Christmas Carols

I love Christmas Carols. They’re a part of the brightness that makes Christmas a happy time for me. The lights, the brightly wrapped gifts, and the carols.

I have many favorites. I do love the religious classics like We Three Kings, and O Come All Ye Faithful. In Exelsis Deo and Hark the Herald Angels Sing. (An aside – my father’s name is Harold and when I was younger, I used to think the song was Hark the Harold Angels Sing and that my father had angels who sang stashed somewhere).

I also love the more secular songs. Songs like Winter Wonderland, Jingle Bells and White Christmas. Gospel songs like Go Tell It One the Mountain and Children Go Where I Send Thee.

I prefer the classic songs sung ‘properly’ with the classic tunes I grew up listening to. I enjoy new songs, too, and they have the added benefit of my not having expectations to how they are supposed to sound!

My all time favorite carol, though is the Huron Carol which was written in the 1600s in Canada by a missionary. The version I like best is sung by Tom Jackson. You can hear it on youtube:

‘Twas in the moon of winter-time
When all the birds had fled,
That mighty Gitchi Manitou
Sent angel choirs instead;
Before their light the stars grew dim,
And wandering hunters heard the hymn:
“Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
In excelsis gloria.”

Within a lodge of broken bark
The tender Babe was found,
A ragged robe of rabbit skin
Enwrapp’d His beauty round;
But as the hunter braves drew nigh,
The angel song rang loud and high…
“Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
In excelsis gloria.”

The earliest moon of wintertime
Is not so round and fair
As was the ring of glory
On the helpless infant there.
The chiefs from far before him knelt
With gifts of fox and beaver pelt.
Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
In excelsis gloria.

O children of the forest free,
O sons of Manitou,
The Holy Child of earth and heaven
Is born today for you.
Come kneel before the radiant Boy
Who brings you beauty, peace and joy.
“Jesus your King is born, Jesus is born,
In excelsis gloria.”

Three to Get ReadyBlurb: Single father Jack Jones is in dire need of a new nanny. His five year old son Nathan is legally blind, he has twin baby girls arriving in less than two months and the girl currently working for him is leaving at Thanksgiving to go home and continue her higher education. If Mannies Incorporated doesn’t come up with a viable candidate soon, he’s not sure what he’s going to do.

Dan Miller is on the hunt for a new job. He’s had some great placements with Mannies Incorporated, many as Manny to multiple birth families to get them over the hump. He even has experience with special needs children, so the job he’s interviewing for looks like it’s right up his alley.

When Dan arrives at Jack’s house, he discovers that this Jack Jones is his Jack Jones, the man he was in love with during college, and who broke up with Dan because Dan wanted children. Will Dan and Jack be able to put the past behind them and work together, or will their past keep them from having a future together?

Sean MichaelAbout the Author: Often referred to as “Space Cowboy” and “Gangsta of Love” while still striving for the moniker of “Maurice,” Sean Michael spends his days surfing, smutting, organizing his immense gourd collection and fantasizing about one day retiring on a small secluded island peopled entirely by horseshoe crabs. While collecting vast amounts of vintage gay pulp novels and mood rings, Sean whiles away the hours between dropping the f-bomb and pursuing the kama sutra by channeling the long lost spirit of John Wayne and singing along with the soundtrack to “Chicago.”

A long-time writer of complicated haiku, currently Sean is attempting to learn the advanced arts of plate spinning and soap carving sex toys.

Barring any of that? He’ll stick with writing his stories, thanks, and rubbing pretty bodies together to see if they spark.

TitleSafe Limits (Kiss of Leather: Book Two)

Author: Morticia Knight

Publisher: Pride Publishing

Pages/Word Count: 171 Pages

At a Glance: Strong follow-up to the first Kiss of Leather book.

Reviewed By: Jennifer

Blurb: The men from Kiss of Leather gather together to rescue a terrified young sub. But it’s Master Derek who wants to keep him for good.

Master Gavin and his boy, Kyle, are celebrating their newly established bond when Master Josh calls requesting their help. Josh’s sub, David, needs the men to help his best friend from childhood while they’re away at a BDSM convention in San Francisco.

Corey ran away from his Master after a horrible scene, but he blames himself for everything that happened. No Master would ever want him if they were to find out what he did. Corey’s not sure if he’ll ever feel safe enough to give himself to a Master again anyway, even if all he’s ever wanted was to belong to somebody.

Master Derek agrees to watch over Corey until Josh and David return from the convention. All he needs is another pretty twink messing with his head and his heart, so the older, growly bear of a man determines to keep his distance. But when Corey wakes up screaming after a devastating nightmare, Derek is more drawn than ever to the young sub—the need to keep Corey safe from whatever or whoever has hurt him becoming his main priority.

Kyle and Corey develop a friendship when Corey assists Kyle in the dungeon furniture workshop. Kyle has his own fears—the ones that make him feel he’s broken because of the things he desires to do with Gavin. Through helping Kyle and receiving his own help via Derek, Corey decides he’s ready to let go of the demons from his past and move forward into a new life.

Now if Corey can only get Derek to believe that he’s ready—and to finally do something about it.

Reader Advisory: This book contains a flashback scene of rape by multiple aggressors.

Review: I’ve been a fan of Morticia Knight since reading The Hampton Road Club series, which is BDSM historical fiction. Love it. And I loved the first Kiss of Leather book as well, so when I saw this book came out, I knew I had to read it to see what happened with the club and the men involved.

Before I start the bulk of the review, I will say that this is a series you need to read in order. While the meat of the story involved Derek and Corey, and doesn’t require prior knowledge of the first book, the first chapter is about Gavin and Kyle, and it’s set immediately after the events of book one. I’d also recommend maybe going back to reread the last chapter of book one if it’s been a long time, or if you can’t remember what happened with those boys.

That said, once Corey is safely deposited with Derek, they are the focus of the story, but in order to get there, Kyle and Gavin need to be present.

Corey is a friend of David, and when he gets into trouble, he calls David for help. Of course, David will do anything to help his friend, so, being out of town himself, he enlists the other people he trusts—Gavin, Kyle, and Derek—to help Corey out until he and his Master, Josh, get back. Having had a Dom who hurt him, Corey struggles to trust anyone. He shies away from Kyle and Gavin, and when he sees Derek for the first time, he’s intimidated. Not only is Derek huge and his body language screams Dom, but to Corey he’s gorgeous.

Derek doesn’t really have time for a sub. He’s drawn to young, pretty twinks, and Corey is all that and more. But, he doesn’t want to get involved with someone again, especially not when that person is coming out of a relationship he refuses to talk about. One that has clearly left him afraid. Derek doesn’t even know if the man wants another relationship with a Dom, and not having BDSM in his life is a deal breaker for him. When Gavin and Kyle leave Corey with him, the two have to figure out how to navigate around each other and come to terms with their mutual attraction.

What I love most about Morticia Knight is her ability to create such deep characters. Not one of her characters is alike, and each story is different from the last. While they might have some things in common, that’s what makes them great friends rather than too similar to be interesting. Derek is a gentle giant who likes to work on his Harley. Corey isn’t too sure about wanting a fulltime D/s relationship, unlike Kyle and David, and he loves how big, hairy, and protective Derek is. The insight into Derek’s past is interesting. Readers learn he used to wrestle, and that he has anger management issues. While that might seem like a bad combo for a Dom, he’s fully in control with subs, and his anger stems from people taking advantage of others.

If you’re a fan of Ms. Knight’s writing, I recommend this series, especially if you like her Hampton Road Club books. I eagerly await the next installment! I’m hoping for Marshall, since he was conspicuously absent from this book. Fingers crossed!

And now, here are Bailey and Peyton Hollingsworth.

Dividers

Peyton is a funny, loving, 11-year old boy who loves playing outside, riding go-carts, and Batman. In April, we found out he had cancer. Peyton has asthma, and often had to have nebulizer treatments, so when he was having trouble breathing, his doctor thought it was asthma. But nothing worked to ease his breathing, and the doctor sent Peyton to the hospital for a suspected collapsed lung.

From one day to the next, it went from us thinking he had a severe bout of asthma to finding out that he had a tumor pressing his lung up until it was almost completely obscured, and he couldn’t get much, if any, air into it.

Peyton was sent to St. Jude’s and diagnosed with Ewing’s Sarcoma. The mass was attached to one rib, and was spreading. He has undergone radiation, surgery, and chemotherapy, several transfusions and MRI’s, numerous tests and received numerous shots. It’s been a rough, rough time for the Hollingsworth family, and we are hoping to help them out.

While St. Jude’s doesn’t charge for treatment, the Hollingsworth family has accumulated medical bills from Peyton’s doctor and hospitalization before he was sent to St. Jude’s. Cherri, his mother, has been unable to work during this time, and the financial constraints are something they could really use help overcoming.

We are currently awaiting another MRI to be scheduled and done to see if all the cancer has been eradicated. We are hopeful and have faith that Peyton will be in remission and the cancer will not have spread or reoccur.

Peyton

Yep, you guessed it! We were in the hospital in isolation right up till the day of Halloween, but he was still a trooper and St.Jude is awesome at making Halloween a big event for all the kids. All the nurses and doctors dress up and decorate every floor of the hospital in different themes. Solid Tumor which is our floor did Mario Cart and Peyton went as Sub Zero. Pictured with Pdog is Sommer, one of our favorite nurses.

Q&A With Bailey

Q: Bailey, is there a character in your books that you can’t stand? (Antagonist for example) And what makes them someone you don’t like?

A: I have a list of them. Most of the characters I can’t stand are hateful, greedy, and have delusions of grandeur.

Q: Are there misconceptions people have about your genre?

A: I can’t speak for anyone else; people will think what that will. I can say that there are many wonderful people in this genre, readers, authors, publishers, beta readers, editors, publicity people, and more. I have never met such a great group of people. I focus on that, rather than anything negative.

Q: Is there message in your novel that you hope readers grasp?

A: Most of my stories contain a redemption theme, that’s a big one for me. In this one, it’s not about redemption, however, it’s about healing, and finding your strength.

Q: How has your writing evolved since your first book?

A: Oh, goodness, it’s evolved in many ways. I like to think it’s improved :D

Q: One food you don’t care if you never eat it again.

A: Again, I have a list, lol. I’m a picky eater, and I don’t eat beef, chicken, pork…I’ll eat fish, sometimes. But I will never, ever eat wasabi again. Ick. Give me the hottest hot sauce available and okay. Wasabi? No.

Destined PreyBlurb – Destined Prey: All Jack Tucker wanted was to come home for a little while and try to figure out where his life had gone wrong. Moving from Wyoming to New York hadn’t turned out the way he’d thought it would, and a bad breakup leaves him bruised in more than just the emotional sense.

He doesn’t expect to be glad he’s back on the Double T Ranch with his brother, Rhett, and he sure doesn’t expect to find the place crawling with coywolves, wolves, and coyotes. There seems to be some kind of animal-warfare going on, and he and Rhett are caught in the middle of it.

Coywolves—the hybrid of wolves and coyotes, hated by both, and more predatory than either. Add in the fact that all the battling species are shifters, and there’s bound to be trouble.

Ben Akers is part of his brother’s pack. The only coywolf shifters in existence, they find themselves under constant attack from wolf and coyote packs determined to make the Akers pack extinct. But coywolves don’t die out so easy, and when Ben’s life takes a surprising turn in the form of one sexy human named Jack Tucker, they’re both in for surprises, danger, and, if Destiny rules, an abiding love that most people—and shifters—only dream of.

Excerpt: Jack Tucker watched his brother retrieve the rifle from the gun cabinet in the office. “Um. Rhett? What’re you doing?”

Rhett didn’t even glance back at him as he loaded the gun. “What does it look like I’m doing? You been living in the city so long you forgot how a Wyoming rancher lives?” Then he did look over his shoulder at Jack, and Jack kind of wished he hadn’t.

He hated seeing that judgment in his brother’s eyes, and knowing he’d never be good enough for Rhett, never be the man his brother was. “No,” Jack mumbled, “I didn’t forget.”

Rhett sighed and turned until he faced Jack. “Look, that was uncalled for. I’m… I’m sorry, okay?”

Jack was so startled by the apology that he gulped and couldn’t think of a word to say.

Rhett grimaced. “Yeah. Well, okay. Gotta check on some tracks Eddie said he found leading from his property to ours. I’ll be back in a few hours.” He left, striding from the room without seeming to hesitate.

Jack groaned and closed his eyes. Of course Rhett didn’t hesitate—he never had. Rhett always knew what to do, and how to do it, and who he was, and that he was right… Except, he apologized to me, and it screwed my head right up.

“Worse than it already is,” he muttered. Jack couldn’t stop himself from touching his left side, where his bruised ribs throbbed as the pain meds wore off. He was lucky, very lucky, that Rhett hadn’t pushed him on the accident that had sent Jack running home from New York, and possibly into the unemployment line. His boss hadn’t been happy with Jack taking off, even with a medical note as an excuse. Jack hadn’t told Rhett much about any of that. As far as Rhett knew, Jack had fallen down some icy steps, and that was all he was going to ever know about the incident.

Jack replayed his brother’s apology in his head and somehow it mingled in with Alex’s. Cold fear trickled down Jack’s spine and his gut cramped hard enough to make him worry about the dinner he’d just eaten.

After several minutes of trying to calm himself down, Jack stood and left. He’d wanted to sit and talk with Rhett about finances and try to decide if he should offer to let Rhett buy him out. Jack wasn’t made to be a rancher. He wasn’t made to be a New Yorker, either.

Jack didn’t know what he was supposed to do in life, and at the age of twenty-seven, he kind of thought he should have an inkling.

His cell phone was ringing when he stepped into his bedroom. Without looking, he knew it was Alex calling. “Who else would it be?” he huffed. It wasn’t like he had any friends left.

Rather than check to see how many times Alex had called and how many texts he’d sent, Jack turned the phone off, then stuck it in the nightstand. He eased himself onto the bed, then took a couple of prescription pain meds and washed them down with the rest of the water he’d brought in earlier.

The glass was old and familiar, and he felt a pang of regret as he looked it over after he set it down. Green glass, nothing special about it, yet he remembered so much as he stared.

He could see his mom in the kitchen, fixing a pitcher of tea, talking to him, and listening as he told her about his day at school or the chores he’d had to do around the ranch. She’d always been so kind and understanding, Jack had to believe she’d have been okay with him being gay. He’d spent many afternoons in the kitchen, helping her prepare meals or just basking in her presence. Losing her had almost broken him.

For a few more minutes, he let his mind go back to happy childhood days. His dad wasn’t in nearly as many of those good memories, but Chauncey Tucker hadn’t been a bad man. His dad had been more like Rhett—stoic, focused on the ranch and less on the people around him.

Jack ran one finger around the rim of the glass. He was surprised, really, that there were any of the old things left.

The sound of gunshot startled him so badly he jerked and nearly sent the glass flying.

“Shit!” He winced as he pushed it back, then stood as quickly as he could manage.

Another shot rang out, then a third, and fear quickly overtook every other sensation he’d felt until then.

Rhett had always been an ace shot. If he’d had to use three bullets, then there was something bad outside—a bear or a whole pack of wolves.

Jack didn’t like guns, but he went and got one from the gun cabinet anyway. He loaded it as he walked to the front door, and hoped like hell Rhett wasn’t hurt.

As soon as he stepped outside, the fine hairs at his nape seemed to stand up and vibrate, like some kind of primitive survival instinct warning alert system. Jack froze, his back to the door as his heart slammed hard against his ribs.

Another shot sounded, and it jolted Jack into action. “Rhett! Rhett!” He rushed down the steps and toward the direction the shots had come from. “Rhett! Are you okay?”

When Rhett didn’t immediately answer, Jack ran, careless with the gun, aware of that but unable to make himself do anything other than find his brother as soon as possible.

“Rhett!” He stumbled over something on the ground and almost fell before he managed to flail enough to keep himself upright.

Pain tore down his injured side, but he ignored it as he called out for his brother yet again. He cursed himself for not thinking to grab a flashlight. The sky was overcast and there was no moonlight to assist him in his search, and once he was past the barns there was no light coming from the house or other structures, either.

Jack realized that the cattle in the closest field were making enough noise to drown out his voice or Rhett’s, making it impossible for them to hear each other.

The sounds of the gunshots must have scared the cattle. Jack worried about a stampede, but he’d never seen any of the critters take out a fence, so he dismissed the idea.

“Rhett!” His throat burned as he hollered again.

Lightning streaked across the sky, blinding Jack for a moment, then thunder followed and he couldn’t contain his startled yelp as his ears rang from the sound.

Or his shriek when six pairs of glowing yellow eyes appeared between him and the fence line.

“Shit!” Jack skidded to a halt and hoped he could steady his hands, and force himself to do what he had to do.

Excerpt: Watching Will’s face turn pink then red was extraordinarily entertaining. I nudged his elbow playfully and tried to gain control of my smile before it threatened to take over my entire face.  When I couldn’t take the building pressure of emotion, I winked at the girls then leaned in and kissed his lips, loving that I took him by surprise.  The elevator doors slid open a moment later.  Will stepped into the empty corridor and gave me a wide-eyed incredulous stare.

“I cannot believe you just did that.”

“What? Kissed you on an elevator?  It’s not like farting, ya know.”

Will huffed a sigh that clearly said he thought I was hopeless before turning to walk down the hall.  “I was talking about the underwear comment but yeah, the kissing part was awkward too.  No one wants to watch two people going at in a confined space.  And besides, we’re supposed to be playing this strictly straight while we’re in public.”

He stopped to unlock the door to the classroom then pushed it open, pausing to give me a perturbed look before he moved inside ahead of me. I barked a quick laugh as I set my guitar on the back table and shrugged my jacket off.

“First of all, that was hardly going at it.  It was a peck. You were the one advertising I left my clothes at your place in front of a couple cute girls.  And who said anything about playing straight?”

“Were we not in the same room two mornings ago talking about this?”

“We were.  In fact, we were naked in your bed.  Decidedly un-straight. But the way I remember it, I was one who was holding back the gay while you were the one going for it.  But let’s go back to the elevator. I think you purposefully blew my cover back there with those girls.  Were you jealous?”

He snorted and rolled his eyes.  “You’re unbelievable.”

“Thanks.”

“It wasn’t a compliment,” he quipped as he made his way to the piano.

“Well, the next time you announce you’re holding my underwear hostage in a crowd, all bets are off, baby.” I gave him a lascivious once-over and waggled my eyebrows before tightening the strap on my guitar.

Will chuckled.  “I’ll keep that in mind. But I’m pretty sure your tighty-whities never came up. My comment was perfectly innocent. There’s a big difference between hats and underwear.”

“I’m on to you, Will.  You wanted those girls to know something’s going on between us.  They’re probably talking right now.  Bet they’re wondering if we’re in here having sex.  Hell, they could be outside that door listening.  Maybe we should give ‘em something to talk about.” I made a show of unbuckling my belt and the top button on my 501s.  “Is there a camera in this room?”

“Keep your pants on. I’ve got two months left till graduation and I’d prefer not to get kicked out of school, please,” Will said primly, smacking my hand away.

“You won’t get kicked out.  I doubt we’d be the first anyway.”

I rezipped my jeans and started to back up, but at the last second, I reached out to cup his chin between my thumb and forefinger.  I traced his jaw and let my thumb roam higher to caress his cheekbone just under his glasses. His eyes fluttered shut.  I loved the contrast of his fair skin and darker lashes and eyebrows.  He was so damn pretty.  And those lips.  They were sensuous.  That was the word. I leaned in and brushed my nose against his.  I could feel his breath on my lips.  The urge to plunge my tongue inside and take what I was very sure we both wanted was strong, but I waited for his permission.

When he didn’t respond, I let my hand fall to my side and started to pull back.  Maybe he really was serious about propriety in the classroom. I wasn’t used to curbing my impulses to suit someone’s else’s sensibilities. I’d spent twenty-five years doing only what I wanted.  Screw anyone else.  Now here I was, attempting to hide my gay side publicly while trying to follow Will’s lead in private. It felt strange, I thought, just as Will launched himself at me.

I grunted in surprise when he wrapped his arms around my neck and crashed his mouth over mine. He softened the connection and tilted his head as he raked his fingers through my hair.  I responded but let him control the tempo. Until he tentatively licked my lips. Fuck, he tasted sweeter than I remembered. Like peppermint candy or hot chocolate.  I pulled him flush against my chest and slid my tongue alongside his, twisting and colliding in a passionate fusion.  When he gasped for air I pulled back only to have him grind his hips into mine and lick my jaw. He swayed into me with a moan and lost his footing.

“Steady there.”

Will was sexier than he knew, which spelled potential danger for me.  It was better to let the music take over for now.

Guest Post and Giveaway: The Couple Next Door Blog Tour with Rick R. Reed

Rick Banner

Hi, Rick, thanks so much for being with us today to chat about your new novel The Couple Next Door. It’s always great to have you here for a visit.

And it’s always great to be here! I’m so excited to share my new release with you guys and your readers! THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR is certainly a roller coaster of emotions—mysterious, romantic, thrilling, and ultimately a love story about overcoming almost impossible odds to be together.

There are two things that leap out at us readers in the blurb for the book, the first being that it deals with the subject of domestic violence. Do you feel that domestic abuse of men is more prevalent than we may realize, and how did you come to the decision to tackle such a weighty subject?

I do feel that domestic abuse of men is a very real and prevalent thing. Studies show that it occurs as often in LGBT relationships as it does in straight ones.

As I’ve said before, when I write a book, I am completely a pantser. What that means, if you don’t know, is that I write pretty much from the seat of my pants with a general idea of the story and the plot arc. It’s my characters that really take me on a journey. When they become real in my head, which is a necessity for me, they consistently lead me to new and unexpected places, which is part of the joy of creation for me.

With THE COUPLE NEXT DOOR, my first image of the two men who would become my love interests in the story was one of domestic violence. Often it’s a simple image that comes to me and shapes how I write the rest of the book. In this case, I first had the idea of an almost light romantic comedy opening, when my main character, Jeremy, comes home from yet another disappointing date. Then I do a 180 and throw the reader into shocking territory—he sees a man flinging another man down the front stairs of Jeremy’s apartment building. Here’s the scene:

I open the front door, and that’s when everything changes. My life turns upside down. I go from bored discontent to panic in a split second.

The first thing I hear is someone shouting “No!” in an anguished voice. I look up from the lobby to see two figures on the staircase above, on the second-floor landing. One is a guy who looks menacing and so butch he could pose for a Tom of Finland poster. An aura of danger radiates from him. Aside from his imposing and muscular frame, he’s even wearing the right clothes—tight, rolled jeans and a black leather biker jacket with a chain snaking out from beneath one of the epaulets. His high and tight buzzed hair gives him a military—and mean—air. He has his hands on the shoulders of a guy who looks a bit younger and much slighter, making me want to call up the stairs, “Why don’t you pick on someone your own size?” The smaller guy, blond and clad only in a pair of pajama bottoms, struggles with his attacker, looking terrified. Their movements, clumsy and rough, would be comical if they weren’t so scary. The smaller guy is panting and batting ineffectually at the bigger one.

“Please! No! Don’t!” the smaller guy manages to get out, his voice close to hysteria.

I have never seen either of these men before. In fact, the whole scene has the quality of the surreal, a dream. The danger and conflict pulsing down the stairs makes my own heart rate and respiration accelerate, causing feelings of panic to rise within me.

And then the worst happens. The big butch guy shoves the smaller one hard, and all at once he’s tumbling heavily down the stairs toward me.

The fall is graceless, and it looks like it hurts. It’s over so fast that I’m left gasping.

I look up to see the leather-jacket guy sneer down at his mate, lying crumpled and crying at my feet, and then turn sharply on his heel to go back into a second-floor apartment that had been vacant yesterday. He slams the door. The sound of the deadbolt sliding into place is like the report of a shotgun. Both slam and lock resound like thunderclaps, echoing in the tile lobby, punctuation to the drama and trauma of this short scene.

I switch into Good Samaritan mode and drop to my knees at the sniveling, crumpled mess of a man lying practically at my feet.

That scene brought out the nurturer in me, as well as my main character, Jeremy. I hope it brings out the same sense of protectiveness in readers and will make them want to root for Shane, however mysterious he may be on the surface.

It was interesting for me to get inside the heads of all three players in this triangle of abuse, the protector, Jeremy, the protected, Shane (and he has all the low self-esteem earmarks of the abused, often blaming himself for the abuse instead of his abuser), and the man with whom Shane lives, a very enigmatic figure to say the least.

How does all of this plays out and how it results in a very poignant and real love story? I leave that for the reader to discover…

The second thing that stands out, then, is that Cole may display signs of multiple personality disorder—or, at least he’s more than just Cole. Was it fun to write a character who presents so atypical in personality? How easy or difficult was it to get in Cole’s headspace, and what did you do to prepare yourself for letting loose your darker side?

It was really interesting writing a story that had elements of multiple personality disorder, or dissociative identity disorder, as it’s called today. It was fun, in an evil way, to write Cole/John/Vera because the character is so multi-faceted and so enigmatic. Is he good but damaged? Or is he evil and plotting? These are the kind of questions I think readers will be scratching their heads and asking about him as they wind their way down the twisted pathways of my story. There are plenty of switches and shocking revelations, so that once a reader is comfortable with who they think Cole/John/Vera might be, I pull the rug out from under them. That might seem cruel, but this is the kind of book I like to read—one that has an element of romance, but one that keeps me turning the pages so that I can discover what happens next. I think readers will be surprised by the twists and turns the story takes, especially where Cole/John/Vera is concerned. As the tag line says on the cover, “Things aren’t always as they seem.”

This would be a good time to give a shout out to readers and reviewers and plead with them: PLEASE DO NOT REVEAL ANY SPOILERS. This book, more than any other I’ve written, has unanticipated twists and turns that I hope readers can come to without expectation, so they can have the appropriate emotional reaction.

As far as letting loose my dark side…. Well, it doesn’t get nearly enough play. When I write, this is my chance to let out my twisted side, the one people who’ve met me are always surprised that I have. After all, I’m so quiet, mild-mannered, and a real sweetheart. Right?

Jeremy would never go after another man’s boyfriend, so he reaches out to Shane in friendship while suppressing his feelings of attraction. But the feeling of something being off only begins with Cole being a hard-fisted bully—it ends with him seeming to be different people at different times. Some days, Cole is the mild-mannered John and then, one night in a bar, he’s the sassy and vivacious drag queen Vera.

So how can Jeremy rescue the man of his dreams from a situation that seems to get crazier and more dangerous by the day? By getting close to the couple next door, Jeremy not only puts a potential love in jeopardy, but eventually his very life.

Excerpt from Silent Lodge: Arvel sighed, stretched, and opened his eyes. He looked around, saw Peter, and smiled. It lit his face and went to his eyes, a sincere joy that took his breath away.

Peter had returned to him.

Again, the little bird’s wings danced in his belly and sent a warm rush of happiness through Arvel.

He hushed them and told himself to not be a fool.

Of course Peter came back. He had to come back, but not for Arvel. He’d returned to sleep in the bed, to keep his horse, to eat his meals.

Time to get to work and stop his wild thoughts.

“Ho, Arvel.”

Arvel brought his hand to his mouth, head tilted.

“Aye, I’m hungry.”

Nodding, he hurried to the sideboard and began pulling vegetables and dried meat from the larder. He swept down a knife from the shelf and began chopping. Once done, he came back to the hearth, pushed the logs around with the poker, arranging the fire to cook over, then swung out the iron cook pot and took it to the table.

******

Peter sat  mesmerized by the dance, the lithe form swaying and gliding, moving to some unseen rhythm.

All the pieces were added to the pot, and then brought back to the fire, hung on the hook, and pushed over the flames.

Arvel went back to the table, brought out flour, and started making bread.

Peter relaxed, watching the younger man prepare the evening meal. Lost himself in the push and pull of Arvel’s hands on the dough, working it into the right consistency, twisting it and then kneading again. Peter lost track of the time; the lodge had no windows, only the front door and a side door that led to the stables.

Arvel finished kneading the bread, formed it into a loaf, and placed it on a wide, flat wooden paddle with a handle. Then he carried it to the side of the hearth. An oven had been built just to the side. He opened the door with the metal poker, slid the bread in, and jerked the paddle out. After shutting the door, he returned to the table to finish cleaning.

In no time, the bread’s smell and the aroma of the stew blended to fill the lodge and make Peter’s mouth water.

Arvel could cook, no doubt about that. And bake. And keep the lodge tidy, the stables clean and ready. Was there nothing the young caretaker couldn’t do?

Peter laughed. Arvel turned and caught him. His brow furrowed and head tilted.

“Pardon.” Peter stood and clapped Arvel on the shoulder. “You’re a right treat, Arvel.”

Arvel smiled, staring at Peter’s mouth.

Peter sobered and leaned in closer. “Is that how you do it? Do you see the words on my lips?” He reached out and touched Arvel’s mouth.

Arvel placed his hand over Peter’s, trapping it against Arvel’s lips, and nodded.

“So in a way, you can hear me.” Peter’s lips moved against Arvel’s fingers as he spoke. Arvel chuckled soundlessly and dropped his hand.

Peter let his hand linger for just a moment on those soft, pink lips, then removed it.

They stared at each other.

******

Little birds danced every time he looked into Peter’s eyes, just as with his Heart.

Arvel waited. It was best to wait; less painful also.

Peter leaned forward as Arvel’s lips parted. The birds took to the sky, rising up from his belly, through his throat.

Arvel swayed toward Peter, his lips parting, ready for the kiss.

Peter pulled back.

“My wife died.”

Arvel frowned and motioned at his mouth, making a circle that landed on his lips.

Slower, he said, “My wife died.”

Dead? Ah, there’s the source of his pain. So much pain in his bark-colored eyes. They matched his bark-colored hair. Peter reminded Arvel of a tree, strong limbs that would hold him safe and secure.

Arvel wanted to help Peter by taking away the pain. Wanted to make him feel happy and see him smile again. He liked when Peter smiled.

No doubt about it, Peter needed Arvel.

Arvel’s mouth formed a large circle, and his brows shot up. Then he frowned and stepped forward, encircling Peter’s waist. He leaned into Peter and squeezed, resting his head on Peter’s shoulder.

******

Peter’s breath caught, and he wrapped his arms around Arvel, holding the smaller man tight to him.

“I miss her so much,” Peter whispered. “So, so much.” His voice trembled, and he shook with the effort to keep the pain inside.

Arvel leaned back, looked up at him with tear-filled eyes as if he felt the same pain Peter felt, then nodded and buried his face against Peter again. He moved his arm up to Peter’s neck and clung to him.

Peter broke, coughing up great sobs, tremors shaking his body, as he held tight to the caretaker.

Arvel kneaded Peter’s shoulders, his neck, easing him, bringing him down from the tension-filled shudders, until Peter inhaled, exhaled, and steadied. He stepped back, releasing Peter, giving a shy smile, and wiping away his own tears.

Peter cupped Arvel’s face, ran his thumb over that plump bottom lip, then let him go.

“Shall we eat?” Peter gave the same signal he’d seen Arvel make before, fingers to his mouth.

Arvel grinned and nodded, then rushed to the table.

Peter pulled out the bench and sat, drying his face on his sleeve. He poured a goblet of water, drank it down, and poured another. Arvel placed the simmering pot of stew on the table and went back for the bread.

The hot loaf danced in his hands as he juggled it to the table, then speared it with the knife. Peter sliced it for them and took one piece as Arvel dished out the meal.

Lynn, tell us something no one else knows about your characters.

I never find pictures of what I think they look like. I know some authors find pics and say, “Ohh, this is X!” I like to keep my physical descriptions a little vague and concentrate on their personalities.

So when the cover artist finds a picture of a guy, I’m like, “Hey, that looks like him!” because I don’t have his image set in my head, other than like hair color or eye color.

Have you ever had writer’s block? How did you overcome it?

No. My motto is never sit down in front of a computer to write unless you know exactly what you’re going to write. I believe in thinking about a story, character, even a what if situation, and creating something from that first, then writing it down. So when I sit down to write, I write.

What I have experienced is disenchantment, sort of an ennui about writing. I believe when I get this way, it’s best to stay away, to do other things that refill the well of creativity. Sometimes it’s just catching up on my reading, or listening to music, or watching NetFlix. I take my mind off writing.

Inevitably, an idea hits me and I’m off again, thinking about a new book! And once I’ve thought through the story, the character, the what if, I’m off and writing.

What book you’ve written would you like to see made into a movie?

I guess to say all of them is sort of wrong, right? Actually, I’d love to see this series made into a BBC series – historical, costume, swashbuckling drama of these incredible gay men set in a deadly time, fighting for their love and lovers.

Do you work on an outline or plot or just let the story takes you where it wants to go?

I use a method that allows me to loosely plot, yet still not feel tied down to a plot. Here’s a spoiler – my stories end in a happily ever after. So yeah, the two main characters will be together in the end. It’s a romance. We all know how it’s supposed to end. That’s not the point, is it?

The fun, the excitement, is in the telling of the tale – how do they do it? How do they survive the hardship of life and love? How do they start off enemies, or best friends, or total strangers, and get together?

I know the end, but since I know the character inside and out, his/her goals, motivations, and conflicts, the plot builds itself. I discover the one thing the character wants most in the world, and I take it from them. Then he/she has to fight to get it back.

Rapid fire questions:

1 – Favorite meal – a Parkway roast beef po’boy, mayo, plenty gravy, on French bread, a Barq’s rootbeer, and an orchid cream vanilla snow ball from Plum Street. (only to be had in New Orleans)

2 – Favorite color – I love chocolate brown.

3 – Favorite ice cream flavor – Blue Bell’s Pralines ‘n Cream, or their Southern Blackberry Cobbler, or their Strawberry ‘n Cream

Excerpt: Staring at Steve’s sexy body decorated with the welts from the riding crop clarified for him whether he’d worry about dinner yet. He’d curl around Steve in bed for a while and wait for his lover to wake up. Then they could decide together.

Together. Best word ever.

Allistair spooned Steve, inhaling his masculine post-fuck scent. He’d make even more millions if he could ever bottle Steve’s delicious aroma. Then again, Steve was his. No one else could have any.

Steve stirred in his arms. “You did it again. Fucked me unconscious.”

Steve’s words were muffled by the pillow. Allistair splayed his hand over Steve’s belly then let it drift up to tweak a swollen nipple. He arched, hissing. It was the exact reaction he’d hoped for, Steve’s muscles rippling under his touch, a treat for his eyes.

Steve turned in his embrace. They held each other’s gaze, then stole slow, deep kisses from the other. Allistair swept his hands over Steve’s back, Steve returning the touch with caresses of his own. Allistair searched with his fingers for the slightly raised patches of skin where he’d left the marks on Steve’s flesh. As he discovered the warmer spots, he idly checked them for openings that would require an antibiotic cream.

“Mmm. Feels nice.”

Allistair had never met a man so hungry for pain. His cock tingled, twitching with interest. He had no intention of beating Steve anymore for the day, his lover was still coming down from the endorphin rush the last one had caused. But he couldn’t help the surge of arousal his handiwork always inspired. What made it more exciting was Steve’s response to it.

Q: Tell us about your book.

A: Dream God is essentially the aftermath of what goes down in Claimed by the Order. Aya is finally free from the Order, but they have to endure a trial with powerful gods pulling the strings. To give you an idea, the trial is a lot like a modern day rape trial. However, if they don’t win in court, Aya will be forced to return to Egypt where Seth will be waiting for him. To complicate things, Marduk and Akad are together, yet Aya is convinced that Marduk is his soul mate.

Q: How difficult was it to get into the main character’s head?

A: I generally don’t find any difficulties getting into a character’s head. However, if I switch from writing one book to writing another, sometimes I have to make a conscious effort to put the other book out of my head in order to get into the right mind set.

Q: Is this book a standalone or do you plan on visiting it again?

A: Dream God is not a standalone. I did some re-capping of book one, but anyone who reads it without reading Claimed by the Order is going to miss out on too much. So, I advise reading book one first.

Q: Why did you choose to write M/M stories?

A: I write M/M because it’s what comes naturally to me. I started writing M/M before I ever picked up an M/M book. I actually was quite surprised when I discovered how big the genre was and that most of the authors were female as well.

Q: Where do you find your inspiration?

A: I am mostly inspired by history and mythology, but there are also current events and popular TV shows that spark my imagination. With respect to characters, sometimes I see an image or meet someone who inspires the creation of a character. However, I develop most characters because they fit a character type that I need in the plot.

Dream God CoverBlurb: For the first time in three years, Aya is finally free, but with his freedom comes the pain of all he’s lost. Seeing Akad and Marduk together makes him realize how badly he has messed up. By betraying Marduk, he ruined his chance with the one god he desires more than anything.

Aya needs time to heal and put his world back together, but the trial against the Order looms over him. As the trial begins, Akad, Marduk, and Aya are ensnared in a web of jealousy, backstabbing, and cut-throat politics. Were they crazy to think they could stand up to the Order? If the gods of the Order can still rip their lives apart, their chances of receiving justice may be next to impossible. But if they fail to bring the Order down, Aya may never be free from their grasp.

Aya groaned into his pillow. He looked up just as his servant set a wooden bucket down near the foot of his bed. Steam rose off the water.

“Thank you, Elian.” Aya needed something to curb his frustration. After slipping his skirt down, he stepped out of it, and dipped his feet into the bucket. He closed his eyes, allowing Elian to wash him. Elian ran a warm cloth over his face, then his neck and his bare chest. His touch was sensual like that of a lover, and Aya let his mind wander to the times Marduk had touched him. Elian glided the cloth down his belly, and a shiver ran up Aya’s spine. Elian’s cloth finally brushed along his member, stroking and coaxing. Blood rushed to Aya’s head as Elian’s touch aroused all his senses. When Elian’s strong fingers slid between his buttocks, Aya’s body tensed, his heartbeat quickening. Elian had always tried so hard to seduce him as a boy, but Aya had never given in. Aya had dreamed of saving himself for his soul mate—a dream that had been shattered by Seth and the Order. It seemed ridiculous to continue denying himself a man’s touch, especially that of his gorgeous concubine.

“Please,” Aya said, unsure of what he was asking. Just the thought of Elian fucking him made the heat in him rise. He closed his eyes, imagining Marduk touching him and taking control of him. Thinking of Marduk while Elian stroked him didn’t seem right, but he longed to give his body over; he wanted to feel something. Aya had been like a monk since he’d escaped the Order.

“My Lord. Will you allow me to please you?”

Unable to speak the words, Aya nodded his assent. Elian immediately pushed him back on the bed and crawled on top of him. Though Elian was mortal, his forceful manner was enough to get Aya’s blood flowing.

“Tell me what you want,” Elian said, breathless.

Aya still couldn’t speak, but he knew what he needed. “Please… just fuck me.”

A smile spread to Elian’s lips as he pushed Aya’s legs up and pressed his hard cock against Aya’s exposed hole. Elian ran his hands up Aya’s torso and pinched his nipples hard as his dick slid in. Aya gasped while Elian opened him, driving his shaft deep into his passage until his balls were flush with Aya’s ass.

“Ah,” Aya groaned, clenching handfuls of bedding, anticipating what was to come next. It soon became apparent that Elian knew how to fuck. When the first thrust came, Aya’s entire body glowed with the intense sensation. He needed this. He needed to be fucked so hard that the breath was forced from his lungs, but while his servant’s cock battered him, his mind wandered. He was once again in the Oasis pool and Marduk was inside him, riding him slowly, making him feel something he’d never felt with another.

Elian’s cock slammed into Aya once more, jarring him from his daydream. Though Marduk had been angry with Aya, he hadn’t punished him with his cock; instead he’d made love to him, slow and sweet.

“Stop!” Aya ordered, and Elian paused midstroke. Aya couldn’t stop thinking about Marduk. He’d imagined that letting Elian fuck him would change things—that maybe he’d find some satisfaction, but Elian was so forceful. All Aya could think of was Marduk’s gentle touch, and how Marduk had made love to him. When Elian pulled out, Aya rolled onto his side. His chest tightened once more. He wanted to cry and pull out his hair. He needed Marduk. No one else would ever compare. No one would ever make him feel like Marduk had.

Safety in NumbersBlurb: “Bros stick together no matter what.”

When Chris and Liam made that promise, they had no idea how important it would become or how it would be tested in the most brutal way. Nine years later, their bond cemented in blood, that relationship is all they have to hold on to.

“No matter what happens, this friendship will be the one constant we can count on.”

When Billy and Owen made that promise, they knew exactly how dangerous the world could be. They survived prison by protecting each other and they survived freedom by holding that promise sacred. Now they want more than just to survive and they want it from the brothers whose bond is as strong as their own.

“We are stronger together than we’ll ever be apart.”

When Owen reaches his breaking point, Chris jumps at the chance to make things right for all of them. With the future in their grasp, will they realize their strength is in their numbers and finally become the family they crave?

Author’s Note: This is NOT a foursome, but the story of two couples that needed to be told together.

The Protector - Jessie G AuthorAbout the Author: Like many readers, the dream of being a writer has been with me a long time. After three decades of trying, I’d begun to doubt. Thanks to social media, I followed my favorite authors hoping to glean some words of wisdom as I pounded out half-formed ideas with alarming regularity. Two repetitive themes emerged: to be a great writer you must read a lot and your butt must be in the chair every day like it’s a job. The more you write, the easier it will be to write and the better you will be at writing. I took that advice to heart and write every day. With six published books to date, three series in the works and a full schedule of releases planned for the next two years, it’s been amazing to have made this dream my reality.

I am a firm believer in marriage equality, love at first sight, power dynamics and happily ever after. I’m a lover of strong secondary characters and series filled with families, biological or chosen. All are themes you’ll find throughout my books.

WP: Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Anna Butler,  author of Heart Scarab.

Hi Anna, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

AB: Hi! And thank you for hosting me today. I’m delighted to be here.

Heart Scarab is the second of the Taking Shield series, which charts the life and loves of Shield Captain Bennet. Taking Shield is both a sweeping sci-fi story (old school sci-fi with spaceships and lasers, aliens and handsome heroes) and an equally sweeping love story. I should warn you, though, that it isn’t a romance in the sense that it won’t be what most m/m romance readers would expect.

Thousands of years after an alternate-universe Earth went dark, the people of one of her colonies, Albion, are struggling in a war that’s probably unwinnable, against aliens called the Maess. Although humans have been fighting the aliens’ cyborg drones for over a century, they haven’t seen a real, organic Maess. Set against the war, is the love story between Bennet and Fleet Lieutenant Flynn. They meet in the first book, Gyrfalcon, but for various reasons theirs isn’t going to be an easy love. They meet and part several times before the end. In Heart Scarab, Bennet’s return after being declared missing in action, presumed dead, puts intolerable strain on his relationship with his long term partner, Joss, but paves the way for a reunion with Flynn.

As for me, I worked for the UK civil service for many years as a communications specialist, working on everything from marketing employment programmes to running an internal TV service. These days I’m concentrating on trying to make it as a writer, combining my love of old school science fiction and m/m themes. I live in London with my husband and our cockapoo, Molly. We’re currently house hunting, looking for a country retreat.

WP: Where do you find your inspiration?

AB: Telling you that Star Trek first whetted my appetite for science fiction probably gives my age away, but it’s true that the ground-breaking nature of Trek—the way it casually mixed the nations and races of Earth, for example—is a primary influence on me. I started watching and reading sci-fi avidly. Taking Shield is rooted in all the old school science fiction stories and series : Star Trek, Star Wars, BSG, Independence Day, Doctor Who. I grew up with those, with Heinlein’s and Clarke’s novels. So mostly I’m inspired by the idea of humanity coming up against an enemy they can’t fathom, and having to dig deep within themselves to find the skills and fortitude to survive.

But I think the series that influenced me most in terms of structuring the Taking Shield series is Babylon Five. I loved how so many small, seemingly random events and images came back, much later in the story arc, to show their significance. What B5 proved was that you don’t have to give everything away in the first book/episode/film. You can take time to build a world and its characters slowly and not hurry to wrap up everything neatly until the story itself is fully told. I’ve tried to use this method in the Shield series.

WP: When did you first consider yourself a writer?

AB: I can’t remember not being a storyteller, although writing them down came later. I’ve told/written stories since childhood, starting with the adventures of Jimpy, the soft-toy chimpanzee I took everywhere with me. I moved on to write fanfiction for many years, and although some people decry it, I found it a wonderful, safe place to hone the craft of writing.

I think I first considered myself a writer when I wrote my first long fanfiction that didn’t pander to the tropes and expectations of the fandom, and where I abandoned the usual hurt/comfort storyline for something that was more about exploring the characters and making them, and their motivations, the pivot for the plot. It was certainly a pivotal moment for me.

WP: Do your characters become like real people to you?

AB: Gosh, yes.

It starts early, when I’m first thinking about the character and who he is, where he came from and what he looked like. For the main characters I use a Character Analysis table, answering questions as diverse as how tall he is, what his favourite colour is, and how he deals with disappointment or setbacks—it takes time to complete, so I tend to use this only for the two main characters. By the end of that, the picture of the characters is pretty clear, and I supplement that on Pinterest by searching out images that match the picture in my head.

The important thing is to think about what the character’s faults are. I want them to be rounded human beings, not cardboard cutouts with a few personality traits attached to them. So Bennet, for example, doesn’t always realise how selfish he is, how much he expects things to go the way he’s decreed them to be, because he grew up with wealth and privilege and he doesn’t even think twice about being in command. Flynn’s selfish too, but he’s far more self aware about the devil-may-care attitude he has and how he uses it to keep people at a distance. Frankly, both of them can be jerks, even if the reason for it comes from different backgrounds and experiences.

By the time I start writing, I am usually be pretty clear about why he does (or doesn’t do) something. And I know a lot about them that won’t ever appear in the books, but are part of what’s made them who they are.

WP: If you weren’t a writer, what else would you like to have done?

AB: I’d have loved to have been an opera singer. I took singing lessons for years, but although I had a reasonable soprano voice, it had limited range and power. I’d never be able to hold the stage at Covent Garden! I still regret giving up lessons and concentrating on my career instead, but you can’t go back on things like that for a do-over. Unless you use your voice and practice constantly, it will fade away. Sadly, mine isn’t even the ghost of what it once was, so that door is closed for ever.

WP: What do you want your tombstone to say?

AB: “She had a lot of fun.”

Heart ScarabBlurb: Telnos is an unpleasant little planet, inhabited by religious fanatics in the festering marshlands and unregistered miners running illegal solactinium mines up in the hills. But the Maess want Telnos, and Shield Captain Bennet’s job is to get out as many civilians as he can—a task that leaves him lying on Telnos while the last cutter of evacuees escapes in the teeth of the Maess invasion.

Bennet is listed missing in action, believed dead on a planet now overrun by Maess drones. His family is grieving. His long-term partner, Joss, is both mourning and guilt-ridden.

And Fleet Lieutenant Flynn? Flynn is desolate. Flynn is heart-broken… no. Flynn is just broken.

Excerpt: “I’m in bed like a good little boy,” Simon called.

Edgar shook his head. When Simon started being a good little boy, he’d know the end of the world was nigh.

He wasn’t prepared for the sight that assaulted him when he stepped into his bedroom. Simon was sitting up in his bed with a stack of pillows behind him, wearing an ancient cardigan of Edgar’s over one of his T-shirts and a pair of reading glasses he must have found in the nightstand.

“What are you doing?” he asked Si.

“Working. What does it look like?”

“You’re wearing my glasses. And my sweater.”

“I was cold and it’s not like I’ve got clothes of my own here.”

“And the glasses?” Edgar asked.

Simon huffed. “So my eyes aren’t perfect anymore. I get my job done.”

Edgar pressed his lips together to keep from laughing. “I’m sure you do,” he said when he could trust himself to keep a straight face.

“You’re mocking me.”

“No, not at all.” But the laugh came through then. “You’re the deadliest man I know, and here you are looking like a teenage dork in oversized clothes.”

Simon shrugged. “I can’t kill people all the time.”

What did you say? Utnap-blah—who? I can’t even guess how to say that.

Utnapishtim is the Sumerian equivalent to Noah. You say his name like [oo t-nuhpish-tim]

When I started Sumeria’s Son, the platform I built the series on was the Epic of Gilgamesh. I built the origins and motivations from the ancient story. I know, like that was a shock. ^_^ Utnapishtim was one of the few humans who was offered immortality and a place in Dilmun.

To give you a bit of background Utnapishtim, here’s the down and dirty on the Sumerian deluge myth. King Enlil is fed up with all the noise of humanity and decided to get rid of them. If you have already read the blog post on Abzu and the Igigi War, I’m sure you recognize the common theme between the two stories.

Anyway, he sends out plagues, and famine, and drought which destroyed the world three times and yet the human race persevered. Little did Enlil know (until it was too late) that the humans had help from Enki. The humans procreated quickly and soon they were just as noisy as they were before. In a fit of frustration, Enlil calls a meeting of the gods and makes them vow not to help the humans. To get around that decree, Enki didn’t speak to Utnapishtim directly but spoke into a bed of reeds. What an old trick to tell someone without actually telling them. What do you mean? Utnapishtim over heard me musing aloud?

Utnapishtim followed the instructions and built a boat, loading his family, the village craftsmen, baby animals, and grains. The storm that Enlil caused was so awesome in power that the gods fled to Dilmun. The description of how Utnapishtim tested the lowering of the waters was very similar to that of Noah’s with the releasing of the dove, the swallow, and the raven. They left the boat and had a great party, making a sacrifice to the gods. When the gods cautiously ventured from Dilmun, they were chagrinned at Utnapishtim undying loyalty and faith in the gods and they granted him and his wife immortality and a place among the gods.

After Enkidu died, Gilgamesh went a little insane in his grief and keenly feeling his mortality he searched for his ancestor, Utnapishtim. Even though Gilgamesh was a demigod and long lived, he could die. Just as the gods Humbaba and Gugalanna had died, and his beloved Enkidu. He entered the gates of the Sun Road guarded by the scorpion men and traveled to Dilmun. Utnapishtim cautioned him to abandon his quest but still told him how to gather the plant from the riverbed. It didn’tdo  Gilgamesh any good because a sneaky snake came by while he rested and ate the plant. (Must’ve been a vegetarian snake.)

If you’re wondering if I brought Utnapishtim in as character, the answer would be no. But the story of Gilgamesh’s search is important. The story of the deluge was just for fun but gives you an idea of how the gods sometimes viewed humanity.

A huge thank you for allowing me to be a guest on the blog today! Excerpt: The other vehicles parked behind us. Corey spoke to my parents but I couldn’t hear what he said. My father nodded and headed towards the last vehicle, where the wounded had been loaded. Warriors surrounded our SUV before Corey opened my door. I didn’t want to leave the vehicle. If I did, then Tristan’s fate would be set in stone. Illogical, I knew, but the thought of stepping foot in that house without him was the point of no return. I’d never be able to undo anything that transpired today, as if I even had the power to accomplish something like that. Part of me knew I didn’t want to answer the questions that would eventually come.

What Saéna said kept returning to the forefront of my thoughts. Why was this not a time to grieve? The only reason could be that Tristan wasn’t lost, wasn’t dead. But I saw him buried and Ashur held onto me until there was no hope of saving Tristan from suffocating. My blood boiled at the memory and I breathed around the anger. She is tending him now. What did that mean? Who? Who was tending Tristan? How was I to look past my pain when I’d lost the brightest point in my life? When Brian was killed, even though we wouldn’t have bonded for years, I still felt the absence of his Flame. Tristan and I had bonded last night and… and… wait.

Hey y’all! I’m BA Tortuga, resident redneck. I’m madly in love with my wife, Julia, I’m a romance writer, and I’m an unrepentant believer in happy endings. I’ve been publishing for more than fifteen years and I write cowboys of every kind.

The Articles of Release is the story of Eric Tremaine, a soldier that was wounded overseas and is in the midst of a medical discharge. He’s depressed, worried and alone, and when he calls his old Army buddy, Adam Winchester, he’s grateful that Sage and Win have a guestroom to offer him. When he meets personal trainer, Eric, who has challenges of his own, he discovers that maybe he’s not done living his life.

Q: Describe your favorite rainy day activity.

BA: Well, I live in the high desert wherein rainy days aren’t really a thing. I mean, we have monsoon season, which means it rains from 4-4:05pm every day for a month, but that’s not the same thing.

Honestly. I live in 345 annual days of sun.

The closest we have are snowy days, because I have seen that happen 4-5 times.

During those days, Julia and I get the blankies, the dogs, Sherlock on the television, the coffee warmers and we snuggle. Also, Miss Sadie the Basset is a fireplace WHORE, so we light a fire for her. :D

Articles of Release CoverBlurb: Just released from the military, wounded warrior Eric Tremaine is trying to put his life back together like the doctors reassembled his shattered leg. He’s a man with no home, since his Louisiana family rejected him, so Eric winds up in Texas with his old Army buddy, Adam Winchester, and his lover, Sage.

When Eric decides to stop sitting on his ass feeling sorry for himself, he is introduced to trainer Troy Daniels, who lost both his legs in a teenage accident. Troy knows what it’s like to feel as if your body is your enemy. While Eric and Troy have a bumpy start, they soon find enough common ground to make a friendship, if not more. But taking it to the next level means finding out what they have to offer each other, and the world, before they can trust that the love they find together won’t cause more pain than pleasure.

BA TortugaAbout the author: Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy’s Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her basset hounds, getting tattooed, texting her sisters, and eating Mexican food. When she’s not doing that, she’s writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting and surfing porn sites in the name of research. BA’s personal saviors include her wife (still amazing to say that), Julia Talbot, her best friend, Sean Michael, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.

Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to hard-core cowboys to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which was raised in Northeast Texas, but has gone to the high desert mountains and fallen in love. With books ranging from hard-hitting GLBT romance, to fiery menages, to the most traditional of love stories, BA refuses to be pigeon-holed by anyone but the voices in her head.

WP: Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Courtney Lux, author of Small Wonders.

Hi Courtney, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

CL: Hi and thank you for having me! I am a Minnesotan-turned-New Yorker, and I am actually a part-time writer. I got my B.S. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and I’m finishing an M.S. at New York University in Communication Sciences and Disorders, so I live a bit of a double life. While working my way through graduate school, through a series of a lot of late nights and days spent in coffee shops, I wrote my first novel, Small Wonders.

WP: Tell us about your book.

CL: Small Wonders is the story of Trip Morgan, an individual who ran away to New York City from a hard home life in the south when he was only sixteen. Trip is living with an eclectic band of roommates and he makes a meager living working as a busker, and, at times, as a casual sex worker in order to keep surviving in the city. Trip entertains himself pickpocketing inconsequential items off people, but when he “accidentally” lifts a wallet off of Nate Mackey, a 26-year-old working in finance, he is struck by the uncanny resemblance of this man to a child in a photograph he found years before. Trip and Nate meet and form a sort of unconventional relationship and really work to navigate both themselves and one another. The story is a very unconventional romance in that it definitely follows Trip’s relationship with Nate, but it also has a heavy focus on Trip figuring himself out as his own person.

WP: How difficult was it to get into the main character’s head?

CL: Trip is a character that I’ve actually known and have been working with for a very long time, so getting into his head was one of the easier aspects of the novel. We’ve been together so long, that he often feels more like an exasperating friend than someone who simply exists on paper. The only hard part of him was that he doesn’t always understand himself or his reactions to things, but I still had to understand them so that could be a bit of a balancing act.

WP: Is this book a standalone or do you plan on visiting it again?

CL: Part of me feels like I could write about Trip and Nate forever and never be tired of them, but I think the book also stands alone beautifully. I’m fairly certain this is it, but never say never, right?

WP: Why did you choose to write M/M stories?

CL: It was never really a conscious decision, nor is it really the focus of what I write. Like I mentioned before, Small Wonders is very unconventional as a romance novel. Trip is a character working his way through a lot of things, including what it means to be in a relationship with someone, and the gender of that other person just happens to be the same as his own. I think one of the things that really drew me to working with Interlude Press was the shared belief that representation matters, but the focus of the books are on the stories and larger experiences of the characters, not just the fact that they identify on the LGBTQ spectrum.

WP: Where do you find your inspiration?

CL: Literally everywhere. Trip’s obsession with stealing inconsequential items came about when I found a plastic dinosaur in the bottom of my purse and couldn’t remember where it came from and then bloomed into a larger idea. Inspiration, for me, can be places, inconsequential items, somebody I see in the park, or a song. It’s always fun when a new idea strikes and flowers into a more complete story.

WP: Do you buy a book because of the cover, the blurb, or something else?

HW: With ebooks and print books, it’s pretty much the same. Cover, blurb, and read a sample.

WP: What does ‘romance’ mean to you?

HW: My significant other and I travel when we can and most of the time, we go out of the country. Neither of speaks any other language but English. So though we’re surrounded by people in beautiful, exotic (to us) places, it is just him and me, depending on each other in a way we don’t have to at home. We’re our own bubble, bobbing along and taking in the sites with only each other to turn to. It’s exciting in a romantic way, as we’re alone yet together sharing an adventure.

WP: What is the most difficult part of writing for you?

HW: It’s not finding time and energy to write anymore as much as it’s getting anything else done these days. I am always glued to the laptop or a notebook or a research book. The weeds grow, the laundry piles higher, and I have popsicles and popcorn for lunch again.

WP: Tell us something about yourself that would surprise people.

HW: You know, I’m pretty boring. Most of the time, people are surprised when I tell them I’m an author, but you’re not looking for that answer, are you? I got nothin’.

WP: What are your current projects?

HW: I am finishing the sequel to Hitting Black Ice (Loose Id). It’s called Send Lawyers, Guns, and Roses, and it’s out to betas. Another round of revisions and off it goes to my editor. Finally. There’s a Renaissance era romantic suspense that my editor asked for revisions on way back when, so that’s next. I’m working on a steampunk novella called Burning Sky and some of that WIP is on my blog.

Book Blast Review and Giveaway: Cronin’s Key III by N.R. Walker

Cronin's Key Banner

Title: Cronin’s Key III

Author: N.R. Walker

Publisher: Self-Published

Pages/Word Count: 193 Pages

At a Glance: Another gripping and wild ride for Alec, Cronin and their friends that has them hopping around the globe to once again save the world from the creatures that go bump in the night. :)

Reviewed By: Sadonna

Blurb: History isn’t always what it seems…

Twelve months after his change, Alec MacAidan is still getting used to his many vampire talents. While most vampires would give anything to have more than one supernatural power, Alec craves nothing more than peace and time alone with Cronin. But when Alec meets entities from outside this realm, he’s left powerless in their presence.

Zoan are half-lycan, half-dragon creatures that have slipped through time and reality, seemingly undetected by man and vampire. Or have they? They bear an uncanny resemblance to gargoyles, leaving Alec’s view on all things weird to get a whole lot weirder.

This new quest leads Alec, Cronin, and their band of friends to Paris, Rome, and Moscow, where they learn that gargoyles aren’t simply statues on walls. In the underground pits beneath churches all over the world, Alec discovers the Key’s true destiny. Facing the Zoan might take every talent he has. And he may need help from the dead to get them all out alive.

Dividers

Note: This is the third book in a series, and, as such, pretty much the whole book is spoilers for the previous installments. Not recommended to read these out of order.

Review: This story begins about a year after the events of Cronin’s Key II, and Alec, now the most powerful vampire ever in existence, is still trying to come to terms with all of his amazing powers that seem to manifest themselves. While cataloguing his many talents is getting pretty tedious, he understands the need to do so. He just wishes he could have some peace and quiet and more time on his own with Cronin – which he manages every once in a while. :) Everything seems to be going smoothly – until it isn’t.

In the midst of his own home, Alec is suddenly visited by 5 creatures who call themselves Zoan. But they are able to stop time, and no one besides Alec can see them because they are also frozen in time. This is very disconcerting for everyone, especially Cronin, because he perceives this as a great danger to Alec, particularly when the Zoan declare Alec to be their enemy.

Alec now has many gifts that come in handy – especially since he seems to be the only one who is able to see the Zoan when they stop time. But, by projecting what he sees to his friends, they are better able to help him formulate a plan to try to discover what and who the Zoan are, and, perhaps, how to stop them.

As usual, we have globe-hopping vampires who visit a number of historical places that may or may not have meaning and importance to the appearance of the Zoan. We hit Paris and Rome and Moscow, and my favorite place, Turkey! Turns out there are a lot of magical places on earth covered up by other things so that most of the humans are unaware of the deeper levels. And these levels seem to be portals that allow these creatures to emerge.

We also get a lot of mythology/history explained as remnants of old stories that are based in the earlier encounters with these monsters. They have wreaked havoc before and are back to somehow use Alec to claim a final victory. But our intrepid friends have a devil of a time trying to figure out how and why and where this will take place. Luckily, with his merry band of vampire friends – as well as some new friends – Alec and company race to the final confrontation with the Zoan, in a battle for control that is not to be missed.

I have to say that I for one am sad to see this series end, and I’m hoping we at least get some little visits along the way with Alec and Cronin – and their friends – because they are a great couple and I will miss them. The way the author has woven history and mythology together throughout the series, along with creating such an interesting cast of characters in these vampires (with a couple of humans thrown in), it has been really fascinating. I still think these would make great movies, with Alex O’Loughlin playing Alec. :)

Once again, well done and highly recommended for a guaranteed great time reading a fun, interesting and exciting story.

WP: Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Brad Vance, author of Werewolves of Brooklyn. Hi, Brad, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

Brad: Thanks for the opportunity!

Q: Talk to us about your characters in this book. What makes them unique?

Brad: I really set out to make my werewolves unlike any others. I’ve resisted doing “shifter” stories my whole career, even though I know they’re lucrative, because the genre felt tapped out, creatively. But my werewolves aren’t cursed, they aren’t slaves of their natures, the full moon has nothing to do with it. I researched the lives and habits of actual wolves, and based my story on that.

Q: What was one of the most surprising things you learned in getting your book from start to publish?

Brad: Darien’s journey from the time he’s first exposed to his “wolf nature” is one of burgeoning self-confidence, energy, sexuality, joy. I realized how much I’d changed myself since I started writing, especially since I went full-time. I’d gone from a passive participant in my own life to having full agency, and as I wrote Darien, I realized in a lot of ways I was writing my own story.

Q: Have you ever gone to a convention? If so, how was it? If not, do you think it’s something you’d like to do in the future?

Brad: I haven’t been. I’d like to someday, but right now I’m struggling financially, especially with the new Kindle Unlimited compensation system. My travel’s been limited to research trips and total decompression vacations!

Q: How do you like being a full-time writer?

Brad: I love it. It’s stressful, since your income can be five figures one month and barely four in another. But I’m my own boss, and I’m finally paid for my labor and not my time – nobody is making me warm a chair and punch a clock to prove how much I’m working. When my work is done, I’m done. Even on my worst days I think, what would you be doing right now if you still lived in Cubicle City? And that adjusts my attitude!

WP: Design the ultimate pizza.

Brad: I gotta say, right now I’m addicted to the Round Table garlic chicken pizza. Extra garlic, extra chicken. I’d have a hard time beating that.

Werewolves of Brooklyn CoverBlurb: Darien Mackey wasn’t looking for an adventure. For ten years, he’d been happy living in Brooklyn, working as a butcher in the same job, living in the same apartment, dating some “nothing-special” guys. Until one night his buddy Jacob talked him into taking ayahuasca, the soul-changing drug. And Darien had a vision…of a wolf, its all-too-human eyes on him, its paws on his chest, its enquiring mind in his own…

Darien Mackey is changing. He’s more confident, more assertive, hungrier, hornier. And his world is changing around him – his job, his home, his beloved Mechanic’s Library all falling victim to the predations of unscrupulous developers, bent on demolishing the old Brooklyn he loves and replacing it with a forest of condos. But he’s no longer a passive observer of his own life, and as this thing, this power, grows inside of him, he resolves to fight back, to preserve the way of life he loves.

And he’s not alone in the fight. The Lipsius Preservation Society of Brooklyn stands ready to assist in the battle, even though it seems like a bit of a joke to Darien, with its King and its Duke, Marquess, Earl and Viscount.

But there’s nothing funny about his growing attraction to Albeus Finley, King of this mysterious Court. And when slumlords and condo-mongers start to die mysterious, violent deaths at the hands of savage animals, Darien begins to realize that something is afoot in Brooklyn – something supernatural.

And it’s afoot in him, too…

WP: Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Naomi MacKenzie author of Lodestones.

Hi Naomi, thank you for agreeing to this interview. Tell us a little about yourself, your background, and your current book.

NM: Hi there! Thanks for having me.

I’m a Canadian from the east coast, currently living in the Toronto area and pining for the sea. I’ve been writing for myself since I was very young, mostly poems and short stories. I have several novels on the go at all times, but Lodestones is my first completed novel.

Q: What are your ambitions for your writing career?

A: I would love to someday write full time. It would be a dream come true to have an entire shelf of my own books.

Q: How many published books do you have? Can you tell us something about them?

A: Lodestones is my first published book. It’s a YA novel with a large cast of characters: new friends, old friends, lovers, potential lovers. I think it’s a lot of fun.

Q: Give us an insight into your main character. What does he/she do that is so special?

A: There are really two main characters in Lodestones: Robin and Charlie. They’ve been best friends since their first year of college, and now going into their final year are starting to realize, or maybe simply admit to, feelings that run deeper. Their relationship is very sweet. They’re affectionate and supportive of each other. Robin grew up in a cold family, and Charlie with just his mom, so they’ve both been a bit affection-starved their whole lives. Neither of them have had a friendship like they share with anyone else. So they’re always learning. But I think they’re better at it than either of them believe themselves to be.

Q: What are you working on at the moment? What’s it about?

A: I have a few things in progress. One is an adult novel about a young woman reconnecting with her outcast uncle after discovering that he is dying. And also a LGBT YA series with supernatural elements. Haunted hotels and all kinds of spooky fun.

Q: Do you aim for a set amount of words/pages per day?

A: I usually set a goal of a thousand words per day, but I honestly rarely follow that rule. Sometimes I can’t manage more than a few paragraphs, and other times I will finish an entire chapter or more in one sitting. My muse and my energy levels are unpredictable. I think the most important thing is to work every day, no matter how much I accomplish. It forms a sort of routine. Even if my routine isn’t exactly routine.

Hi there. Thanks so much for having me on your blog today to talk about my newest book, Sex, Love, and Videogames, the third novel in the Serpentine Series. Each book is a standalone but the series has recurring characters. Sex, Love, and Videogames is the story of Jed Carter, who we first met in Serpentine Walls, and Charlie Ambrose, a new character to the series.

The Serpentine Series is set in and around the University of Virginia. That fact is already known but what you might not know is that some of the events of Serpentine Walls came straight out of my life when I was in college, specifically Pete’s meeting with Professor R on the steps of the old amphitheatre, and the family divorce saga.

In Sex, Love, and Videogames, I made up the coffee shop, Higher Grounds, and the artist collective and C’Ville Queer Alliance. I created the kind of community groups and spaces that I would like to see. I have no idea if something like them exists in Charlottesville today, but it would be great if they did.

The Serpentine Series comes from the title of the first novel, Serpentine Walls. The University of Virginia campus was designed by Thomas Jefferson and he included these wavy brick walls called serpentine walls that enclose the formal gardens behind the stately faculty houses. I liked the allusion to those actual walls. But the title also alludes to the walls we build around our hearts and the fact that there’s no straight path to figuring ourselves out and letting love in.

Sex, Love, and Videogames was a brainstorm I had as I was trying to figure out a title for Jed and Charlie’s story. It’s loosely based on the title of a Steven Soderbergh movie, Sex, Lies, and Videotapes. I was thinking about how Jed wants something more than sex and videogames (which is what he had with Pete, the guy he’s with before Charlie). What Jed wants is love. The title popped into my head and I went with it

Q:) Your main character wants to cook something for his love interest. What does he make?

A:) I’m laughing because neither Jed nor Charlie are much of a cook. Charlie hasn’t had to be because his grandmother, Granny Myrt, is a wonderful cook. But since Jed and Charlie move in together in Richmond to attend Virginia Commonwealth University at the end of the story, they now have to fend for themselves. I can see a cute scene in which Jed asks Granny Myrt for her macaroni and cheese recipe so he can surprise Charlie with it

Q.) What do you think makes a good story?

A.) In romance, one in which the characters are believable, which includes their internal struggles and motivations. An interesting plot is great but I don’t need a lot of plot, as long as the characters are taking an emotional journey that feels true and the resolution is satisfying. That usually means they have learned something or overcome something in order to get to the happy ending.

Q.) What does your family think of your writing?

A.) It took me a long while to “come out” to my family about my writing. I told my husband first and he was fine about it. One of my older sisters was next. I remember going on a long car ride with her and telling her the plot of my first novella – like almost acting out the scenes – and her being enthralled. My younger sister belongs to a “born again” Christian church so it took me longer to tell her, but she didn’t bat an eyelash, nor did my mother. The major hurdle for me was my father. I had no intentions of sharing my writing with him. But Dad insisted and persisted until I finally sent him a story. Thus began the oddest and most wonderful email exchange in which my 85-year old father would ask me questions like “What is a twink?” When my first novel was published, I sent him a paperback copy with no qualms. He passed away about a year ago and I’m so glad I was able to share my writing with him while he was alive.

Sex, Love, and Video GamesBlurb: Shy guy Jed Carter has always felt invisible next to his charismatic older brother, Kent. Kent’s master plan for Jed is simple: University of Virginia, business, sports, and ladies’ man. None of it is Jed, except for playing on the rugby team, which he joins in defiance of soccer-loving Kent. Jed comes out in his sophomore year and starts seeing Pete, an attractive junior, who uses him for sex and videogames. Jed wants more—in life and in love—and starts making his own plans. First on the list: getting to know Charlie, the handsome guy working at the local videogame arcade.

Charlie Ambrose has always felt like an oddball, and not just for his tendency to stutter. Being gay sets him apart from his African-American community, and as a “townie,” he doesn’t fit in with the college crowd. Charlie’s inspiration is his cousin, Morocco, who’s transgender and doesn’t give a fig about fitting in. Art is Charlie’s passion, and when a local videogame designer discovers him, Charlie’s living a dream. The only thing he’s missing is love. But the last person Charlie expects to find it with is a cute, white U.Va. rugby player named Jed.

WP: Today I’m very lucky to be interviewing Chris McHart, author of Alex’s Surprise and Saving Alex.

Hi Chris, thank you for agreeing to this interview.

WP: When did you write your first story/book? How old were you?

CM: Twenty-six, my daughter was just born and I had some time at my hands (she slept a lot)

WP: Are you a plotter or pantser?

CM: Plotter. Totally. The stories never take the way I plotted it out, but I need a plan, otherwise I get writer’s block.

WP: What do you think makes your book stand out from the crowd?

CM: I tackled a book about m-preg with some paranormal elements. I’ve been told the book has enough paranormal elements so it’s believable, but even non-paranormal readers enjoyed it, since the focus is not on the paranormal aspect.

WP: How do you find or make time to write?

CM: Fight for it. Two hours every day, most days more. I get up early, get to bed late. Write in my lunch break and whenever I can.

WP: What do you like to read in your free time?

CM: MM Romance, of course. And I recently bought my first lesbian novel. :)

Saving AlexSaving Alex: Not only is Alex pregnant, something punishable by jail time, but Gerome, the father of the baby, is a vampire prince. When strangers invade Alex’s home and kidnap him, he doesn’t know who is responsible, if he’ll ever see the man he loves again, or even get to see the child growing inside him.

Considering himself the father of his lover’s child, Sam has a hard time standing around and letting others plan Alex’s rescue. But when the Prince and his trackers find an important clue, the race to save his beloved is on. Now all he can do is cross his fingers that the scheme they’ve devised will work.

When Prince Gerome receives ransom demands, the instructions are clear: mate a complete stranger or he’ll never see Alex or the child he carries again. Will he be able to convince his newly intended to help, or will those seeking to dethrone his family win this evil game of blackmail?

Caution: Contains a kidnapping, unwanted matings, a scheming king, way too many people that follow their own plans and a highly pregnant Alex.

TNA: We’re so pleased to have S.A. McAuley and SJD Peterson with us today to chat about their new collaboration Ruin Porn.

Thanks so much for dropping by to hang with us! Let’s just dig right into things, ‘kay? Who came up with the idea for the book, and what exactly inspired it?

Jo: That’s an easy one! We both came up with it at the exact same moment! We were watching one of our favorite bands, Bastille, and one of the members did something as innocent as move to stand near another one at the keyboard, and BAM! Sam and I looked at each other and just knew….

Sam: It’s dangerous anytime the two of us are together, and that moment was sheer magic. We had a 12+ hour car trip back to Michigan to plot out Ruin Porn. That was almost two years ago, and everyone gets to meet the boys of Resonator this Friday! We’re excited.

TNA: Had you been intending to write together for a while, or was this project more a sudden burst of inspiration? Was there liquor involved? ;-)

Sam: We’d talked about writing together but neither of our schedules worked out at the time we got the idea. But when we finally did start writing we figured out really quick that our styles matched well.

Jo: There is always liquor involved ;)

TNA: Why music, musicians, rock stars? What do you find exceedingly sexy about a guy who knows how to handle his instrument?

Sam: OH! HANDS! I’ve got this thing for strong, expressive hands and wrists and forearms (and watches, not coincidentally).

Jo: It’s the whole package–tats, confidence, and talent!

TNA: If you had the chance to be a groupie for any band, past or present, and follow them on tour, who would you choose, and why?

Sam: I would’ve loved to travel with Led Zeppelin when they were creating music. They were my first musical idols. As for current bands, that would be Bastille. They seem to genuinely love what they do and appreciate how the fans have helped them get where they are.

Jo: Pearl Jam or Thirty Seconds to Mars. Love my sexy, bad boy rockers!

TNA: Do you think we could bring the guys from Resonator into the conversation now?

Sam: *cackles* Good luck!

**Miah, Ritchie, Finn and Ev enter and take a seat on TNA’s big comfy couch**

TNA: Hey, guys, why don’t we have you go round and introduce yourselves to your audience?

Miah: *leans down to kiss Lisa’s cheek* Hey, babe. Thanks for having us.

Finn: Give the woman some space, man. Hey, I’m Finn, Rez’s guitarist. And the handsy dude is Miah, our sexed up leader.

Evin: I’m Ev. I play bass. *Ritchie drops onto his lap and sprawls his legs across the other guys* and this is Ritchie. He bangs sticks on stuff.

Ritchie: Anyone bring beer?

TNA: **hands Ritchie a beer from the mini-bar** Here you go, Ritchie. Now, what do you all love and hate most about being in a band?

Ritchie: There are no home cooked meals while on the road.

Finn: That’s the worst part by far.

Evin: Best part is being paid to do what I love and do it with the people I love the most in this world.

Finn: Are you blushing, Ev? That’s adorable.

Miah: The best part is that we helped you escape from that dreadful band Sock in the Sun, Ev.

Evin: True.

TNA: What are some of your favorite, shall we say…fringe benefits of being famous?

Miah: Are you talking about sex? If so, that’s my answer.

Ritchie: Sex is not always a benefit.

Finn: Cheese fries are! I get a free basket of cheese fries at my favorite coney place now. That is a serious fringe benefit.

Ritchie: What about you, Ev?

Evin: Those tiny bottles of condiments in hotels. I fucking love those.

TNA: Confession time – what’s the one thing you’ve done, something none of the other guys know about, that would blow their minds if you were to tell us about it right now?

Evin: These guys know everything about me.

Finn: I think the more interesting question is what do we know about each other that no one else in the world knows.

Miah: *narrows his eyes* You wouldn’t.

Ritchie: You know he won’t. We’ve got each other first. Always.

TNA: Aw, having read the book, I’d say that’s pretty damn cool. Do you all believe in fate, destiny, whatever name we assign those random events in our lives that lead us down various paths, or do you feel like you’ve been in control of all the good and bad and ugly that’s happened to you?

Miah: The life force of the universe is strong. Everything is connected.

Finn: For fuck’s sake, Miah. Can we have one interview where you don’t go all metaphysical on us?

Ritchie: I don’t know, man. I think Miah’s right.

Evin: *pats Ritchie’s head* Of course you do.

TNA: Do you believe everything that’s happened, all of it, has happened for a reason? Do you think you’d be where you are today if things had gone differently?

Evin: *squirms in a his seat a bit* I don’t know that we’re ready to give a real insider look at what’s happened with Rez in the last year.

*the other three shake their heads*

TNA: Okay, guys, parting words. Where do you go from here?

Miah: *looks at the other guys and grins* Up.

TNA: And I wouldn’t have expected you to say anything else. :D Thanks for taking the time to hang with us today, gang, it’s been a pleasure!

RuinPornBlurb: There is underlying beauty in destruction….

Miah Thade, Finn Reese, and Ritchie Meyer are Resonator, an indie rock band with an edge—best friends turned rock stars, known as the Detroit 3. When Evin Rene appears in their life, none of them can deny he belongs with Rez.

They may have named their first album Ruin Porn because people get off on seeing how Detroit went from deeply loved to thoroughly forsaken, but they’re determined to prove that blight isn’t the entire story and blight isn’t always ugly.

Ritchie, Miah, Finn, and Evin take Resonator to a level no one anticipates. But no prosperity comes without sacrifice, and no secret stays hidden without a trail of lies. As Rez’s fame grows, so does the intensity between two of its members… as well as their potential for destruction.

Evin and Finn are about to discover the underlying beauty in their ruin porn.

WP: Kim, do you have pictures that you use for your characters? Can you share them with us?

KF: I don’t exactly have pictures for the characters in this book. Catherine Dair is making me some amazing drawings of Jimmy and Shane, though. I’ll share them when they’re ready—and I’ll have the drawings made into trading cards.

Today, however, I can share a picture of Shane’s shirt! It’s a blue plaid Pendleton like this one: Sir Pendleton Wool Shirt. He wears it all the time. In fact, this shirt inspired his character. I saw the shirt in a Western-wear shop and almost immediately got a mental image of a man wearing it. He was tall and thin, with a cowboy’s drawl. But he moved with a careful limp as he crossed the worn wooden floor of an old building. I knew he worked there. And that was Shane.

WP: What kind of book would you like to write that people would see as a huge departure for you?

KF: I write in a lot of genres. And sometimes I do light and fluffy, and sometimes angsty. So I think it might be hard for me to surprise readers. But… I’ve had a plot bunny for a while now: a historical novel about a man shanghaied from San Francisco in the late nineteenth century who ends up finding gold in the Klondike. It’s not m/m romance, but will require lots of juicy research. I love research.

WP: Have you ever killed a character? Was it traumatic for you? If you haven’t killed one, would you ever consider it?

KF: I’ve killed a couple of them, and it was really traumatic. I dreaded writing those scenes. In one case, the death happens off page, but it was no less painful for me. And in the other case, I actually killed the poor guy twice in one book! It doesn’t help when I know that the story will have a happy ending; hurting my beloved guys hurts me.

I have to say, though, that other plot events can be even more excruciating to write. Back in my fanfic days, I wrote a long story in which one character ends up betraying the other in a terrible way. He has to do it, and he felt as awful about it as I did, but I hated writing that scene anyway. (And for those who are wondering, my fandom was the Buffyverse, and it was Xander who did something really devastating to Spike’s progenitor, William Pratt).

WP: Favorite location you’ve ever written about?

KF: To be totally honest, it’s the fictional town of Rattlesnake, California. It’s no accident that the book is named for the town. I’d even go so far as to say that the town itself is a major character in the story. It’s based loosely on a real place, Angels Camp, which is in the Sierra foothills. But even though I’ve spent a fair bit of time in Angels Camp, Rattlesnake is actually a lot more real—in my head, anyway. I can picture the terrain, the shops and houses, the local residents. I know exactly what the best dishes are at Mae’s Café and how the air smells on an autumn evening. I love it so much that I hope to write another story set in Rattlesnake—only this one will take place in the town’s infancy during the gold rush era.

WP: What’s your favorite season and favorite activity for that season?

KF: Fall. Maybe because I’ve always been either a student or a professor, but fall feels like new beginnings. Also, during the summer, the place where I live feels a lot like a convection oven. I’m relieved for cooler weather at last. I do a lot of travel in the fall. This year I’m in Europe in early September, then off to Gay Romance Northwest in Seattle, then to GayRomLit in San Diego. And I love Halloween too! We always decorate the house, and we get so many trick-or-treaters that we have to buy multiple Costco-sized bags of candy. Sometimes I dress up, but even when I don’t, I enjoy helping my kids plan their costumes.

TNA: Thanks so much for being here with us today, Kim. It’s always a pleasure.

RattlesnakeBlurb: A drifter since his teens, Jimmy Dorsett has no home and no hope. What he does have is a duffel bag, a lot of stories, and a junker car. Then one cold desert night he picks up a hitchhiker and ends up with something more: a letter from a dying man to the son he hasn’t seen in years.

On a quest to deliver the letter, Jimmy travels to Rattlesnake, a small town nestled in the foothills of the California Sierras. The centerpiece of the town is the Rattlesnake Inn, where the bartender is handsome former cowboy Shane Little. Sparks fly, and when Jimmy’s car gives up the ghost, Shane gets him a job as handyman at the inn.

Both within the community of Rattlesnake and in Shane’s arms, Jimmy finds an unaccustomed peace. But it can’t be a lasting thing. The open road continues to call, and surely Shane—a strong, proud man with a painful past and a difficult present—deserves better than a lying vagabond who can’t stay put for long.

Kim FieldingAbout the Author: Kim Fielding is the bestselling author of numerous m/m romance novels, novellas, and short stories. Like Kim herself, her work is eclectic, spanning genres such as contemporary, fantasy, paranormal, and historical. Her stories are set in alternate worlds, in 15th century Bosnia, in modern-day Oregon. Her heroes are hipster architect werewolves, housekeepers, maimed giants, and conflicted graduate students. They’re usually flawed, they often encounter terrible obstacles, but they always find love.

After having migrated back and forth across the western two-thirds of the United States, Kim calls the boring part of California home. She lives there with her husband, her two daughters, and her day job as a university professor, but escapes as often as possible via car, train, plane, or boat. This may explain why her characters often seem to be in transit as well. She dreams of traveling and writing full-time.
