Blurb:  As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

Review:  So, a little less than a year ago, I ordered a book from Dreamspinner Press because it was being offered for free. I didn’t really read the blurb or any reviews, I hadn’t heard of the author or the series, but it was free and my budget was tight so I thought, well, I give it a shot.  That book was Hell & High Water, and I fell in love.

Although the first books all revolved mostly around Dex and Sloane, they really showcase the entire team, and this book is Ash and Cael’s story.  We get a little more background on things that have made these two who they are, and I don’t think their story could have been done any better than it was.  Even though there was a change in the MC in this book, it still focuses on the team, so you still get snippets of all of the guys and girls we love. I liked getting a look at the team from a different perspective and to get to see a how Ash and Cael view the crazy going on around them. I seriously want a friend like Dex.

As a couple, Ash and Cael are so sweet. They seem to bring out the best in each other. They make each other see themselves as the other sees them: strong, sweet, fierce, protective and loved.

I have loved every book and audio in this series so far, and absolutely can’t wait for more of the THIRDS.  I can only imagine how awesome Calvin and Hobbs story is going to be!

Dex’s team is pulled from the case, with the investigation handed to Team Leader Sebastian Hobbs. Review: MORE!!! That is all I have to say. These THIRDS books have made me a fangirl. I can’t help myself. I drive down the road listening to these books, and people look at me funny because I am tearing up I am laughing so hard. I have to say that Dex is one of my favorite fictional characters. The whole support crew makes me smile. This series is so well written, and when this book was over, I was sad. I wanted to listen to them all over again, so I, in fact, listened to this audio again as soon as it was done. You can’t ask for more in these books. You get comedy, true love, action sequences, 80s music and hot man sex. SIGN ME UP!

Narration: In my eyes, Mark Westfield can do no wrong. He is freaking brilliant. I read the first few books of this series…but after listening to them on audio, I will never go to the written word again. He takes these characters and brings them to life. He uses sound effects and his own particular style. Although he reads all the characters, I feel that Mark is Dex. Perfection…simply perfection.

Excerpt: “You should have seen him,” Dex said with a laugh. “He looked so adorable with his cheetah fuzz shaped into spikes, from his head down to his back. Like a little spotted punk rocker.”

Maddock shook his head at Dex. “It took me two hours to wash all the hair spray off your brother’s fur.”

“We were pretending to be Guns N’ Roses,” Cael explained. “Dex was singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and I was backup sing—er, chirping.”

Ash laughed and playfully bumped Cael’s shoulder. “I’m going to have to agree with Dex. That’s adorable.” Even in his Therian form, Ash thought Cael was the sweetest thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Cael could be in his Therian form among thousands of cheetahs, and Ash would be able to point him out. His little gestures, the heart shape of his nose, or the way he chirped away, as if anyone not in their Therian form might understand him if he tried hard enough.

Dex grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Tell me you recorded that. Doesn’t matter. I have witnesses.” Dex stood and motioned to all of them. “Witnesses! You all heard it. Ash said he agrees with me.”

“Oh, good Lord. We’re never going to hear the end of this,” Maddock sighed, getting up to clear the dishes.

“Do you realize how epic this moment is?” Dex said, helping clear up.

“It’s not really that epic,” Maddock replied.

Dex let out an exaggerated gasp. “Where have you been living? Ash Keeler has agreed with something I, Dexter J. Daley, has said.”

“About your brother being adorable. Not exactly earthshattering. He’s thought that since they met.”

The table fell into silence as they all gaped at Maddock. Well, this was news to Ash. What the hell? Seeming to notice the quiet, or more likely the lack of Dex talking, Maddock looked up.

“What are you, fish? Close your mouths.”

Blurb: New York City’s streets are more dangerous than ever with the leaderless Order of Adrasteia and the Ikelos Coalition, a newly emerged Therian group, at war. Innocent civilians are caught in the crossfire and although the THIRDS round up more and more members of the Order in the hopes of keeping the volatile group from reorganizing, the members of the Coalition continue to escape and wreak havoc in the name of vigilante justice.

Worse yet, someone inside the THIRDS has been feeding the Coalition information. It’s up to Destructive Delta to draw out the mole and put an end to the war before anyone else gets hurt. But to get the job done, the team will have to work through the aftereffects of the Therian Youth Center bombing. A skirmish with Coalition members leads Agent Dexter J. Daley to a shocking discovery and suddenly it becomes clear that the random violence isn’t so random. There’s more going on than Dex and Sloane originally believed, and their fiery partnership is put to the test. As the case takes an explosive turn, Dex and Sloane are in danger of losing more than their relationship.

Review: All I can say is LOVE LOVE LOVE. If I could give this 10 stars, I would. Every single aspect of this audiobook held my attention and kept me coming back for more.

Charlie Cochet writes the perfect blend of comedy, angst, and action. From Dex’s demented sense of humor involving a coffee mug, to Maddock cutting Sloane’s hair, to the scene where Sloane and Dex’s relationship is revealed to a friend, Charlie keeps you laughing through really serious and scary situations. This team goes through a lot, but humor makes Rack & Ruin feel light. The author gives you closure to the case they are investigating within the book, but definitely keeps you anticipating the next book. Rack & Ruin has a devastating ending, with many open ended questions; however, this doesn’t make me angry or frustrating. Charlie Cochet tied enough of the story together to satisfy me, while the anticipation eats me up.

Narration: Before picking this audiobook for review, I had previously read it and loved it; however, the narrator, Mark Westfield, brought the THIRDS to life. Mark had me riveted; crying, I was laughing so hard, and then other times simply just crying.

Each character has a different voice and tone, and the action sequences were suspenseful and believable. I don’t know how Westfield does it, but he takes me back to the Radio Days of the past, when props and sound effect were used without seeming kitschy or overdone. He gives a master class narration. When I was done listening to this, I was sad because it was over. This audiobook and narrator are without a doubt the best I have listened to. Putting this incredible author and narrator together is a pairing made in heaven.

Review: It is a well known fact that I am highly addicted to Charlie Cochet’s THIRDS Series and all the extremely fabulous characters she has brought into my life. The first three books have centered around Dex Daley and Sloane Brodie, while letting us get to know the rest of the team members and their stories in a peripheral way. Honestly, I thought we had pretty much finished Dex and Sloane’s romance in the last book, but boy was I wrong.

With Brodie in the hospital, Dex makes it his new mission in life to track down the people responsible for putting him there. When Lieutenant Sparks pulls the entire team off the case, Dex has to decide if he wants to go it alone or if he wants to pull in a little help from his friends.

Just like with all the other books in the series, there is plenty of action and humor. The one new thing we get in this book is a glimpse into Dex’s mind we haven’t had before. Things he thought he had put behind him come back to take up space in his head. Thankfully Brodie is there to help Dex, and the two men end up closer than either of them thought they ever could be.

Aside from Dex and Brodie’s romantic entanglements, we also got a glimpse into Cael and Ash’s relationship, or lack thereof. Surprisingly, Calvin and Hobbes make a very memorable appearance as well.

In my opinion, this is the best book in the series so far. We got to see so much more of the serious side of Dex and Sloane both. Neither one of these men are known to share their feelings often, but when they do, WOW, they really do.

I am already starting a countdown to the next book. I may even be doing a tad bit of whining, but don’t tell anyone. I feel Charlie Cochet left Dex and Brodie in a great spot, and I am desperately looking forward to see what is next for Destructive Delta (crossing my fingers for Cael and Ash’s story next, but I can’t imagine I would be disappointed with whatever comes my way). One new character was introduced at the end of the book, and I can’t wait to see what role Old Betsy is going to play for Ash and Brodie.

So, if you haven’t read this series yet, I would tell you to hurry up and get reading. This is one you don’t want to miss.

“YOU’RE GOING to get us fucking killed!”

Dex ignored Ash and hit the gas, speeding after the ambulance heading up route 9A toward NY Presbyterian Hospital, its wailing siren and flashing lights an unyielding reminder of what he stood to lose. The ambulance had left before them, but Dex was in his Challenger with its own THIRDS installed lights flickering and sending out a warning to everyone around him to get the hell out of his way.

When Ash finally released Dex from his iron grip, Dex had stood on the sidewalk in front of his house, amidst the smoke and burning car parts unable to believe what had happened. He’d been at a loss, watching the chaos unfold as emergency teams and THIRDS agents flooded the scene. Orders had been shouted, the area evacuated, blue and black THIRDS tape marking off his personal disaster zone. And then a bright orange beacon parked near the end of the block gave him clarity.

Dex maneuvered through four lanes of traffic, changing gears and working the pedals. No one knew how to drive his baby like he did, and nothing on God’s green earth was going to make him lose that ambulance. Not with Sloane in the back of it fighting for his life.

Sloane….

No matter how hard Dex tried, his head kept replaying the scene like a goddamn looped video: Dex bolting for the front door, not caring what might be on the other side—getting to Sloane had been all that mattered. He has to be okay. Please God, let him be okay. Clouds of thick black smoke. The sidewalk in front of his house looking like a war zone, littered with debris and pieces of twisted car parts. The trees on fire. Dex tackled to the ground, the breath stolen from his lungs. Ash on him keeping him safe. Bullets flying. Sloane under a piece of mangled door. Screeching sirens and uniformed bodies rushing in. Blood everywhere. Sloane unmoving. A jagged piece of metal sticking out of his side. Blood, so much blood.

It should have been me.

“Fuck! Mother fucking asshole son of a bitch!” Dex slammed his hand against the steering wheel before swerving around some bastard going the speed limit. He was losing his shit. It was fast approaching much like the yellow—soon to be red—light ahead of him, yet he was helpless to stop it. The Challenger flew past the red, missing an oncoming taxi by inches.

“Enough!” Ash snapped at him. “You’re gonna get us fucking killed! Keep your shit together and get us to the fucking hospital in one goddamn piece, or I swear to Christ I will fucking knock your ass out and drive us there myself.”

Dex wanted to tell Ash where he could stick his threats, but he didn’t. He heard Ash suck in a sharp breath, and Dex eased his foot off the accelerator just enough to keep the ambulance’s flashing lights in sight a few cars ahead. Ash held on to the passenger door with one hand, his other pressed against his side to ease the pain along with the slow trickle of blood seeping through his torn stitches. Stitches he’d torn saving Dex.

“Sorry,” Dex said through his teeth. They were almost at the hospital, which meant more traffic. “Sorry for being an asshole and for what I’m about to do. Hold on.” He hit the gas pedal again, and the engine thundered as he raced forward. After a couple of close calls, they got to the hospital before the ambulance. He skidded into valet parking, put the Challenger in park, jumped out, and tossed the keys to the valet guy. Ignoring his teammate’s bitching, Dex called out over his shoulder for Ash to take care of it. The ambulance arrived seconds later, and Dex ran up to it, watching with his heart in his throat as the backdoors swung open and the EMTs rushed out. The gurney swiftly emerged with Sloane strapped down on his uninjured side, an oxygen mask covering his nose and mouth, and the jagged metal piece jutting out from the right side of his torso. Removing it without surgery was clearly out of the question.

Dex followed the EMTs as they rushed Sloane through the huge open glass doorway into the hospital, shouting out codes and medical jargon Dex couldn’t make out. One of the EMTs said something about the THIRDS, and a Therian nurse behind the desk snatched up a phone and rambled something off. Within seconds, a handful of Therian doctors and nurses came running, joining the EMTs as they stole Sloane away into a wide, brightly lit corridor. Dex attempted to follow only to have his path blocked by two male Therian nurses.

“He’s my partner,” Dex pleaded, trying to get around them.

“I’m sorry, sir, but you can’t go in there.”

“The hell I can’t. He’s my partner!” Dex grabbed one of the nurses when a pair of beefy arms wrapped around Dex’s waist, lifting him off his feet and away. “Fuck off, Ash! Get off!” He couldn’t leave Sloane in there all alone. Sloane hated hospitals as it was. What if he woke up and freaked out? What if he didn’t know where he was? What if something happened and Dex wasn’t there? He couldn’t lose Sloane now. It wasn’t Sloane’s time. They hadn’t had enough time!

“You’re not the only one who needs him.”

Dex stilled. It wasn’t so much Ash’s words, but the subtle desperation behind them. Ash put him down, and Dex turned, the look on Ash’s dirt-smudged face taking the fight out of Dex. He’d never seen the gruff agent looking so helpless, and despite clearly having his own fears, Ash met his gaze.

“He’s all the family I’ve got. Just let them do their job. It’s the best we can do for him.”

Dex swallowed hard and nodded. He had to get a hold of himself. It was only when Ash winced that Dex remembered the guy was slowly bleeding out. “Shit, Ash. Come on. We need to get you fixed up.”

“I’m fine,” Ash muttered, wiping the sweat from his beaded brow.

“Yeah, you look fine.” Dex refused to give in to his teammate’s stubbornness. He called over a nurse who took one look at Ash and ran off to get assistance. Ash continued to argue when Dex spotted his dad marching their way. Tony stopped beside them, his gaze dropping to Ash’s hand against his bleeding side before he barked out an order.

“Keeler, get your ass in there and get those stitches seen to.”

Ash looked like he wanted to argue but knew better. With a resigned sigh, he headed for the anxious looking nurses. As soon as Ash disappeared, Tony put a hand to Dex’s shoulder, concern in his deep brown eyes. It was too much for Dex right now.

“Hey. I’m going to take a walk. Call me if anything happens.”

Thankfully, his dad knew him well and gave him a nod. He removed his hand from Dex’s shoulder and let him go. Right now, Tony had to be his sergeant. Anything else would break Dex’s tremulous hold on his emotions. He walked off to gather his strength. He was going to need it.

My apologies for the delay. We had a bit of an incident in the canteen this morning. Welcome to the THIRDS. I’m Sloane Brodie, Team Leader for Destructive Delta. I appreciate you taking the time to be here. What’s that? I don’t sound very convincing? I agree. I was told to say that. Let’s get one thing straight, my top priority is the wellbeing of my team. If you were as hounded by the press as we are, called every name under the sun, and had your picture splashed across every paper in New York City, you’d be a little cynical about it too. There’s nothing you can write about me that hasn’t already been written. So on that note, let’s get on with it.

Hello all! Thank you all for joining me on another stop of the Blood & Thunder Blog Tour! I’m so happy to be here at the fabulous Novel Approach to celebrate the release of book two in the THIRDS series. Today I thought I’d talk about secondary characters, seeing as there are quite a few in the THIRDS series.

When I start a series, I never start out with a plan of which secondary characters will end up with their own book or spin-off. It’s something that happens organically. I like to approach it the same way two people would in real life. Watch them meet other characters, see the attraction develop, and next thing I know, they’re falling for someone. I’m both a plotter and a pantser. So although I plot, I also leave room for natural growth. That’s usually where some characters find their voices, some speaking louder than others.

(Thirds Series, Bk #2)
by Charlie Cochet

Blurb:
When a series of bombs go off in a Therian youth center, injuring members of THIRDS Team Destructive Delta, and causing a rift between agents Dexter J. Daley and Sloane Brodie, peace seems unattainable. Especially when a new and frightening group, the Order of Adrasteia, appears to always be a step ahead. With panic and intolerance spreading and streets becoming littered with the Order’s propaganda, hostility between Humans and Therians grows daily. Dex and Sloane, along with the rest of the team, are determined to take down the Order and restore peace, not to mention settle a personal score. But the deeper the team investigates the bombings, the more they believe there’s a more sinister motive than a desire to shed blood and spread chaos.
Discovering the frightful truth behind the Order’s intent forces Sloane to confront secrets from a past he thought he’d left behind for good, a past that could not only destroy him and his career, but also the reputation of the organization that made him all he is today. Now more than ever, Dex and Sloane need each other, and, along with trust, the strength of their bond will mean the difference between justice and all-out war.

Dex arched an eyebrow at the instructor. “Which

“Both.”
“You want me to piss him off?” What kind of
class was this?
“In a matter of speaking. Yes.”
“Great.” Okay. How could he piss off his
partner without losing a limb? What he needed to do was annoy Sloane, really annoy him. Shouldn’t be too
difficult. Dex had annoying down to an art. He thrust a finger in Sloane’s
face, knowing how much his Felid partner hated that. Then he started singing.  Nothing annoyed his partner like Hall and
Oates.
Sloane let out a fierce roar, and Dex started
dancing around him, his voice going high-pitched for certain lyrics while he
snapped his fingers. Sloane pawed at him, and Dex spun on his heels, avoiding
getting smacked. His partner hissed, baring his fangs before he took off after
Dex.
“Shit!” Dex bolted, weaving through the rows of

“Understand your partner’s behavior. Why is he

“Because I pissed him off?” Dex called out over

“Very good. Thank you, Agent Daley. You may now

Clearly, Dr. Eldridge didn’t personally know
Sloane Brodie. Dex put his hands up, walking backward slowly as he spoke to his
partner.
“Hey, buddy. Just following orders, you know?
You heard him. I wasn’t the one who
wanted to piss you off.” Dex crouched down and held a hand out. Please don’t bite me. Please don’t bite me.
Sloane blinked before jumping up on his two back paws, his front paws pushing
against Dex’s shoulders and knocking him onto his back. Sloane pinned him, and
Dex braced himself. When Sloane started licking his face, Dex shut his eyes
tight. “Okay, I get it. Payback. Take notes people.” Dex pointed at his partner.
“This is what I meant about payback.”
“Agent Brodie, if you’ll resume your place

Sloane did as asked, and Dex wiped at his face
with his sleeve before returning to his spot. He was never more grateful not to
have ended up partnered with Ash than he was at this moment.
“Once you have assessed your partner and
deduced he or she is irate, you will want to give your partner space. If you
feel it’s safe to approach, you will do so with caution. Deal with what’s
causing the issue. For example, Agent Fuller, please approach Agent Daley.
Slowly.”
The moment Agent Fuller got to his feet,
Sloane’s ears twitched. “Um, I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” Dex said,
watching Agent Fuller creep toward Dex, as if Sloane hadn’t noticed. The Human
rookie was clearly unaccustomed to dealing with Felids. “My partner’s a little
on the grumpy side and poking the sleeping jaguar with a pointy stick might not
end so well.”
Agent Fuller paused, his panicked gaze going to
their instructor.
“It’s all right, Agent Fuller. Proceed.”
Doing as instructed, Agent Fuller resumed his
prowl, while Sloane resumed his grooming of Dex, his heavy tail thumping
against the floor. Uh-oh.
“As you can see by Agent Brodie’s movements,
he’s fully aware of Agent Fuller. His tail is telling Agent Fuller to be
cautious, Agent Daley is his, and he will not take kindly to any aggression
toward his partner.”
Dex held up a finger. “Can I just—”
“Please stand, Agent Daley.”
Dex did as asked, and Sloane released a huff at
having his grooming session interrupted. This was going to end badly. Dr.
Eldridge had no idea what he was about to unleash. Sloane Brodie chewed rookies
for breakfast and spit them out. Dex should know.
“Agent Fuller, please advance with the
intention of striking Agent Daley.”
Dex didn’t bother taking a stance or prepare
for a blow that would never land. His fellow rookies looked at him as if he was
crazy, but soon they’d understand. Poor Agent Fuller. The guy pulled back a fist
and the moment he took a step, Sloane’s roar echoed across the field. Ears
flattened, fangs bare, Sloane leapt toward Agent Fuller who screamed like a
preteen at a Bieber concert and made tracks across the field, Sloane on his
heels looking mighty pissed.
“Thank you, Agent Brodie,” the instructor
called out.
Agent Brodie wiped his ass with their
instructor’s polite orders and chased Agent Fuller down the length of the
grassy pitch. Dex glanced around. “So which of you is a medic?”
A few shaky hands went up.
“Great. Get ready for the next lesson. How to
patch up a Human scratching post.”
