Blurb: When your past closes in, running isn’t always an option…

The jobs Marcus Lowry works for at Phoenix, Inc. Investigations are quick and easy, and they don’t give him the nightmares his days as a CIA operative did. That is, until he gets involved in a case that grabs him by the throat and won’t let go.

Cole Jacobs left behind his old life as a rent boy to make a name for himself rebuilding high-end and vintage cars and bikes. But when a stalker threatens to kill him—and to hurt anyone who stands in his way—his past closes in on him, and he’s not sure where to turn.

The last thing Marcus wants to do is take on a charity case, and to say that he and Cole don’t see eye to eye at first is putting things mildly. But when the first attempt on Cole’s life nearly kills them both, Marcus realizes that Cole is in real danger, and Cole is forced to reveal everything. Almost everything. Because Cole’s deepest secrets could destroy them both.

Review: No Boundaries is the first book I’ve read by SE Jakes. All I can say is, what the hell is wrong with me that it took me this long? In this story, we meet Marcus and Cole. Both men have spotty pasts which haunt them, which makes them hesitant to accept what the other has to offer…namely, happiness and acceptance.

The action in this story is crafted beautifully, interwoven seamlessly with the emotional struggle of each character. The cast of secondary characters are well-developed, although they don’t deter from the main protagonists and their journey.

As I read the story, I found myself bounding toward the next chapter, eager to find out how this mystery would unfold. The sex was well crafted, bringing the reader along with the physical and emotional experiences of the characters.

It isn’t often that I come across a book that satisfies both my love of a good action packed plot line AND the beauty of two people finding love (along with all the emotional baggage that comes with it).

Highly satisfying and definitely not the last book I’ll read by this talented author.

Blurb: Cupid is visiting Bluewater Bay, and he’s leaving chaos in his wake.

Nothing’s been the same in this sleepy little logging town since Hollywood came to shoot the hit TV show Wolf’s Landing—especially Valentine’s Day.

In L.A. Witt’s Just Another Day, beloved actors Levi Pritchard and Carter Samuels have an announcement for their fans, while in Z.A. Maxfield’s I’ll Be There, actor Spencer Kepler and his boyfriend Nash Holly brave a blizzard and a fan convention to spend their first February the 14th together.

Of course, it’s not just TV stars celebrating the day. In Anne Tenino’s Helping Hand, an aspiring artist eager to escape Bluewater Bay decides he just might have a reason to stay: lust-inspiring logger Gabriel Savage. In S.E. Jakes’s No Easy Way, a local teacher reconnects with an old lover working security on the film set. And in Amy Lane’s Nascha, a Bluewater Bay elder recalls how his own unconventional family used to celebrate the holiday.

Real life may be nothing like TV, but when Cupid comes to town, there’s plenty of romance and drama to go around.

Review: If you’re like me, going into an anthology with the anticipation that there’s going to be one “weak link” story which then makes for an imperfect reading experience, I think I can safely say you can put that expectation away for Lights, Camera, Cupid!, a collection of stories set in the Bluewater Bay-verse and centered around Valentine’s Day.

Whether or not you’ve read every book in this series, or just a select few, it shouldn’t affect at all the ability to enjoy this collection for what it is: a glimpse into the lives and loves of its characters on the one day of the year dedicated to romance. In fact, at publication time, only L.A. Witt’s and Z.A. Maxfield’s characters have been introduced in Baywater, Washington, home to the popular TV series Wolf’s Landing, so enjoying the remaining three stories in the anthology is based solely on the talent of the authors and the strength of their writing.

Fittingly, L.A. Witt’s Just Another Day kicks off the collection with Levi Pritchard and Carter Samuels, as they were the first men to be introduced in the Bluewater Bay series, in Starstruck.

Levi feels a lot like I, and many others do, about Valentine’s Day and the poor excuse it makes for picking a man’s pocket every 14th of February. Being in a relationship, however, means thinking not about himself but about the man he loves. Carter doesn’t want grand and ostentatious shows of commercialism. He just wants his and Levi’s first Valentine’s Day to be special.

And wow… does Levi deliver.

There’s a bit of conflict thrown into this day founded on the idea of romance, but it’s that conflict’s sweet and satisfying resolution that is the true definition of the word romantic.

Nascha, Amy Lane’s contribution to the anthology introduces characters who have yet to be discovered in Bluewater Bay, and won’t be until The Deep of the Sound is released in June 2015. Cal McCorkle’s introduction, that novel’s MC, is peripheral to the story told in Nascha, that of Cal’s aging granduncle and how Cal and his brother Keir came to live with Nascha.

This story is told in the present and through flashbacks, plucked from the mind of a man whose lucidity ebbs and flows. For this brief moment, Nascha relives his past and recalls the love he shared with a man and woman with whom he’d intended to spend the rest of his life, but for the fact that fate and circumstance intervened, then the system declared his relationship an unfit environment in which to raise a child—his niece Beth.

There is a strong sense of longing woven throughout this unexpected tale, threaded with the sharp sting of regret and the pain of lost years, and, without giving any more of this story away, it ends with an unapologetic tug at the heartstrings, which is probably not altogether unexpected from an Amy Lane story, is it?

SE Jakes’ addition to the collection, No Easy Way, is, I must say, my favorite novella in Lights, Camera, Cupid!, and that’s saying something because I found all the stories engaging.

At the age of sixteen, Cary Teijan lost the love of his young life. Dylan James disappeared without a word or a backward glance, so when Dylan turns back up in Bluewater Bay, working security on the set of Wolf’s Landing, not to mention returning with the intent to claim Cary—finally and irrevocably—the stage is set for six years of anger and resentment to throw plenty of roadblocks in the way of their journey to reconciliation.

There are secrets that Dylan’s been keeping from Cary which, coupled with the fact he saw nothing of his future but the possibility of following in his own father’s miserable footsteps, is why he enlisted and is what kept him from returning to Bluewater Bay until he’d worked to become the man Cary deserves.

Jakes mixes just the right amount of emotional conflict with sexual tension, unresolved anger, and regret to deliver a great second-chance love story.

Anne Tenino’s Helping Hand wins the award for story most in need of a sequel, and I’m hoping Lucas Wilder and Gabriel Savage are set to have their own novel in the series.

This story has a bit of a different flair to it, as it’s a coming out/coming of age story. Lucas has always been the odd piece in his blue collar family’s puzzle, and he’s just been accepted into the California College of the Arts, but first he has to break the news to his parents. Which he does…right about the same time he also announces to them that he’s gay.

Family tensions run high in this story, but not nearly as high as the sexual tension between Lu and his brother’s friend Gabriel. One moment of passion between the two leaves us with an inkling that Gabriel’s not half the ass he lets Lucas believe he is, and left me wanting more—Lu and Gabe, the post college years.

Tenino wrote this story with humor and heart, but if you’re not a fan of loose ends, well, just be prepared.

Finally, providing the bookend to L.A. Witt’s piece, Z.A. Maxfield treats readers to another taste of the delicious that is Nash Holly, first introduced in his and Spencer Kepler’s novel Hell on Wheels.

I’ll Be There finds the men hundreds of miles apart in the days before Valentine’s Day, with a snowstorm bearing down on the Midwest that threatens to keep them apart on their first February 14th together.

For all you readers who attended GRL2014, be prepared to recognize the setting of the convention Spencer’s attending, and be prepared to smile at the tenacity and ingenuity Nash uses to make sure he makes it to Bloomingdale, Illinois to be with Spencer, come hell or high water. Or feet of snow and treacherous road conditions, as the case may be.

This is the one story in the collection that I’d suggest might be best appreciated by reading Hell on Wheels first—to know these guys is to love them—but as sweet and romantic gestures go, Nash’s is just about the sweetest and romantickest. If not the dangerest.

If you’re looking for a little variety, solid storytelling, and some romance to round it all out, Lights, Camera, Cupid! is instant gratification in five satisfying pieces.

SE Jakes Is “Running Wild” Today, With A Giveaway

Thanks so much to The Novel Approach for hosting me on the tour for Running Wild: Havoc Book 1. This is the start of a brand new series, with different heroes for each book and HEAs at the end of each book. Sean Rush and Ryker stole my heart a long time ago, and I’m excited for you guys to meet all of them.

TNA: What’s your idea of a great protagonist? Do you think you have a “type” when it comes to the characters you write?

SE: I definitely love alphas. Those are the characters who present themselves to me most often, although I’ll have an occasional alpha-lite (Blue and Sean come to mind.) I love military men. And men who do things above the law for good reason, or because they can’t stop themselves (again, Blue and Sean) but the bad things don’t hurt people.

SE Jakes Is “Free Falling” In Today With A Giveaway

Thanks so much for having me here today so I can shout about the fact that Free Falling’s getting a re-release with Riptide! I’m so excited about this, you have no idea. For me, this is the book that started the Hell or High Water series (see below for more on that).

Free Falling originally came out in December of 2012—it was the first book I self-published, and I worked with Sarah Frantz as my editor (and she’s now my Riptide editor as well) and the entire experience was simply awesome.

This would also be the second book Prophet inserted himself into (the first was Bound For Keeps). It was then I realized that the man needed his own series or else he would show up in every single book I wrote. But for Free Falling, it certainly cemented the bond between Blue and Prophet. I’ve brought Blue and Mick back in Long Time Gone (Hell or High Water 2), and yes, I’m totally planning a Free Falling sequel, which would happen sometime post Dirty Love (Dirty Deeds 3). Because I can’t get enough of Blue, my favorite thief, and Mick, the man who’ll chase him every single time.

The great thing about moving this book to Riptide is that now all my EE, Ltd. books are in one place AND Free Falling will now be available everywhere in eFormat AND in print!!! The cover looks gorgeous in person.

Every comment on this blog tour enters you in a drawing to win one of three SIGNED copies of the Hell or High Water series: Catch a Ghost and Long Time Gone. Entries close at midnight, Eastern Time, on March 24th, and winners will be announced on March 25th. Contest is valid worldwide.

About Free Falling:

Sometimes falling in love is the most dangerous thing of all.

Blue is a thief who lives for adrenaline and danger. And when he meets Mick, a mercenary, he’s hit with a buzz of attraction like the rush of a high-rise job without a safety rope. But after making plans to get together, Mick leaves him hanging, and Blue vows never again.

A year later, Mick watches helplessly as Blue stumbles into the middle of one of Mick’s jobs. Risking his cover and their lives, Mick saves Blue and cares for him as he recuperates, but neither man has any idea how to handle the intimacy this forces them into.

Once Blue is safe, Mick redoubles his efforts to take down the drug lord responsible—and disappears. Blue goes after him, determined to return the favor and rescue the man he loves, no matter the cost.

*This is a revised second edition of the originally self-published title. No substantive changes have been made to the story.*

SE Jakes Wants To Get A Little Dirty, Come Hell Or High Water – And There’s A Giveaway!

Hey everyone!!! Thanks to The Novel Approach for having me back here for my Dirty Deeds blog tour :) Dirty Deeds is the first in this spin-off series of Hell or High Water. Dirty Deeds focuses on Cillian and Mal, two characters who’ve been in both Hell or High Water books 1 & 2 (Catch a Ghost and Long Time Gone.) Dirty Deeds # 1 captures a very specific moment in time for Cillian (the spook) and Mal (the former SEAL in exile).

Today, I’ve pulled out three of my most frequently asked questions about Dirty Deeds, book 1.

Some of your books are listed as having ambiguous endings. Why is that / what does it mean/ does that mean it’s not romance?

I write romance. I believe in and want HEAs.* That being said, for the series that follow the same characters throughout all the books (Hell or High Water and Dirty Deeds) the characters aren’t ready to even have an HFN* after their first books. But by the series wrap up, there will be HEAs for everyone!

*(HEA = Happily Ever After / HFN = Happily For Now)

Is Dirty Deeds # 1 a Hell or High Water book or part of the Dirty Deeds series?

Technically, it’s actually both, since it falls under the EE, Ltd category, along with Free Falling & the Hell or High Water series (and Bound For Keeps). I’ll explain: Dirty Deeds #1 is a novella (about 22K). It was supposed to be a Prophet / Tommy short way back when I contracted Prophet’s series, but then my editor was like, ‘what about Mal and Cillian?” So basically, the first DD is a short that runs along the timeline for Hell or High Water # 3. It takes place over 4 days. And then, Dirty Lies and Dirty Love will come out POST Hell or High Water, and they will have their own (non-Prophet) plot. I hope that makes sense? Dirty Deeds # 1 is standalone, but I think if you’ve read Catch A Ghost and Long Time Gone, you’ll get a deeper understanding of the guys. But all my books are connected – my books all take place in one large, overreaching universe.

The ending of Dirty Deeds # 1 almost killed me. How long will we have to wait until Cillian and Mal get some resolution?

Well, you know they’ll get their ultimate HEA at the end of Dirty Love. That being said, you will see Mal and Cillian together a bit in the next two Hell or High Water books, Daylight Again and If I Ever. I’m not ‘that’ cruel.

Dirty Deeds: Dirty Deeds book 1

Two seasoned operatives finally meet their match: each other.

Cillian works for the mysterious Special Branch 20: an organization that runs black ops commissioned by the British government. His specialty is deep undercover assignments with virtually no support. He’s been alone for so long that he no longer knows anything else.

Mal’s also used to being alone. Wanted in several states and even more countries, he’s not allowed in the vicinity of any of his former Navy SEAL teammates. And his current assignment is to track Cillian in order to discover the spook’s endgame. Except he’s no longer sure which one of them is getting played.

Cillian isn’t about to let the mission that’s consumed him for the past several years crumble because an outsider is poking around where he doesn’t belong. But Mal forces his way through Cillian’s defenses—and into his heart—exposing a devastating betrayal that could destroy them both.

A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week, Aleksandr Voinov, Brita Addams, Kingett Reads, Lex Chase, Posy Roberts, Rick R. Reed, Riptide Publishing, Sammy Goode, SE Jakes, Storm Moon Press, T. Strange

Here’s A Sneak Peek At The Coming Week

Welcome to another great week coming up, gang, and speaking of welcome, we’ve added a new reviewer to our staff, who we’re so glad to have coming to play in our sandbox! Unlike Robert’s rather spontaneous addition to our crew, this one’s been in the works for what seems like forever now but has actually been more like weeks. Many of you may already know her from her vast repertoire of work for Jesse Wave and Joyfully Jay, but I hope you’ll take a minute to still say hi.

So, without further ado, let’s welcome Sammy Goode to The Novel Approach!

So, what to say about a woman who leads a lovely, simple, ordinary life…

I used to be a stripper and did pole danc…wait….maybe that’s an overshare?

Let me begin again…

I love dogs, but I have a restraining order out against both of my cats…

ok….this is not going as I planned…hmmmm….third time’s a charm?

Hello, my name Is Sammy Goode. It’s lovely to meet you!

I teach small people who never cease to surprise me, and I write plays for them as well…sometimes the plays garner me a boat load of money, sometimes they languish on my “this is such a flop-no one in their right mind will buy it” pile, but always the writing is the thing I enjoy the most.
I read almost as much as I sleep–lots of genres but M/M is by far my favorite.

I am an empty nester except I’m really happy that the nest is, well, empty. I think that either makes me a bad parent or a well adjusted woman. I’m opting for the latter!

And finally? I am so very happy to be here discussing books with you.

And now, here’s what’s in store for the coming week!

Monday – The lovely and delectable Brita Addams is here today with her regular monthly Guest Article. This week she’s discussing the importance of good editing.

TuesdayRick R. Reed is here to answer some very nosy questions about himself and his latest release Legally Wed, and there’s a Giveaway.

Catch This Ghost From SE Jakes As Soon As You Can

“Don’t matter if you believe in ghosts or not. If they’re there, they’re there.” – Joan Lowery Nixon

Phil Butler runs a mercenary for hire company named Extreme Escapes, LTD. His company assists with rescues when the government needs a helping hand. One of his new rules that he won’t budge on is that all of his operatives need a partner. So what does he do when he has a former CIA spook/former Navy Seal who hates partners and a former FBI man/ deputy sheriff that is scared to have a partner? Ofcourse you put them together right? Well you can imagine the chaos that ensues.

Prophet has done his time as a Navy Seal and then as a CIA spook. Due to some injuries suffered in doing his duty and some health problems he has settled into EE, LTD. He goes through partners like some people go through socks. He prefers to go it alone, but Phil isn’t having it anymore. Told he has no choice Prophet meets his new partner Tom Boudreaux. To his dismay he is attracted to this Tom guy, so he has to push him away as quickly as possible.

Tom Boudreaux was a great FBI agent and then deputy sheriff, except for the fact his partners kept dying. You see Tom has this quirky sixth sense thing going on, but none of his partners believe him. When they don’t listen to him they end up dead, doesn’t make for much on the popularity scale. About a month before he starts work for EE, LTD, he receives an anonymous video of a soldier being interrogated that sets him on his heels. He has never seen someone so feral or so strong. Imagine his surprise when his new partner is the soldier from the video. The worst part, he is attracted to this wild card, he has to get away as quickly as possible.

The two men are on a case that is all about Prophet’s past and he isn’t exactly being forthcoming with facts. Eventually Tom and Prophet end up as lovers and they start sharing some of their pasts with each other. The case is bringing up many of Prophet’s ghosts and he is finding it hard to battle them and the connection he feels with Tom. The easiest relationship he has right now is with his neighbor Cillian, who is also some unknown type of spook, and he only has contact with him through the computer. When the case comes to a head Prophet ends up taking a bullet for Tom which brings their partnership to an end. Prophet succeeds in pushing Tom away for a short time, but when the past comes back with a vengeance, Tom is dragged back into Prophet’s life.

The man responsible for Prophet’s worst nightmares is back and he has Tom. What will Prophet do to save Tom? How in the world is Cillian involved in all this? Tom is tired of being pushed aside so he isn’t sticking around to find out. He does just what Prophet wants and chooses a different partner, and effectively burns the bridge built between him and Prophet.

SE Jakes won my unwavering fandom when she wrote the Men Of Honor series, but I think I may have a new favorite series. If you like flawed men who need each other to heal and can also blow stuff up, then by all means you need to give this a chance. I am marking the calendar for book 2, I just hope time flies!
