Music and Writing

Since Running With Scissors is about musicians, I figured this would be a good opportunity to talk about what music I listen to while writing. Because there is always music playing while I write. I need my tunes, yo!

The band in the book is a hard rock band, so you would think that’s what I listened to while writing it, but it was quite the opposite. I go through phases with music, and my tastes during Running With Scissors were, shall we say, varied.

Here are ten songs that came up frequently while I wrote this book:

  1. Father by Tooji
  2. Skulls by Bastille
  3. Northern Lights by 30 Seconds to Mars
  4. Somewhere With You by Kenny Chesney
  5. Rebels by Tooji
  6. Burnin’ it Down by Jason Aldean
  7. Do or Die by 30 Seconds to Mars
  8. Red by Awake! Awake!
  9. Goodnight Goodbye by John Newman
  10. Warrior by Ke$ha

Which kind of gives you an idea of what I listen to as a general rule. As always, a ton of 30 Seconds to Mars, which will surprise precisely no one. I listen to a ton of Bastille, am hooked on Tooji, and am impatiently waiting for more music by John Newman, Ke$ha (yes, I love her – don’t judge me), Adam Lambert, and Luke Bryan.

Next week, it’ll probably be God Module and KMFDM. Then I’ll go back on a country kick. A week later, it’ll be pop drivel as far as the eye can see—I am completely unashamed of loving Britney Spears and Miley Cyrus. And toward the end of September, it’ll be 30 Seconds to Mars on full volume because I’m going to see them in concert again and OMG CANNOT WAIT.

So there you have it—my appalling taste in background music while writing books about musicians. :D

L.A. WittAbout the Author: L.A. Witt is an abnormal M/M romance writer who has finally been released from the purgatorial corn maze of Omaha, Nebraska, and now spends her time on the southwestern coast of Spain. In between wondering how she didn’t lose her mind in Omaha, she explores the country with her husband, several clairvoyant hamsters, and an ever-growing herd of rabid plot bunnies. She also has substantially more time on her hands these days, as she has recruited a small army of mercenaries to search South America for her nemesis, romance author Lauren Gallagher, but don’t tell Lauren. And definitely don’t tell Lori A. Witt or Ann Gallagher. Neither of those twits can keep their mouths shut…

L.A.’s backlist is available on her website, and updates (as well as random thoughts and the odd snarky comment) can be found on her blog or on Twitter (@GallagherWitt).

RunningWithScissors_600x900Blurb: Eighteen months ago, drummer Jude Colburn made the biggest mistake of his life when he walked away from his band just as they were on the brink of success. Now, he’s got a second chance. The band’s bassist just quit, and Jude plays bass almost as well as he plays drums. The other band members aren’t thrilled, but they are desperate.

Running with Scissors needs him, but there’s one condition: no hooking up with bandmates. That’s what ruined things eighteen months ago, after all. Jude’s on board, but no one warned him about the drummer who replaced him. A.J. Palmer is shy and unassuming . . . until he hits the stage. He gets Jude’s attention from the first beat, and suddenly that “no hookups” rule isn’t so easy to follow.

Keeping secrets on a tour bus isn’t easy either, and it’s only a matter of time before the band catches on. When everything hits the fan, Jude has to choose: a second chance at the career he’s always regretted leaving, or a shot at the man of his dreams?

Running With Scissors is available from Riptide Publishing.

Release Day Review: Fighting His Fire by Ann Lister

Title:  Fighting His Fire (The Rock Gods: Book 6

At a Glance:  I was so happy to finally get Dante and Ashton’s story…and it was absolutely worth the wait!

Reviewed By:  Karen

Blurb:  Locked-down at a Los Angeles intervention facility, everyone around Dante Dupont and his Black Ice band mate, Ashton Lane, thought this would fix the issues between them. Dante and Ashton knew differently. What made this a hundred times worse was the fact they were stuck in this room together. They hadn’t shared space like this since the one afternoon they both wanted to forget. And, revisiting that nightmare was not an option . . . with or without the help of a therapist.

Two musicians. Same band. Afraid to admit their true feelings, being in close quarters again has them both at their breaking point. They say if you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen, but neither of them can find a reason to leave, and fighting the fire is becoming more and more difficult to do.

Dante’s baggage isn’t pretty and his scars run deep, but Ashton might be the one to finally see beyond his past and help him find a way out from the smoke screen he’s spent his life hiding behind. In order to get there, though, they’ll both have to walk through the flames.

Review:  I was so happy to finally get Dante and Ashton’s story…and it was absolutely worth the wait!

I love this series more and more as each new book is released. I was a little concerned at the beginning, I had a hard time getting into it at first, but I’m pretty sure that had more to do with my mood than the story. For a story to break through that, and not only grab my attention but hold it, to the point I was staying up way past when I should have to get through just one more chapter (Okay, so it was around 3 am when I finally put it down, and it was only because I finished it), is a great read.

There are many emotions and issues swirling around these two, so you just have to sit back and wait for the tension to release. My first thought was that Dante and Ashton definitely took it to an extreme; they reminded me of little kids who pick on each other and fight with the kid they have a crush on, push them down on the playground and pull their pigtails.  But, once they got over that initial hurdle—although there were more to follow—they were seriously hot together and sweet, but really hot (kind of an inferno…Dante’s Inferno). :)

With the slump I have been in lately, I am thinking it may be time to do a reread of the entire Rock Gods series, and I couldn’t love this new addition more than I do. It is probably too soon to start asking when we will get Lincoln’s story, but I am a little impatient and can’t wait for more of this series!

Excerpt: Ashton shook off Dante’s hold on his arm and inched closer. “Why are you doing this? Are you deliberately trying to bait me into fighting with you? Or do you want me to leave? Because, I gotta say, I’m real close to punching you in the face right now and walking the fuck out of here.”

“Why would you do that?” Dante argued. “I seriously thought you might be interested in the brunette!”

Ashton blew out a breath and ran a hand through his tangled hair. As hard as he tried to calm himself, it didn’t work. He shook his head, then met Dante’s piercing blue eyes head on. “The only brunette I’m interested in has a dick – not a pussy. Got it?” And, with that declaration, Ashton stalked off in the direction of the bar. He ordered another beer and a shot of Jack Daniels. He’d already done the shot when Dante slid in beside him at the bar. Ashton noticed the fire in Dante’s eyes right away. It was never difficult to detect when Dante had a storm brewing inside of him. The question was always whether the fire was due to anger or passion and right now Ashton really didn’t know which he’d be fighting. What he wasn’t prepared for was hearing the smooth texture of Dante’s voice when he finally spoke.

“Do you want to get out of here, Ashes?”

I thought you’d never fucking ask. Ashton kept that comment to himself and simply turned away from the bar and Dante’s expressive eyes and walked toward the elevator. He didn’t much care if Dante was following or not, because with or without him, Ashton was leaving.

Blurb: There is underlying beauty in destruction….

Miah Thade, Finn Reese, and Ritchie Meyer are Resonator, an indie rock band with an edge—best friends turned rock stars, known as the Detroit 3. When Evin Rene appears in their life, none of them can deny he belongs with Rez.

They may have named their first album Ruin Porn because people get off on seeing how Detroit went from deeply loved to thoroughly forsaken, but they’re determined to prove that blight isn’t the entire story and blight isn’t always ugly.

Ritchie, Miah, Finn, and Evin take Resonator to a level no one anticipates. But no prosperity comes without sacrifice, and no secret stays hidden without a trail of lies. As Rez’s fame grows, so does the intensity between two of its members… as well as their potential for destruction.

Evin and Finn are about to discover the underlying beauty in their ruin porn.

Review: So, when I’m offered a book written by S.A. McAuley or SJD Peterson, what are some of the first things that come to mind? First of all, I know there’s probably going to be some angst involved (there is). I know there’s probably going to be at least one character I want to sucker-punch just once (there is). I know I’m not going to get a standard-template romance (this isn’t). I know there’s going to be some pretty amazing emotional and sexual chemistry (there is). And, finally, I know that by the end I’ll be completely invested in the couple’s happy beginning (I am).

Now, you throw these two authors together, and what do you have? A match made in Ruin Porn, and I’m already salivating to get my paws on the next book because that character I want to sucker-punch? Seriously, if this book was angsty… Gird your reading loins, people.

I’d never heard the term ruin porn before, though I now know how apropos it is not only to this book but to all the angst-laden books we love to devour. Ruin porn is about getting off on the decay and destruction of something that was once beautiful. Welcome to the Ruin Porn Club, kiddies, because that’s exactly what these two authors initiate us into as we’re hazed by the growing lust and love between Finn and Evin. And then we get to watch as it all comes to ruin because of lies and fear and homophobia, and the all too intrusive camera-in-a-fish-bowl lives their fame became. And, I reveled in every single word of it. I’m not sure what the repair that begins after the devastation is called, though. Maybe that’s just what we romantics call hope. Finn and Ev give us hope that love will be enough to rebuild on.

The Detroit 3—Miah, Ritchie, and Finn—get a plus one when guitarist Kevin Rene accepts the invite to join Resonator as their bass player, becomes Evin, and spends the next year on a meteoric rise to stardom, while also sneaking in intimate moments with Ritchie and Finn. Let me first say I adore Ritchie—truly, madly, deeply, irrevocably—and while I know threesomes aren’t everyone’s cuppa, there was never a single moment where I felt that the time he spent with Finn and Ev was an intrusion on something deeper growing between the two men. In fact, I’d go so far as to say Ritchie made Finn and Ev possible because he was like the rudder that kept their ship on course. Or he tried to, at least, before the shitstorm hit.

I loved Evin and his quiet strength (and the one line he uttered near the end of the book that made me gasp at its naked and painful truth), loved Finn and the snark and barriers that crumbled when he simply looked at Ev, and I even looo…okay, I didn’t love Miah—not by a long shot. He’s a complete git ::sorrynotsorry:: who’s driven by his ambition, but by the end of this story I understood him a bit better. And a little understanding can go a long way toward seeing beneath the veneer and vanity, and I maybe felt a mild twinge of guilt for wanting to punch him.

No I didn’t.

Ruin Porn is a novel that complicates the already complicated business of falling in love by taking what should be private public, and made me appreciate my mundane nobody existence. It’s super sexy, made me more than a little heart-sore, and kept me glued to my Kindle from beginning to end. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this one the next time you’re in the mood for a beautiful disaster you can see coming a mile away, and have no intention of avoiding until you see it through to its finish.

Good luck!

TNA: We’re so pleased to have S.A. McAuley and SJD Peterson with us today to chat about their new collaboration Ruin Porn.

Thanks so much for dropping by to hang with us! Let’s just dig right into things, ‘kay? Who came up with the idea for the book, and what exactly inspired it?

Jo: That’s an easy one! We both came up with it at the exact same moment! We were watching one of our favorite bands, Bastille, and one of the members did something as innocent as move to stand near another one at the keyboard, and BAM! Sam and I looked at each other and just knew….

Sam: It’s dangerous anytime the two of us are together, and that moment was sheer magic. We had a 12+ hour car trip back to Michigan to plot out Ruin Porn. That was almost two years ago, and everyone gets to meet the boys of Resonator this Friday! We’re excited.

TNA: Had you been intending to write together for a while, or was this project more a sudden burst of inspiration? Was there liquor involved? ;-)

Sam: We’d talked about writing together but neither of our schedules worked out at the time we got the idea. But when we finally did start writing we figured out really quick that our styles matched well.

Jo: There is always liquor involved ;)

TNA: Why music, musicians, rock stars? What do you find exceedingly sexy about a guy who knows how to handle his instrument?

Sam: OH! HANDS! I’ve got this thing for strong, expressive hands and wrists and forearms (and watches, not coincidentally).

Jo: It’s the whole package–tats, confidence, and talent!

TNA: If you had the chance to be a groupie for any band, past or present, and follow them on tour, who would you choose, and why?

Sam: I would’ve loved to travel with Led Zeppelin when they were creating music. They were my first musical idols. As for current bands, that would be Bastille. They seem to genuinely love what they do and appreciate how the fans have helped them get where they are.

Jo: Pearl Jam or Thirty Seconds to Mars. Love my sexy, bad boy rockers!

TNA: Do you think we could bring the guys from Resonator into the conversation now?

Sam: *cackles* Good luck!

**Miah, Ritchie, Finn and Ev enter and take a seat on TNA’s big comfy couch**

TNA: Hey, guys, why don’t we have you go round and introduce yourselves to your audience?

Miah: *leans down to kiss Lisa’s cheek* Hey, babe. Thanks for having us.

Finn: Give the woman some space, man. Hey, I’m Finn, Rez’s guitarist. And the handsy dude is Miah, our sexed up leader.

Evin: I’m Ev. I play bass. *Ritchie drops onto his lap and sprawls his legs across the other guys* and this is Ritchie. He bangs sticks on stuff.

Ritchie: Anyone bring beer?

TNA: **hands Ritchie a beer from the mini-bar** Here you go, Ritchie. Now, what do you all love and hate most about being in a band?

Ritchie: There are no home cooked meals while on the road.

Finn: That’s the worst part by far.

Evin: Best part is being paid to do what I love and do it with the people I love the most in this world.

Finn: Are you blushing, Ev? That’s adorable.

Miah: The best part is that we helped you escape from that dreadful band Sock in the Sun, Ev.

Evin: True.

TNA: What are some of your favorite, shall we say…fringe benefits of being famous?

Miah: Are you talking about sex? If so, that’s my answer.

Ritchie: Sex is not always a benefit.

Finn: Cheese fries are! I get a free basket of cheese fries at my favorite coney place now. That is a serious fringe benefit.

Ritchie: What about you, Ev?

Evin: Those tiny bottles of condiments in hotels. I fucking love those.

TNA: Confession time – what’s the one thing you’ve done, something none of the other guys know about, that would blow their minds if you were to tell us about it right now?

Evin: These guys know everything about me.

Finn: I think the more interesting question is what do we know about each other that no one else in the world knows.

Miah: *narrows his eyes* You wouldn’t.

Ritchie: You know he won’t. We’ve got each other first. Always.

TNA: Aw, having read the book, I’d say that’s pretty damn cool. Do you all believe in fate, destiny, whatever name we assign those random events in our lives that lead us down various paths, or do you feel like you’ve been in control of all the good and bad and ugly that’s happened to you?

Miah: The life force of the universe is strong. Everything is connected.

Finn: For fuck’s sake, Miah. Can we have one interview where you don’t go all metaphysical on us?

Ritchie: I don’t know, man. I think Miah’s right.

Evin: *pats Ritchie’s head* Of course you do.

TNA: Do you believe everything that’s happened, all of it, has happened for a reason? Do you think you’d be where you are today if things had gone differently?

Evin: *squirms in a his seat a bit* I don’t know that we’re ready to give a real insider look at what’s happened with Rez in the last year.

*the other three shake their heads*

TNA: Okay, guys, parting words. Where do you go from here?

Miah: *looks at the other guys and grins* Up.

TNA: And I wouldn’t have expected you to say anything else. :D Thanks for taking the time to hang with us today, gang, it’s been a pleasure!

Good luck!

Interestingly enough, I was first introduced to the M/M genre about a year ago. Already writing contemporary romance, I couldn’t help but notice that all of my favorite bloggers were raving about the same book. At first, I didn’t pay much attention, as I had no experience with M/M romance. When the 5 star reviews kept coming in, I finally decided I had to see what all of the excitement was about and purchased it.

That book was Nyrae Dawn’s Rush, and it opened me up to a genre I instantly fell in love with.

I was in the middle of writing my first series, the Famous series, but knew I wanted to attempt a M/M romance of my own at some point. When I created a spin-off series about a very successful rock band, I decided that I would dip my toes in the water by making one of my rock stars gay. I’ve been planning this book since about August of 2014, so finally having it done and ready for readers is mind blowing and humbling.

In the time between August and now, I’ve immersed myself in the M/M genre, to learn every important facet of a committed gay male relationship. From terminology, to getting into a man’s mindset, all of it is different than when writing a heterosexual romance. What isn’t different is that men are emotional beings, just like women. I think that surprises some people, and personally, is one of the things I love about M/M. Men are deeper than just sex, they fall in love, get hurt, lash out, and do all of things that would typically be assigned to a female in a romance novel. Of course, some stereotypes prevail. Men, in general, aren’t very good at communicating their feelings. You do have to take that into account when writing a romance that only features men.

My favorite authors in the genre are way too many to list. I’d include Nyrae Dawn, Kindle Alexander, Felice Stevens, Jay Northcote, and so many more. I pretty much read any M/M romance that comes up on my Kindle. I’m easy like that.

Thanks for your time and I hope you enjoy Gavin and Mitch’s story! Pouty rock star meets grumpy ex-FBI agent? What could go wrong?

ResistBlurb: All Gavin Walker, bass player for the multi-platinum selling band, Sphere of Irony, wants to do is surf, play music, and occasionally get laid. The problem is that Gavin has a stalker. A potentially deadly one. The threats he receives always mention something about Gavin being gay, which isn’t public knowledge since the record label wants to keep it quiet.

Mitch Hale used to track serial killers for the FBI. A live-changing incident led him to quit the bureau and start his own company providing computerized security for Los Angeles’ wealthiest people. Mitch doesn’t know anyone when he moves across the country from D.C. to California, and all he has for companionship is a pathetic string of failed relationships with women.

When Gavin’s manager hires Mitch to find the stalker, the men instantly hate each other. Despite the constant fighting, attraction between the two blazes hot, confusing the former FBI agent. Spending time with Gavin forces Mitch reflect on what he’s denied about himself for the last ten years. Listening to Mitch’s plan to catch a madman thrusts Gavin’s personal life out in the open for the entire world to see.

Can Gavin and Mitch stop fighting long enough to stop a stalker before someone gets hurt? Or will they stubbornly resist the feelings that develop when they’re forced to work together?

This is book 3 in a 4 part series. It is a spin-off of the Famous Series. These can be read as standalones.

Author BioAbout the Author: I am a reader first and foremost, that’s what led me to begin writing down all of the stories crammed into my head.

I’ve always wondered about fame and fortune, and whether or not it’s worth it to give up most of your private life and time to be in the public eye. The more I thought about it, the more stories built up inside me. Eventually, they had to come out. That’s what began the Famous Series.

I like to write about the dark side of fame and how it truly affects those living in the fishbowl of today’s celebrity-obsessed culture.

After growing up in New England, I currently live outside of Atlanta, GA with my husband and two children.

When I’m not spinning tales of the rich and famous, I’m a full time procrastinator. I love chocolate, dogs with squished in faces, and the Boston Red Sox.
