. “Are you too tired to—”

“I’m never too tired for that.” Austin had blurted it out then seemed to catch himself. “Oops. You were probably only going to ask if I was too tired to give you a ride or something.”

Beau snorted. “You could give me a ride, but it wouldn’t be in a car.”

Austin’s mouth dropped open then he quickly recovered. “Detective Williams. I’m scandalized.” He put a hand over his heart. “You not only made a dirty joke but you’ve insinuated that I’ve fallen so hard for your charms that you can have me at your whim.”

“I…”

“And you would be right.”

“That wasn’t very romantic, was it?”

“No, but because you’re so fucking hot, I’ll forgive you.” Austin clapped a hand over his mouth. “Shit. It’s a good thing Rich didn’t hear me. I’m already the top contributor to the swear jar.”

“So he wasn’t kidding earlier. They’re really able to control the kid’s cursing with that?”

“Pphhh. Hardly. But Rich said I can out-curse everyone here ten times over and that I’m a bad influence.”

Beau leaned in to whisper in Austin’s ear. “You’re a bad influence on me, but in a very good way.”

“Hot damn. Let’s get outta here.”

Grinning, Beau laid his hand on Austin’s arm. “I do have to take Parker and Lonnie home first though, so I can’t get to your place for another thirty minutes or so. Is that too late?”

Parker called over right then. “Beau, Rich is driving us back to the apartment—that okay?”

Beau wondered how much of that had been spontaneous and how much had been for Beau and Austin’s benefit. As he walked over to his friends to say goodbye, Austin jogged ahead. By the time Beau had reached them, he caught the tail end of the conversation with Austin and Parker exchanging numbers.

“This is genuinely appreciated, man. I was sure we were fucked sideways.”

Rich grunted. “Pay up, Austin.”

“Aw, come on. There aren’t any kids around!”

Rich shook his head grimly. “You’re still in the building, dude. It counts.”

“Goddammit.” Austin reached into his wallet and pulled out a five.

“Ahem. And another five for the second one. Oh, and for the others earlier.” Rich held his palm up.

“You’re bleeding me dry, kid.”

“And we appreciate doing business with your potty mouth.”

Review: Austin Kent works as an Investigative Technician for the DA’s Office in Las Vegas, delivering subpoenas to potential witnesses. Then one day he has to deliver one that leads to the tragic death of a childhood friend, and his co-worker, Kyle, being injured. Austin tries to search out friends who will give him the distraction he needs, but everyone turns him down. He winds up alone at El Lagarto, sitting at the bar and drinking just a little too much.

Beau Williams is a detective with the Las Vegas PD. He has a string of unsolved murders to deal with. He’s got dinner plans for the evening with friends, Parker and Lonnie. They also wind up at El Lagarto. As Beau makes his way to the bar, he accidentally bumps Austin and while apologizing, Austin recognizes him as a detective he delivered blood evidence files to for the Deuces Wild Motel killings. Austin strikes up a conversation with Beau but as soon as Beau’s order arrives, he heads back to his table, but over the course of the evening, he keeps watch over Austin, as he’s figured Austin is drinking because something bad has happened. When an argument breaks out between Austin and another customer, Beau steps in along with Parker.

Escorting Austin home, Beau discovers Austin is a little accident prone, lonely, and hides behind jokes and sarcasm. Beau is finding he has an interest in Austin, but is that what he really wants? Beau thinks he needs someone more refined, smart and sophisticated, better than his ex-lover.

Justice Prevails is a suspenseful, and a little scary, murder mystery in the Sin City Uniform series. Austin and Beau are such a great fit together, and it was also nice to revisit Parker and Lonnie in this book. If you’re a fan of Morticia Knight and the men of Sin City, I’d recommend reading Justice Prevails.

Review: Disclaimer: I still have not read the first book in this series, though I did read and review book two for The Novel Approach. That said, even though this is a series, you can read this as a standalone, though knowledge of book two will help you understand more of book three, even if the events of book two are covered adequately.

I was correct in my prediction for Thomas and Linus! Hurray! I love these two so much, and even though I haven’t read the first book, I will admit these two are my favorite. My heart broke so many times during this story, watching Linus suffer with his insecurities after suffering at the hands of Preston. He’s such a lovable, awkward character. He has difficulty expressing himself, and his speech pattern is unique, which might drive some readers crazy with how many times he says “um” during a conversation. But I loved him. And Thomas. The two just work so beautifully together. And while this story is on the BDSM spectrum, it’s rather light compared to others, given Linus’s hesitation.

The plot itself is a bit predictable, but you know what? I didn’t care about that because I cared about the characters so much. They drove the story. Seeing Linus begin to blossom while interacting with Thomas felt so good. I cheered for the two of them the entire book.

I do wish there had been more of them at the club, Hampton Road. I mean, granted, given Linus’s aversion to the place it didn’t seem likely, but I did enjoy reading about him with the other submissives, and those times aren’t too often in this book. Most of those interactions are with Sam, and it’s at the plant nursery.

Okay, so book four. I’m hoping there will be a book four, and my prediction is Ned and Evan. I hope so, at least! Although, I really, REALLY want to read more about Francesco and Theodore. Francesco is just so different from the other subs. He loves being disobedient and every time he’s on the page, I end up laughing.

In this series, there really is a different type of character for everyone’s tastes, and I’m finding that’s part of what I love about the series so much. Not one character is too much like another, despite there being quite a few so far. Each one has his idiosyncrasies, and his partner complements him to make the book balanced. It takes skill to maintain that level of consistency throughout a series, and so far there’s not a slip in sight.

BDSM Prior to Safe, Sane and Consensual

Thank you for having me here today! I’ll be talking about my BDSM series, The Hampton Road Club and what it is that makes this series different from other BDSM and D/s stories. The main reason? The series is set in the 1920s. There was no such thing as safe, sane and consensual, no standard rules that applied to those in the lifestyle. Actually, it was never even referred to as the ‘lifestyle’. The acronyms of BDSM, D/s or terms such as ‘safe word’, sub, Dom, and such didn’t exist yet. I had to be very careful when crafting the stories of these men that I didn’t lapse into contemporary speak.

Since this series spun off of Book 5 of the Gin & Jazz series, Studio Orders, I had already done much of the research regarding BDSM history as it relates to a universal understanding between those who practice it. I had also completed seven books in the Gin & Jazz series (all set in the twenties as well) and was easily able to keep the time period accurate – including the cadence of speech. But once I decided to take the club that is only mentioned in Studio Orders and adapt it into an entire series revolving around BDSM during that era – therein lay the real challenge. However, it was also a wonderful opportunity for me to imagine what could’ve happened when the seeds of unifying the lifestyle into a more consistent and safe environment might have been planted.

This is where the joys of artistic license took over. I took everything that I knew to be historically accurate and everything I didn’t know at all then combined them together. I imagined what events might have taken place that would have led to a universal agreement of terminology and practices – how BDSM might have actually evolved to what it is today. The events that happen in each book take you through the steps that lead you from the development of one modern idea to the next.

What came out of that has been incredibly fun for me to write. There are the usual emotional and psychological elements of D/s that are encountered when two consenting adults enter into such an agreement – including the fact that there is an agreement at all. There are the typical BDSM interactions such as impact play (although, again, not a term in use at the time), but I also had to add in the scary parts that had nothing to do with what went on between the men. Homosexuality is not accepted at all in society – laws are in place against sodomy. While it’s still possible to be arrested for assault today from the practice of BDSM – it was assured back then. The double secrecy of writing about a gay BDSM club was an intense challenge to craft in order to maintain the believability.

Overall, The Hampton Road Club has become very special to me and the men who work so hard to find a lasting partner under such overwhelming obstacles and challenges I believe will stay with me a long time.

If you’re attending Euro Pride Con, I’ll be there with at least one or two installments of the series. I’m really looking forward to this Con, and if you haven’t signed up yet – make sure you check it out. One of the big reasons I wanted to go is perhaps the most obvious – I get to go to Germany! But there’s also much more to it than that. I do have a German and European readership who I might never have the opportunity to meet if I only ever attend cons in the US, or even in the UK. I’m also very interested in discovering the similarities and differences in the M/M romance scene. I can’t wait to go.

I’d like to share with you an excerpt from the third installment of The Hampton Road Club. This is from The Fear of Surrender, where we get the story of Master Thomas and the submissive Linus who was mistreated in a former book at the club by a disreputable Master. In this scene, Thomas is seeing Linus the first time since his abuse at the club and is trying to convince him to visit the man who in Book 2, The Rules of Love, had sacrificed his own safety to protect Linus.

EXCERPT:

Sam re-entered the living area, holding onto Linus’ hand as the shy boy trailed behind him. He resisted the urge to frown—he was concerned it could be misinterpreted by the reticent young man. He mentally kicked himself again for not following through on his initial instinct to claim Linus. It would have saved both of them so much grief. Jet-black hair with bright blue eyes had stunned him from the first time Thomas had spied Linus at the club. His perfectly soft pale skin—a startling contrast to the color of his hair—had pinked beautifully when Thomas had spanked him. And there had been such a natural connection between them both. Why hadn’t he simply followed through?

Thomas rubbed his eyes and groaned. He needed to get a hold of himself. When he lowered his hands, he caught Linus staring at him before he quickly averted his gaze. His cheeks reddened.

Does he still have an affection for me?

If there was a small chance that Linus might give him the opportunity for them to be together again, it wasn’t the right moment to uncover the possibility. But Thomas filed the idea away for later.

“There’s nothing to worry about. Things went very well. Preston is gone—never coming back, I might add—and Kenneth will be staying with Saul from now on.”

“Kenneth is okay?” Linus’ small voice betrayed his nervousness, but he didn’t look away.

Thomas gave him what he hoped was a comforting smile. “Yes, he’s fine. But since he’s not going to be coming back here and Saul has to handle some business at the club before he takes Kenneth home with him, we need all of you to help.”

“How can we help?”

Francesco appeared excited over the possibility. He was grinning and bouncing even more enthusiastically on the balls of his feet. Sam still clutched Linus’ hand as he exchanged glances with him.

“We would like for you all to come with me to Hampton Road and keep Kenneth company for a while until he can go with Saul. As you can imagine, this has all been very upsetting and it would be nice for him to have some friends so that he’s not alone while he waits.”

“Then what are we all standing here for? Let’s go!” Francesco turned to his friends right as Linus pulled away from Sam, his eyes widened in apparent panic. “Oh. Well, we can go and Linus can stay here. Right?”

Frustration filled Thomas at Francesco’s words, in particular because Linus had visibly calmed because of them. His shoulders had relaxed and he’d let loose a sigh, as if in relief.

“Sam and Francesco, would you wait in the car please? I’ll be there shortly.”

For once, Francesco quietly did as he was told and they both left the house. Left him alone with Linus. Linus bowed his head and clasped his hands in front of him. Thomas was disappointed that his tension had reappeared. He didn’t have time to be coy with Linus, so he dove right in.

“Are you still afraid of going to Hampton Road?”

Linus shrugged. His response reminded Thomas of how he’d planned to work with Linus on expressing himself better before Preston had entered the picture.

“Words please.”

Linus jerked his chin up, a hint of defiance in his gaze.

Good.

“I don’t see why I have to go back there. I, um, I already told Masters Aaron and Saul I wouldn’t return.” He visibly swallowed. “Even if Preston isn’t there anymore, it’s not as if there’s a reason to go back.” His cheeks reddened and he lowered his head again.

“Yes there is. Right now, Kenneth is your reason.” Thomas sucked in a breath. “Perhaps another time you’ll have a different one.”

Linus darted his eyes around the room and worried his hands. At last, he peered up at Thomas. “Is Kenneth very upset?”

Thomas couldn’t lie, even if wanted to convince Linus to go more than anything. He held the hope inside that if Linus returned, it might break the fear that being at the club had instilled in him.

“I honestly didn’t see him, Linus. I’m going by what Aaron told me, and I’ve always known him to be a truthful man. But if I were to make a wager, I think it would mean a lot to Kenneth to know that you’re all right too. He asked about you.”

“He did?” Linus’ eyes rounded and Thomas knew he’d found the one thing that could reach Linus.

“Yes, he did.” Thomas kept his voice soft. “Would you please come with us for Kenneth’s sake?” He took another deep breath. He had to let out the emotions that had plagued him ever since he’d learned of Linus’ abuse. “Please forgive me, Linus. I feel as if I let you down—that I should have protected you from…from that despicable cur.”

Linus blushed furiously and Thomas wished they were in different circumstances right then, that he could uncover the truth of what was going on inside the young man. He seemed to get control of himself enough to meet Thomas’ gaze again.

“It’s not your fault, Sir. I shouldn’t have gone with him. I only did it, um, because…” Linus shook his head, frowning. “Anyway, I don’t blame you, Sir.”

Because why?

Thomas wouldn’t press him. He sensed that he’d made progress with the young man, so he didn’t want to scare him off. There still might be a chance for them.

“That’s very kind of you Linus. But I want you to understand that what happened to you wasn’t your fault either. You were the victim and he had no right. Don’t ever blame yourself for another person’s wrongs.” Thomas took a breath to calm himself. “Will you come with us now though? Just for this one night? I promise to watch out for you while you’re there. I won’t let anyone near the room where you’ll be visiting with Kenneth.”

Linus nodded then seemed to remember. “Okay. I’ll go.”

Thomas wanted to shout with joy. He surprised himself with how much Linus’ agreement had mattered.

“Thank you very much, Linus. I know it’ll make Kenneth happy.” Despite the ache to do so, Thomas didn’t dare touch him. He stepped to the side then gestured to the door. “Shall we?”

Linus regarded him with his deep-blue eyes that a man could drown in. Not reaching out for him was near impossible, but Thomas kept himself in check.

“Yes, Sir.”

The way Linus said it, the way his words went to his core, told Thomas all that he needed to know. He wanted Linus more than he’d ever wanted a man before and he would do whatever he could to win him over.

Respect all, fear none is the Rebel Riders Motorcycle Club’s motto. Will the Riders step up when the Demon Outlaws go after one of their own?

Sky Warren doesn’t let the screen door smack him on the way out of Kansas. When his former abusive partner Duke is arrested for selling drugs, Sky takes off. He’s ready for a clean start and a change of scenery. Moving to Lakewood, Colorado, with his cousin and accepting a job in Billy’s bike shop seems like just what he needs to start over. In Billy’s riding club he meets Task Rivers, a handsome, sexy biker, and they hit it off immediately. Task is edgy, yet he shows Sky how a respectful and considerate man treats his partner. The two fall into a lusty, passionate relationship.

Death before dishonor. The Demon Outlaws have another way of looking at life. When Duke Lessing comes after Sky and is rebuffed, he joins the Outlaws in their troublemaking ways. With the Demons spoiling for a fight, Task calls on a few of the more hardcore Rebel Riders. As the night heats up, Sky is determined to avoid what seems like inevitable bloodshed. He wants to leave and lure the Demons away, but Task and the Rebel Riders have other ideas. Sky knows Duke doesn’t give up easily and learns that neither does Task, who’s fighting for what he wants. But will it be a fight to the death?

Mantrap by L.M. Somerton

Not all cages have bars.

The Wyverns Motorcycle Club has a reputation as fierce as its dragon emblem. Its enigmatic leader, Rogue Hellaby, has a police file so thick you could prop up a table with it. The qualifications for membership are a reckless disregard for authority and the attitude of a spitting cobra. But The Wyverns MC is not quite what it seems. All the riders have dubious histories in the military or the police—now they just serve and protect their own interests and those of Horatio Trap, the manipulative bastard who recruited them.

When Rogue receives an instruction to kidnap and hold hostage the son of a powerful drug lord, he doesn’t bat an eyelid. But Rogue has never had to deal with a captive like Orlando de la Pena. Orlando is furious—not because he’s being held prisoner, but because he’s prevented from partying at his favorite BDSM club. Rogue discovers that the only way to deal with Orlando is to become the Dom he so obviously needs. But Orlando’s father wants him back, and The Wyverns must face a battle that could cost them their lives.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of light BDSM.

Biking Bad by Morticia Knight

When Dylan, a young wannabe investigator, stumbles into the Mojave Sidewinder’s MC bar, he finds all kinds of trouble—especially in biker Luc ‘Zero’ Villarojas.

The Mojave Sidewinders is the largest gay MC club in Southern California. They’re also one-percenters, which makes them alluring to those looking for trouble and a danger to those making it. Luc ‘Zero’ Villarojas has been a brother ever since the club’s prez took him in as a runaway. At thirty-four years of age, he’s content to ride his hog, chase tail and run his tattoo and piercing parlor, Zero to Sixty.

Dylan has had to take care of himself since his aunt died when he was still a teen. Even though he’s barely twenty-two years old, the small spitfire has made his way in the world as best as he can and has even started his own would-be investigative agency. He’s proud of himself, even if his agency is on the edge of town in a ramshackle building.

Working his first big case involving a missing young man, Dylan barges into Road Rage, the Mojave Sidewinder’s exclusive bar, and starts asking questions. When it looks as though he’s about to get beaten up, a large, muscled biker covered in ink comes to his aid. Dylan’s incredibly attracted to him—even if Zero is pretty scary and Dylan’s still a virgin. But is there something Zero knows about the missing man that he’s hiding? And is Dylan in more danger than he realises?

Review: I will say this about the Hard Riders anthology: the stories were well written, sexy and exciting. I don’t know what it is these days about the 1%ers that has become such a fascination, but I just didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. I don’t know what I was expecting when I started reading the book, but it wasn’t a gay version of Sons of Anarchy. Not that there is anything wrong with that, and I am most likely in the minority here, but I think everything was over the top.

Motorcyclists have always been subjected to scrutiny and disdain, but I think Hollywood has added too much hype on what was once considered a way of getting back the comradeship of the trust built in the trenches by the soldiers returning from war in the 40’s, and an overabundance of military bikes. History shows us that all it took was one drunken incident to paint those who ride with a tar and feather brush, and I think sensationalizing the lifestyle doesn’t do anyone any good.

Anyway.

I enjoyed the mystery aspect of Morticia Knight’s Biking Bad; the story I liked most of the three. Jenna Byrnes’ Clear Blue Sky troubled me. I didn’t like the fact that Sky continued to put up with what I considered abusive behavior after promising himself not to fall back into that lifestyle. Realistic, but disappointing. L.M. Somerton’s Mantrap was pure smutty goodness, BDSM parts included, despite the improbable outcome of the MC overcoming a drug lord’s thugs. Fun premise, though.

‘A Ring and a Vow’ by Devon Rhodes

Every promise must someday be fulfilled, and the best way Owen knows how to reward Cary’s faith is with a vow.

It’s been nearly five years since Owen went down on one knee with his Academy ring and promised Cary he’d someday do it for real. With Cary being a Naval aviator and Owen a Marine officer serving in Iraq, they’re rarely on the same continent, let alone together.

About time for them to fill out paperwork to re-up, Owen realizes that if they were married, they’d have a much better chance of being stationed nearby. But time is not on their side, so he’s forced to compromise on his proposal in order to make it work.

Cary has been waiting for Owen for years—there was no chance he’d ever say anything but yes. Owen is coming home at last, and wants to make a home with him. However, between the chronic nightmares he’s been fighting and the ever more complicated wedding plans, the next month could be anything but a dream.
Publisher’s Note: This book is the sequel to A Ring and a Promise.

‘My Marine’ by LE Franks and Sara York

For a man who made his career in intelligence, falling for an Afghani national in the middle of a war zone wasn’t the smartest thing a Marine could do.

Marine Captain Sean Kelley loves his country and the men he serves with, but when he meets Akim, he’s tempted to throw it all away for the mysterious man. He knows better than to chase after a local, but repeat encounters culminating in a moment of passion leave him reeling—he’ll do almost anything to figure out how they can be together.

Akim Bijan has a secret of his own—one large enough to get more than just himself killed if it’s revealed. But from the moment he first lays eyes on the handsome Marine, he’s tempted to do just that rather than hide his growing attraction to the man. Being a translator allows him access to the base and he finds Sean alone one night. They take things farther than he ever intended. If only he could tell Sean everything, but his lips are sealed.

When tragedy strikes, Akim is afraid he’s lost Sean for good and he’s forced to make a decision that will change both their lives. Will love win—or will Sean and Akim be separated forever?

‘Soul Sick’ by Kendall McKenna

Tucker is a reformed bad boy who has an advanced degree and an important job but still sports long hair and tattoos. He missed Jamie while he was deployed, but he couldn’t stop living his own life. Now, they’re struggling to learn to live with each other again, and things are going downhill fast.

Jamie wants everything to be the way it used to, but his anger and self-destructive behavior begin to push Tucker away. Too much alcohol and a night of violence inside their home take them nearly to the brink. Tucker is willing to fight alongside Jamie to keep it all from falling apart, if Jamie can learn to accept the help he needs…before it’s too late.

Review: Anomaly by S.A. McAuley

Staff Sergeant Galen Welc has a nickname—Magneto. He has this strange ability to uncover IED’s before they take out his brothers in arms. When he is sent to a training facility to pit his abilities against that of new military drones, the last thing Galen is expecting is to meet a man who pushes all his buttons in just the right way. When he finds out that the man he has just met is the scientist behind the creation of the latest drone, sparks fly!

While I liked the promise of this story, it was so short that I found myself wondering who these guys were and how they could ever really match up beyond their love for the challenge of being the fastest man to uncover IED’s. The romance element never went beyond a seeming one-night stand and I had to make the leap from that to a potential relationship by story’s end. I just really wanted to get to know these guys more, and we ran out of story before I could do that. 2.5 stars

Always Ready by T.A. Chase

Jake is part of the Coast Guard whose one job is to save lives on the open sea. Phil is a crabber—on the Bering Sea where storms and gale force winds are not uncommon. One man lives for the danger, the other for the rescue. Each lives for the other. But Phil is in the closet and afraid to tell his family that he is deeply in love with Jake. Two years of hiding and torrid, fast hookups on a rare weekend a month have left both men wondering about their jobs and the distance it forces between them and whether they can go on living so far apart.

For a short story, I felt there was such depth to these characters. Their love for each other was as apparent as was their love for their jobs. How to rectify the great distance between them that gave them only a weekend a month to be together was an overwhelming concern for both of them. I felt the real pull that Jake felt for his job versus his lover, Phil. Jake rescues people for a living and he loves his job—despite the real fact that sometimes mother nature wins and Jake cannot save everyone. Phil is poised to take over a many generation boating legacy and already feels strongly for his crew—viewing them as a captain would. But Phil is so tired of hiding his love for Jake and while Jake would never push Phil to come out, his own disastrous coming out story shadows how he thinks. Well written, the story of love and respect that these two men have for each other is palpable and told in such a way as to also prove to be a loving tribute to those who keep our waters safe. 4.5 stars

A Ring And A Vow by Devon Rhodes

First, let me say that reading this short sequel has made me go off and purchase the original novel this short story is based on. Secondly, I am hoping that a major plot point is somehow addressed in the initial book, as I felt it was the only weak spot in an otherwise lovely finish to the tale of two young men so very much in love.

Cary is a pilot in the navy, Owen is in the marines, and at the opening of the story is deployed in enemy territory. They have spent the five years since the academy, where they met and fell in love, being stationed apart and longing for each other. During that time, Cary has been plagued with violent nightmares of Owen’s death. One month prior to coming home, Owen finally makes good on his promise, given years before, and asks Cary to marry him. Cary accepts and the rest of this story describes their time together in small vignettes leading up to their actual wedding day.

I was smitten with these two young men right away. The story balanced both their inner thoughts and fears against their love and support for each other. I felt so drawn to them and enjoyed how each chapter seemed to be another peek at their whirlwind wedding preparations and their new assignments in their various branches of service.

However, I never felt that the near paralyzing nightmares that Cary had been experiencing were fully addressed and indeed, they just seemed to disappear altogether. While I know that having Owen home would and should relieve Cary of his dreams, I also know the author chose to have Cary plagued by a last nightmare after Owen was home and in his arms their first night. For me, never really stating that Cary’s nightmares were gone left a major plot point unfinished and was, absolutely, the only flaw in an otherwise lovely story. 4 stars

My Marine by LE Franks & Sara York

Sean Green has seen the Afghani interpreter, Akim, come and go on the base and has taken notice of him. If only he could speak with the man, find out more about him. But this is wartime and while the interpreter is aiding the US, he is also the enemy. Then one chance meeting, and lust and yearning take over, and suddenly Sean knows that when he is finally sent stateside again he will do everything in his power to bring Akim with him. But what if Akin is not who he says he is? What if he is hiding a secret that will tear the two men apart?

My Marine was a sweet story with a few interesting twists and turns. When Akim’s secret was revealed I must admit I was pretty surprised and to be honest, understood Sean’s reactions completely. And it was just here that the story fell apart a bit for me. Sean began with strong sentiments about how Akin had lied to him. He admitted to himself that it was like he never really knew Akim, so why the sudden and swift capitulation at the story’s end? I felt that both men should have worked a little harder at reestablishing trust and not moved into intimacy immediately. There had, up to that point, been a plausible and very interesting story—if only the ending had been just a bit more drawn out. 3.5 stars

Soul Sick by Kendall McKenna

Jamie brings more than external scars from shrapnel home from deployment. Inside he is still trapped on the battlefield, and he is rapidly losing ground. Tucker has been waiting a year for his lover, but the man who comes home bears little resemblance to the one who left, and Tucker is worried that if Jamie doesn’t seek help soon, more will be lost than their partnership.

This was a very raw look at the effects of PTSD on a returning soldier. Jamie simply comes unraveled, going as far as physically threatening Tucker. Jamie wants to have everything as it was, but even the smallest of things picks at him, making him bleed a little more each day. It is both sad and scary watching Jamie devolve into a madman who cannot always be reasoned with before he lashes out.

My only regret with this story was the way it jumped, seemingly without a segue, into the future, where Jamie was apparently beginning to turn things around with the help of counseling. Admittedly and wisely, author Kendall McKenna did not allow Jamie to be instantly “fixed”; rather, we saw his ongoing turmoil right up to the end. But it was the abrupt way in which we were thrust into this future time of recovery that jangled a bit. Suddenly we were there and made to understand that during this unmarked time, Tucker and Jamie had actually been sleeping apart. Because the ending seemed to thrust us into a future that had no explanation, I felt the story rushed to the end and we never had a sense of healing or, more importantly, rebuilt trust between the two lovers. 3 stars

Safe Shores by Morticia Knight

Months go by before Kirk, a small time fisherman, and his lover Shane, a coast guard diver, are able to see one another. But their relationship has only gotten better over the last two years, and this visit finds both of them contemplating saying those three little words that every one yearns to hear. But Kirk is older than Shane by ten years and has a son by a long dissolved marriage that keeps him tethered to the small town he grew up in. Can these two make a go of it when distance and time seem intent on keeping them apart?

Safe Shores is a full out love story between two men who are ready to take the leap at a future they both desire. Even though both feel deeply for the other, saying I love you does not roll easily off the tongue, and both Shane and Kirk are worried that the other may not be ready for such a huge commitment.

I really enjoyed this story. I felt immediately drawn to these characters and felt completely invested in their story as a result. I particularly liked how both the men were very strong in their own right—while BDSM was a brief part of this love story, it was done with strength and truth, making it very erotic. All in all, Safe Shores was a nice way to end this well done anthology. 5 stars

Review: The Rules of Love (The Hampton Road Club: Book Two) by Morticia Knight

Title: The Rules of Love (The Hampton Road Club: Book Two)

Author: Morticia Knight

Publisher: Totally Bound

Pages/Word Count: 167 Pages

At a Glance: Historical romance mixes with BDSM in this second book of a series

Blurb: Master Saul is captivated by the beautifully submissive Kenneth and the boy’s love of pain. Unfortunately, Kenneth belongs to Master Preston.

It’s 1926 and as one of the founding members of the Hampton Road Club, Master Saul Liebowitz has enjoyed the charms of many willing submissives over the years. One of the newer submissives to the club has captured his attention more than anyone has in a long time. Kenneth is tall, muscular and also seems to have a greater love of pain than most. If only Kenneth didn’t already belong to another Master.

After Kenneth’s Master died years before, he allowed himself to be taken in by the promises of Master Preston. As time has gone by, Preston has become increasingly crueler to the point where Kenneth fears for his life. They’ve recently joined a sadomasochism club and Kenneth can’t help but yearn for the handsome Master the other boys speak so highly of—Master Saul.

Preston takes things too far one night, and when Saul and his good friend, Master Aaron, do some investigating, they realize that Kenneth might be in real danger. Amidst turmoil at the club over whether there should be rules to keep the boys safe and Preston’s play for power, Saul searches for a way to save Kenneth from what he’s sure is a deadly situation.

Both men fight for what they believe to be the right thing. When they find their way to one another, a wonderful new world opens up to them. But there’s one man out there who refuses to let go of the old ways. Kenneth is his property and Master Preston won’t give him up.

Reader Advisory: This book contains scenes of violence and dubious consent.

Publisher’s Note: This book is best read in sequence as part of a series but can be read as a standalone.

Review: I’ll be forthright and admit I did not read the first in the Hampton Road Club series, but I will go back and read the first one as I found this to be an enjoyable read. I’ve said before that I like historical romance, and I also enjoy BDSM novels. Usually BDSM novels fall under the contemporary genre for me, but I took a leap of faith and was rewarded with a good story and characters I sympathized with. As the publisher states, there is violence and dubious consent in the novel, as well as attempted rape, so if those are triggers for you, then the book might not be the best choice for you. There’s also a very healthy dose of BDSM. One of the main characters, Saul, is in his fifties, and Kenneth is in his thirties. So while it’s not the largest age gap I’ve read, it is still large enough for some people, so I think that’s fair warning.

Even though the publisher suggests reading the series in sequence, I don’t think it’s necessary. The first book is about Aaron and Sam, and while I want to know what happened to get them together, enough is explained that this book isn’t ruined. Also given that this is about Saul and Kenneth, Aaron and Sam are usually off to the side.

Reading about the BDSM culture is another time period was interesting for me, as I’m fairly versed in terminology and practices of today. How much is accurate in this book I can only guess, but I would assume the author did research. Terms like “safe word” don’t seem to exist except in earliest forms, nor do “hard limits” or “soft limits,” but again they are mentioned to a degree. So when did BDSM evolve to what it is today?

Saul is a strong character with secrets, and I enjoyed reading about him struggling to not get involved in Kenneth’s life when he belonged to another man. The club he is a part of makes a great backdrop for much of the story, and seeing him navigate his multiple roles in club life gave the novel that much more depth.

As for Kenneth, I felt for him. He’s a character that really tugs at the heartstrings due to his situation. He fell into the lifestyle at a very young age, and when his first dominant passed away, he fell in with another man without really thinking about who he was or what Preston could do for him. And there starts his life of hell. He’s different from the other submissives at the club which, like Saul’s part, added another layer to the story. Unlike the others, he’s not very young. Nor is he small. While he is physically larger and stronger than the others, his mental weakness is what makes him fall victim to Preston time and again.

There are some unattached characters in this book that would make great reads for the third book. My hope is for Thomas and Linus. They’re minor in this book, but what little is seen of them I like, and I would love to know their story.

Excerpt: “Officer, stop him—he’s getting away!”

Parker looked where the man pointed and noted what looked like a young man in goth-type clothing walking at a fast clip in the direction of Koval Lane. Parker jogged toward him, not sure what was going on, but the kid’s body language suggested that he was in a hurry to get away while at the same time trying not to attract attention himself.

Petty thief, druggie, rent boy.

Parker ticked off the possibilities in his head as he rushed to catch up to the suspect. Right as he was almost upon him, the guy glanced over his shoulder, his eyes widening in fear at the sight of Parker. He took off like a rocket.

Parker’s reflexes kicked in and he shot after the kid. No longer doubting that the runner was guilty of something, he put all he had into catching up to him. One of his biggest worries was that if the young man was into drugs or selling himself, his life would be at risk if he didn’t get help. If an arrest were to put assistance for him into motion, it would be worth whatever Parker had to do to nab him.

Right as his quarry rounded the corner to duck down a pathway to Bally’s hotel rooms behind the main casino, Parker launched himself forward. He grabbed the smaller man around his neck, their combined momentum knocking them both to the ground. Parker threw his free hand in front of them, hoping to keep his larger body from hurting the kid as they tumbled down.

A loud whoosh of air was wrested from the young man as Parker landed on top of him, and he knew he’d only been partially successful at keeping his weight off his suspect. The kid struggled and fought like a wild cat. Even though he was smaller than the guy Parker had just arrested, he was much more determined. There was a tinge of desperation in his efforts and pleas that clutched at Parker’s heart. He was genuinely frightened and somehow, it didn’t strike Parker as being caused by the fear of going to jail.

“Please.” His cries were muffled by their continued battle. “Let me go. You don’t understand. You have to let me go, man.”

“Stop resisting, son, you’re only making things worse for yourself.”

“I’m not your son, you fucker! And nothing could be worse…” It sounded as if he had strangled down a sob as his voice had trailed off. “Nothing.”

His body went limp as if in defeat. Parker hauled him up to a standing position, using one hand to clutch his collar and the other to grip his arm. The boy winced.

“Are you hurt?”

Deep blue eyes lined in black stared up at him, defiant. But behind that façade was a deep sadness that threatened to crush Parker’s heart even more.

“What the fuck do you care?”

He’d tried to make his voice sound cocky, tough. Parker was used to the attitude he received from the various lawbreakers he interacted with on a daily basis, but he still felt as if there was something different about this one. It wasn’t his job to interfere with individuals, only to bring them in—and when appropriate—offer relevant social services information. Personal involvement was off limits.

“I care more than you probably think.”

Author BioAbout the Author: M/M Erotic Romance author Morticia Knight enjoys a good saucy tale – after all, who doesn’t? Since she loves several genres, you may find your heroes in a contemporary, historical, paranormal or sci-fi setting. One of her passions is bringing people’s fantasies to life on the page, because life is too short for even one boring moment. Her stories are volcanic in heat, deep in emotion, and sprinkled with doses of humor.

When not indulging in her obsession for books, she loves the outdoors, film and music. The Pacific Northwest is the ideal spot to enjoy both hiking and beachcombing. Once upon a time she was the singer in an indie rock band that toured the West Coast and charted on U.S. college radio. She now resides on the northern coast of Oregon, where the constant rain and fog remind her of visits to family in England and Scotland when she was a child.

She is currently working on the Sin City Uniforms Series and a BDSM spin-off to the Gin & Jazz series entitled The Hampton Road Club. A follow-up to Bryan and Aubrey’s story in Rockin’ the Alternative will also be available in 2015 through Totally Bound Publishing.

Review: Rockin’ the Alternative by Morticia Knight

Title: Rockin’ The Alternative

Author: Morticia Knight

Publisher: Totally Bound

Pages/Word Count: 60 pages

Rating: 4 Stars

Blurb: The chance of a lifetime and the touch of a rock god are offered to music journalist Bryan Gallagher on the same day. Embracing one is easy, but resisting the other is harder than he’d anticipated—especially since Bryan has never been with a man.

It could be his dream assignment. Aubrey King, the legendary god of alternative rock music has requested to meet with journalist and writer Bryan about penning the star’s memoir. Aubrey and his dark, angsty songs are the reason Bryan was inspired to become a leading rock journalist. His obsession for his career has alienated the women in his life, but Bryan doesn’t care. What really matters to him is the music.

Aubrey King has been out of the music scene for almost ten years—ever since his alternative rock band, Falling in Stereo, broke up. Questions about his sexual preferences have always surrounded him, and now that he’s ready to make a solo comeback, he wants to tell his story, his way. He’s followed journalist Bryan Gallagher’s career for a while and believes that Bryan’s obvious passion for music mirrors his own. He loves his writing style, but is also enraptured by the boyishly handsome writer.

Bryan finds pushing his fanboy nervousness aside is difficult when Aubrey finally stands before Brian. He’s amazed at how little Aubrey has changed—his intense gaze, his unique style and his still youthful looks epitomize the star he’s always been. But Aubrey’s vulnerability when he sings and shares the deeply personal lyrics of a new song triggers something in Bryan that he never knew was there. The need to give himself to Aubrey, to let the rock god do to him what he’s never before desired a man to do.

Review: Rockin’ The Alternative is a short story of around 60 pages. I’ll admit that I usually stay away from stories this short because it can be hard to develop a connection with the characters. I did not have that problem with this story though. Bryan immediately jumped off the page as someone I’d be friends with in real life because of our mutual love of music. When he gets the chance to interview one of his idols, he flips between utter fanboy and trying to be professional.

Aubrey King is looking to jump back into the music scene, but it’s been 10 years, and he’s got a little bit of a story to share first. He’s also orchestrated Bryan interviewing him, as he’s followed his writing career for a while. Oh yeah, he’s also very attracted to Bryan even though he’s never met him in person.

This is a story that even though it happens in a very short timeframe, the couple just worked. Between their love of music, their own vulnerabilities, and the attraction that’s almost instantaneous, even though Bryan considers himself straight, they connect and simply work. There is a lot of sexy heat between these two characters; enough that I wished the story had been a full length novel.

Rockin’ The Alternative is a novella you need to give a try because you’ll be surprised how much you like the characters. If you love your rockers, or are a music geek, fanboy, or fangirl, I can’t recommend this story enough.

Blurb: Police officer, Zach and Fire Marshal, Daryl would be perfect together—if they would ever quit fighting long enough to find out. A devastating fire and the secret behind it almost keeps them from getting what they really need—each other.

When a mutual friend suggests Fire Marshal Daryl, Zach assumes he must be joking. The surly marshal has given cranky a new meaning. It’s unfortunate, since he is one fine-looking man.
