Blurb:  Young mechanic Andrew Campbell’s life couldn’t be better. He is about to restore a Ford Mustang with his dad before heading off on the ultimate cross-country road trip with his best friend, Tanner McKenzie.

But tragedy strikes, and Andrew’s life is shattered. Worried his family will be torn apart if he doesn’t step in, Andrew makes a tough choice between following his heart and doing what he needs to do to protect his little brother.

When Andrew pushes Tanner away, Tanner heads off on the planned trip alone. Once Tanner leaves town, his life takes a different path, and it’s ten years before he returns. Now a firefighter, he’s never forgotten his first love, and no one has ever taken Andrew’s place in his heart. He’s determined to see if Andrew feels the same way. He just hopes Andrew’s excited to see him, hopes that he’s available—and finally out—after all this time.

They might not have been ready to deal with emerging feelings years ago, but now might be the time for their second chance at love.

Review:  It wasn’t long ago that I got to read and review Charlie’s Hero by Nic Starr, which I loved.  It was the first book I had read by this author, and I couldn’t wait to read more, so you can imagine how excited I was when Andrew’s Promise came up for review.  We got a quick glimpse at Andrew and Tanner in the first book, which made the wait for this book a little brutal (and I honestly didn’t have to wait that long, but it sure felt like it).

In this book we get a lot of back story; we learn more about Andrew and Josh’s dad, go through what happened when he passed away, and what ultimately happened between Andrew and Tanner that has kept them apart for the last ten years.  I have mixed feelings about all the backstory.  Do I think it made me understand things better? Yes, I felt closer to the characters, it answered all kinds of questions and, like the first book, it is wonderfully written. So, why mixed feelings? Well, it’s not that I thought there was too much backstory, because I enjoyed it, but I really would have liked more of them present day than we got.  And not that the present day part of the story was really lacking in any way, I think maybe I am just greedy and wanted more, which I guess, depending on how you look at it, isn’t necessarily a bad thing. :)

In the end we are left with a happy, loving couple, and a wonderful segue for the next book (which I will of course be impatiently waiting for)!

Road Trips

Hi. Nic Starr here. Thanks for having me visit as I release my latest novel, Andrew’s Promise. Andrew’s Promise is a story about dashed dreams and second chances. It’s about making sacrifices.

If you read Charlie’s Hero, the first book in the series, you’d know Andrew gave up on his dreams, everything accept having his little brother by his side. One of his dreams had been to restore a Mustang and take a road trip across the USA with his best friend, Tanner.

Although Andrew’s Promise isn’t a road trip book, I had a lot of fun checking out road trips. There are some great sites on the web, and did you know Pinterest was full of road trip images? Just checking out the maps and photos made me add a US road trip to my bucket list. *crosses finger to win the lotto*

I live in Australia where we are blessed with a beautiful country—it’s huge with tremendous variation in the landscape. I’ve been lucky enough to see the arid Red Centre, venture into ancient forests, drive through miles of rural countryside and drive along endless stretches of coastline with the glorious beaches and amazing reefs.

One day I hope to see more of the world. I’d love to venture through Europe, safari in Africa, and do that USA trip. In the meantime, I’m allowing my characters to live my dreams which is nearly as good. (okay, not really *wink*)

I hope you are inspired by some of the books you read and find something exciting to add to your own bucket list.

Happy reading,

Nic xx

Blurb:  Schoolteacher Charlie Matthews returns to his hometown, looking to regain a sense of community, reconnect with friends, and settle down. It looks like his dreams have come true when paramedic Josh Campbell attends an accident at the school. It’s love at first sight, and a romance begins.

But Josh’s reluctance to come out to the brother who raised him, puts pressure on their fledgling relationship. While Charlie understands Josh’s concerns, he can’t help growing impatient. After all, Charlie came out years ago.

It’s not until Charlie confronts his own parents and realizes he hasn’t come to terms with their rejection that he fully understands what Josh has to lose. But Josh is Charlie’s hero, and Josh will do anything to prove to Charlie that to be part of a family, he doesn’t need his parents.

Review:  Seriously?!? How could you not love these guys? And not just the main characters, Charlie and Josh, but the secondary characters are all pretty awesome too (well, except Charlie’s parents, who just suck)!

Honestly, some of my favorite parts of this book were Charlie’s conversations with Greg, and some of the interactions with Charlie and Andrew and Josh and Andrew.  And I did kind of love Simon too! Josh was so sweet and shy and scared. He wanted to just be himself, and felt sad and scared and guilty that he wasn’t when it came to his brother. It was sad and frustrating to watch him struggle, but it was because of watching this struggle that we got to see how patient and understanding Charlie is.

Charlie knew from the moment he saw Josh that they could be something special together, and although he did get frustrated at times, after seeing Josh’s parents he realizes exactly why Josh is so hesitant to open up to Andrew—because of what he stands to lose.

I love to see stories that show a family isn’t always just blood, but is about those you choose to have in your life that will be with you through anything and stand by you and love you unconditionally.  Although throughout this book Tanner is mentioned only a few times, and we don’t actually meet him (well, not technically), I can’t wait for book two to find out Andrew and Tanner’s story!

Adding a Dash of Culture

Often my characters are doing the things most of us do—eating out, playing sport, listening to music, catching up with friends. They play computer games, watch movies and attend concerts. Sometimes I like to remove them from their comfort zone and get them to try something a little different.

Take Charlie and Josh, from Charlie’s Hero, for instance. They aren’t really into classical music, but Charlie gets some free tickets to a concert so he asks Josh on a date. Neither of them know what to expect. Charlie’s wants to make a good impression in front of Josh, so he researched the etiquette for attending a classical concert (isn’t Google wonderful for this sort of stuff?) but Josh had no idea.

I drew on my own experience when capturing Josh’s response to the concert – the atmosphere, the other patrons, the music, the overall experience.  My husband loves the symphony. So much so, that he subscribes to the Sydney Symphony Orchestra. To be perfectly honest, it’s not really my thing. I go every now and then but usually he finds someone else to take. I much prefer getting escort duty and accompanying my teenage daughters to their type of concerts. :)

I do have one favourite piece of classical music. It’s Marche Slave by Tchaikovsky. Click here if you want to check it out on YouTube.

You might also be interested in checking out a more modern orchestral piece. It’s what I’m listening to as I write this post. This piece—click here—is Eclogue No.6 by Dirk Caber – just knowing it was written by Dirk makes it more interesting. :)

Will Charlie and Josh ever fall in love with classical music? If they’re anything like me, I don’t think so. However, it’s good to expand your horizons and enjoy something new. You never know unless you give it a try.

Happy reading,

Nic xx
